The Ties That Bind: Friendship Development In An Information Technology Work Environment, Courtney E. Fristoe Dec 2000

The Ties That Bind: Friendship Development In An Information Technology Work Environment, Courtney E. Fristoe

Student Work

Examination of workplace friendship development is currently an important emerging research area. This study investigated the factors and communication changes that impacted workplace friendship development in an information technology organization. Additionally, the level to which relationship partners agreed about the factors and communication changes their relationship had experienced was also examined. Findings suggested proximity, shared tasks, perceived similarity, and increased openness were important in early friendship development. Further sharingof personal information, such as life experiences and spending time together outside of work, brought friends even closer. Increased closeness over time lead relationship partners to be considered almost best friends. The …

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander Dec 2000

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper focuses on a radical change, in which organizations abandon an institutionalized template for arranging their core activities, that is likely to occur in organizational fields that have strong, local market forces and strong but heterogeneous institutional forces. We examine the role of market forces and heterogeneous institutional elements in promoting divergent change in core activities among all U.S. rural hospitals from 1984 to 1991. Results support the view that divergent change depends on both market forces (proximity to competitors, disadvantages in service mix) and institutional forces (state regulation, ownership and governance norms, and mimicry of models of divergent …

A Report On An Arts Administration Internship With The Philadelphia Museum Of Art, Summer 2000, R. Sofya Belair

Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)

A one-semester internship with an arts organization is required of all graduate students to complete their degree in Arts Administration from the University of New Orleans. The student must then submit a detailed internship report to his/her Graduate Committee in order to be approved for graduation. This student has an interest in visual arts, with the goal of a career in the museum field. Seeking to gain further museum experience, I pursued and was accepted into a summer 2000 internship program at one of our nation's finest art museums. Differences In Groupings Of Students' Academic Achievement, Attendance And Attitude As They Move From A Traditional To A Modified 4 X 4 Block Schedule, Charles Theodore Keenan Dec 2000

Differences In Groupings Of Students' Academic Achievement, Attendance And Attitude As They Move From A Traditional To A Modified 4 X 4 Block Schedule, Charles Theodore Keenan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this investigation is to identify the differences in groups of high school students' achievement, attendance, and attitude as they move from a traditional schedule to a modified 4 x 4 block schedule. The population for this study consisted of all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students at a high school during the 1998--1999 school year. There were four samples taken from this population, the first, second, third, and fourth quartiles of students. A survey questionnaire was used to determine student attitude. This survey was distributed to all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students at the high school …

Gis Enhancements Using Gps Technology, Marc R. Beckel Nov 2000

Gis Enhancements Using Gps Technology, Marc R. Beckel

Dissertations and Theses

Global Positioning System (GPS) technology is a viable tool for the collection and creation of Geographic Information System (GIS) databases. Organizations have turned their attention to using this tool to develop new databases for their existing GIS. The integration of these new GPS derived databases with older existing databases leads to both technical and organizational repercussions. With the integration of GPS derived data, an organization's existing GIS requires enhancements to GIS databases and the organization must be prepared to manage the integration.

This thesis examines the technical issues that occur due to integration and conflation of GPS data in an …

A Descriptive Study Of School-Based Intervention Teams In New York State, Sean Croft Nov 2000

A Descriptive Study Of School-Based Intervention Teams In New York State, Sean Croft

Theses

This study examined the current practices of school-based intervention teams (SBIT) in New York State. SBIT are designed to provide immediate assistance to students and teachers, to enhance the ability of teachers to serve difficult-to-teach students within regular education classrooms, and to reduce the number of inappropriate referrals to special education. A mail questionnaire (N=T74; return rate=43%) found that a majority of teams meet once a week, during school hours, and consist of about nine members. SBIT members favor teacher intuition and classroom performance over data-based progress monitoring in deterrnining the effectiveness of interventions. The lack of personnel to perform …

Organizing For National Security, Douglas Stuart Dr. Nov 2000

Organizing For National Security, Douglas Stuart Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Over the last decade the United States has been confronted with not just the collapse of the Soviet empire but also with revolutionary scientific breakthroughs, the transformation of the global economy, and the erosion of many of the basic premises of the Westphalian system of international order. The U.S. policy community has attempted to make sense of these and other changes by recourse to bodies such as the National Defense Panel and the U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century (USNCS/21). The USNCS/21 is currently in the third phase of its mandated activities. At the end of phase three, the members …

Toward A Theory Of Technological Change, John Rodney Franklin Nov 2000

Toward A Theory Of Technological Change, John Rodney Franklin

Student Scholarship

Theories of technological change are generally constructed based on assumptions that the technological artifact is a member of a historical line of technological advance (trajectory and evolutionary theories) or that novel technological developments simply "happen" (happenstance theories). Where a more constructivist view is taken technological change is assumed to be a social construct driven by the societal elements of human relationships and initiative. This paper takes a different approach to technological change positing that a combination of social structure and human agency act in a recursive manner to push a technological artifact forward. Using Anthony Giddens' structuration theory as the …

The Consequences Of Forced Ceo Succession For Outside Directors, Kathleen A. Farrell, David Whidbee Oct 2000

The Consequences Of Forced Ceo Succession For Outside Directors, Kathleen A. Farrell, David Whidbee

College of Business: Faculty Publications

We find an increased likelihood of outside director turnover following forced CEO succession, especially among those directors that are closely aligned with the outgoing CEO, own little equity, and make poor replacement decisions. Directors that remain on the board, however, are more likely to acquire new directorships than those that remain on the board of a matched-sample firm. Overall, the results suggest that outside directors who are not aligned with the CEO and own relatively large equity stakes are rewarded when they remove a poorly performing CEO and replace him or her with a CEO that improves firm performance.
