Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa Umbellus) Foraging In Aspen Stands During Winter In Northern Utah, David G. Hewitt, Terry A. Messmer May 2000

Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa Umbellus) Foraging In Aspen Stands During Winter In Northern Utah, David G. Hewitt, Terry A. Messmer

Western North American Naturalist

Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) population densities are lower in the Intermountain West than elsewhere in the species' range. Throughout much of its range, the Ruffed Grouse is closely associated with quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), in part because aspen buds are an important winter food. Because population fluctuations of Ruffed Grouse have been associated with changes in aspen abundance or chemical composition, we studied winter foraging of the species in the Intermountain West where it has received little attention. Aspen buds were the most prominent forage in the bird's diet, although in contrast to other Ruffed Grouse …

Managing Livestock Grazing For Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus) On Winter Range In The Great Basin, Dennis D. Austin May 2000

Managing Livestock Grazing For Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus) On Winter Range In The Great Basin, Dennis D. Austin

Western North American Naturalist

History and technical literature describing potential effects of livestock grazing on mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) populations and winter range habitat are reviewed. Recommendations for livestock grazing on winter ranges within the Great Basin are advanced.

Effect Of Salinity And Planting Density On Physiological Responses Of Allenrolfea Occidentalis, Bilquees Gul, Darrell J. Weber, M. Ajmal Khan May 2000

Effect Of Salinity And Planting Density On Physiological Responses Of Allenrolfea Occidentalis, Bilquees Gul, Darrell J. Weber, M. Ajmal Khan

Western North American Naturalist

Physiological responses of Allenrolfea occidentalis to salinity and seedling density were investigated. Effects of salinity (0, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 mM NaCl) and 3 planting densities (2000, 4000, 6000 plants m-2) on the growth, survival, and ecophysiology of A. occidentalis, a stem succulent inland halophyte, were studied under controlled greenhouse conditions. Plants were grown in a sand culture using subirrigation. Dry mass of roots was highest at 600 mM NaCl at low density (2000 plants m-2), but declined as salinity increased. Tissue water content was highest at the 200 mM NaCl treatment and …

A Historical Comparison Of Treatment Between Male And Female Sex Offenders In The Correctional System, Weida Y. Allen May 2000

A Historical Comparison Of Treatment Between Male And Female Sex Offenders In The Correctional System, Weida Y. Allen

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of the historical research study is to explore the correctional system's rehabilitation and treatment perspective for both male and female sex offenders. Treatment has been deemed essential for all offenders; while it might not mean a cure, it does give offenders some tools to prevent further offenses.

Literature emphasizes the importance of treatment and rehabilitation for the sex offender. Historically, the female offender has been ignored in the area of treatment and rehabilitation. Sexual offenses are generally perceived as a male phenomenon.

This tidy will give an in-depth view of treatment process and the research on the effectiveness …

Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz May 2000

Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

Puccinellia arctica is a species of arctic grass that is unpalatable to Canada geese, Branta canadensis, and may be an effective and non-lethal means of controlling the growing populations of urban Canada geese that are problematic in many areas of North America. The secondary metabolite profile of P. arctica was compared to the metabolite profiles of three palatable grass species to determine the plausibility that P. arctica is chemically defended. The volatile and non-volatile secondary metabolite profiles of both P. arctica and the palatable grasses were the same. No alkoloids were detected in any of the grasses. Condensed tannin levels …
