Before It's Too Late: Neuropsychological Consequences Of Child Neglect And Their Implications For Law And Social Policy, Janet Weinstein, Ricardo Weinstein Jun 2000

Before It's Too Late: Neuropsychological Consequences Of Child Neglect And Their Implications For Law And Social Policy, Janet Weinstein, Ricardo Weinstein

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Recent developments in the neurosciences have led to dramatic breakthroughs in the area of brain development and the understanding of consequences of neglect. Because this process was heretofore not understood, legislators have been wary of drafting child protection statutes that afforded the possibility for arbitrary interference with families. Strict statutory standards have been adopted that allow coercive intervention only in cases where the child is at substantial risk of imminent physical harm, or after some of the most severe consequences of neglect have been identified. These laws do not consider developmental harm because it does not present an imminent danger …

Association Between Body Size And Mortality In Later Life, Christine L. Himes Jun 2000

Association Between Body Size And Mortality In Later Life, Christine L. Himes

Center for Policy Research

The rising prevalence of obesity in the United States has focused attention on the health consequences of excess weight. Obesity is linked to many of the major causes of death in the United States, including heart disease, some types of cancer, strokes, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. However, the effects of body size on mortality and health among the elderly are much less clear. This paper extends our current understanding of the relationship between body size and mortality by using two nationally representative, longitudinal datasets of individuals at older ages. These analyses indicate that obesity may not contribute greatly to increased mortality …

Effects Of Pycnogenol On Microsomal Cytochrome P450 Activity And Apoptosis, Huong Thu Huynh Jun 2000

Effects Of Pycnogenol On Microsomal Cytochrome P450 Activity And Apoptosis, Huong Thu Huynh

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Phytochemicals are naturally-occurring compounds found in plants, many of which are consumed as nutritional supplements by humans. Pycnogenol is a mixture of flavonoid compounds extracted from bark of pine trees (Pinus maritima) and is commercially available in several different pharmaceutical preparations as a free radical scavenger.

Since few scientific studies have documented the pharmacologic effects of pycnogenol, our objective was to characterize the biological activity of pycnogenol. One study looked at the effects of pycnogenol on the three pathways of NNK metabolism: NNK reduction, N-oxidation and a-hydroxylation. NNK is a lung carcinogen. Lung and liver microsomes from 6 mo and …

Orthognathic Surgery In The Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritic Patient, David H. Gilbert Jun 2000

Orthognathic Surgery In The Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritic Patient, David H. Gilbert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis attempts to use a retrospective evidenced base review of a series of five patients afflicted with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and its inherent dento-facial deformity as a basis for establishing a proposal for a surgical protocol.

A review of pertinent and current literature is performed in describing the disease process as it relates to epidemiology, histopathophysiology, immunology, and clinical presentation. General treatment options are reviewed for the acutely and chronically afflicted patients as well as specific approaches to dento-facial reconstruction.

The studies reviews a series of five female patients who were evaluated and treated by the same surgeon at …

The Culture Of Using Animals In Literature And The Case Of José Emilio Pacheco, Randy Malamud Jun 2000

The Culture Of Using Animals In Literature And The Case Of José Emilio Pacheco, Randy Malamud

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "The Culture of Using Animals in Literature and the Case of José Emilio Pacheco," Randy Malamud argues that the animal poetry of Mexican writer José Emilio Pacheco, compiled in his 1985 collection Album de zoología (trans. 1993 by Margaret Sayers Peden as An Ark for the Next Millennium) embodies a vast literary account of a range of animals. This book represents one of the most extensive treatments of animals by any modern poet, and one of the most sensitive and ambitious attempts to craft a discourse that facilitates an approach to animals on their own terms -- …

Correlation Between The Number Of Children A Woman Has In The Women, Infants, And Children Program And Their Ratings Of The Program, Elizabeth Trevino

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This paper tests the proposition that W.I.C. is satisfactorily meeting the educational, prenatal care and management needs of the W.I.C. clientele. Specifically, the difference of satisfaction between women who have all their children in the program and women who do not have all their children in the program will be determined. The women with more than one child in the program may have more experience with the program and as a result, rate it higher. From a political perspective, the findings of this study are important to the government and taxpayers that are concerned with how well W.I.C. actually serves …

Fermentation Of Fructooligosaccharides By Lactic Acid Bacteria And Bifidobacteria, Handan Kaplan, Robert W. Hutkins

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria were screened of their ability to ferment fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on MRS agar. Of 28 strains of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria examined, 12 of 16 Lactobacillus strains and 7 of 8 Bifidobacterium strains fermented FOS. Only strains that gave a positive reaction by the agar method reached high cell densities in broth containing FOS.

Effects Of Elevated Carbon Dioxide And Nitrogen Fixation On A Legume-Based System: A Test With Soybean And The Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens, Angela M. Spickard Jun 2000

Effects Of Elevated Carbon Dioxide And Nitrogen Fixation On A Legume-Based System: A Test With Soybean And The Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens, Angela M. Spickard

Masters Theses

Wild-type and non-nodulated soybean were grown at 367 ± 10 ppm [ambient] and 756 ± 10 ppm [elevated] CO2 to determine whether nitrogen fixation could minimize the effects of elevated CO2 on plant nutritional and defensive chemistry. Relative to non-nodulated soybean, wild-type soybean had higher concentrations of leaf nitrogen and proteinase inhibitors, as well as lower C:N ratios and lower phenolics. Elevated CO2 resulted in decreased leaf nitrogen and proteinase inhibitor contents, and increased C:N ratios and phenolics in both soybean strains. Constitutive levels of phenolics and proteinase inhibitors occurred as predicted by the Carbon/Nutrient Balance hypothesis …

Comparison Of A Dietary Record Using Reported Portion Size Versus Standard Portion Size For Assessing Nutrient Intake, Desiree C. Welten, Ruth A. Carpenter, R. Sue Mcpherson, Suzanne Brodney, Deirdre Douglass, James B. Kampert, Steven N. Blair Jun 2000

Comparison Of A Dietary Record Using Reported Portion Size Versus Standard Portion Size For Assessing Nutrient Intake, Desiree C. Welten, Ruth A. Carpenter, R. Sue Mcpherson, Suzanne Brodney, Deirdre Douglass, James B. Kampert, Steven N. Blair

Faculty Publications

Objective: Because the percentage of missing portion sizes was large in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (ACLS), careful consideration of the accuracy of standard portion sizes was necessary. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the consequences of using standard portion size instead of reported portion sizes on subjects' nutrient intake.

Methods: In 2307 men and 411 women, nutrient intake calculated from a 3-day dietary record using reported portion sizes was compared with nutrient intake calculated from the same record in which standard portion sizes were substituted for reported portion sizes.

Results: The standard portion sizes provided significantly …

Serum Ferritin Concentration And Recurrence Of Colorectal Adenoma, Marilyn Tseng, E. Robert Greenberg, Robert S. Sandler, John A. Baron, Robert W. Haile, Baruch S. Blumberg, Katherine A. Mcglynn Jun 2000

Serum Ferritin Concentration And Recurrence Of Colorectal Adenoma, Marilyn Tseng, E. Robert Greenberg, Robert S. Sandler, John A. Baron, Robert W. Haile, Baruch S. Blumberg, Katherine A. Mcglynn

Kinesiology and Public Health

Abstract Both body iron stores and dietary iron intake have been reported to increase risk of colorectal neoplasms. We assessed whether serum ferritin concentration was associated with recurrence of colorectal adenomas among 733 individuals with baseline determinations of ferritin as part of a multicenter clinical trial of antioxidant supplements for adenoma prevention. All study participants had at least one adenoma removed within 3 months before enrollment, and 269 of them developed one or more adenomas between follow-up colonoscopies conducted 1 and 4 years after enrollment. Baseline serum ferritin concentrations were analyzed both as a log-transformed continuous variable and as a …

Nutritional Aspects Of Trans Unsaturated Fatty Acids, Mary Cantwell Jun 2000

Nutritional Aspects Of Trans Unsaturated Fatty Acids, Mary Cantwell

Doctoral

Dietary trans unsaturated fatty acids from hydrogenated vegetable and fish oils have been shown to raise plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol and lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels at 10%, 6% and 3% of energy intake. As trans fatty acid intake has not been previously assessed in Ireland a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was developed to assess fat intake with particular focus on trans fatty acids. A nutrient database was developed which included the fatty acid and total trans fatty acid composition of foods (measured by gas chromatography and infra-red spectroscopy) which are sources of fat in the Irish diet. …
