Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough
Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough
Biology Faculty Research
Science and technology are frequently confused. This essay points out the bases for this confusion and then focuses on a basic distinction, namely, that whereas science brings us information that we have little choice but to absorb and reflect upon, technology is something that humans elect to do and, hence, can also elect not to do. It is proposed that technological ethics are most cogently undertaken with scientific understanding as the linchpin and religious/artistic sensibilities as the muse.
Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Antarctic Krill Euphausia Superba, Eileen E. Hofmann, Cathy M. Lascara
Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Antarctic Krill Euphausia Superba, Eileen E. Hofmann, Cathy M. Lascara
CCPO Publications
A time-dependent, size-structured, bioenergetically based model was developed to examine the growth dynamics of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba 2 to 60 mm in size. The metabolic processes included in the model are ingestion, a baseline respiration, respiratory losses due to feeding and digestion, and an activity-based respiration factor. The total of these processes, net production, was used as the basis for determining the growth or shrinkage of individuals. Size-dependent parameterizations for the metabolic processes were constructed from field and laboratory measurements. Environmental effects were included through time series of pelagic phytoplankton concentration that were derived from data sets collected west …
An Object-Oriented Approach To The Modeling And Visualization Of Breast Cancer Tumors, Bruce C. Jenkins
An Object-Oriented Approach To The Modeling And Visualization Of Breast Cancer Tumors, Bruce C. Jenkins
Theses and Dissertations
Great strides have been made in controlling the progression of breast cancer, but medical professionals continue to rely primarily upon traditional mammography for early detection. Enhancing breast cancer detection capabilities - and thus reducing tumor detection time - should result in a reduction in mortality rates. The detection capabilities of mammography may be enhanced through improved modeling and visualization techniques. This thesis is an extension of initial research conducted at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Previous efforts focused on developing a mathematical model for simulating the growth of cancer within unconstrained 3-dimensional space. The research also explored the behavior …
In Vitro And In Vivo Studies On Bone Formation, Charmaine Richman
In Vitro And In Vivo Studies On Bone Formation, Charmaine Richman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The research focus of this dissertation deals with two major issues relevant to osteoporosis, the most common metabolic bone disease. These two aspects are: 1) mechanisms that are involved in the regulation of peak bone density, and 2) evaluation of the in vivo effects of Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-5 (IGFBP-5) as a potential means to treat osteoporosis.
The first study compared two strains of inbred mice, one with high bone density and one with low bone density, to determine when and to what extent bone density accumulation during postnatal and pubertal growth contributed to the observed differences in bone …

Recent reports cite estimates of more than two million children in the United States who are currently living in kinship care arrangements; 10% or approximately 200,000 of these relationships are children in foster care. Much kinship care is done by midlife and older persons who are finding themselves assuming new responsibilities associated with parenting their grandchildren, typically for a period of two years or more. This is a social phenomenon that cuts across all socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic groups. There are many challenges facing these nontraditional families including healthcare, income security, education, social support, and housing. Public and private partnerships …

Opening The Doors Of Communication And Guiding Parents Into Classrooms And Schools, Katy Anne Forsyth
Opening The Doors Of Communication And Guiding Parents Into Classrooms And Schools, Katy Anne Forsyth
Honors Theses
"A good parent is a national treasure and we need to make parents and families partners with their children's teacher and principals in the process of education," (Beyond the Classroom 308). This quote is the heart behind the contents of this book. For the love and concern that we as teachers have for the children in our lives, we owe it to them to help make their educational experience the most well rounded prosperous experience possible. To accomplish this, a partnership needs to be created by opening the doors of communication and guiding parents into classrooms and schools. As teachers, …

The Relationship Of Acculturation And Social Support To Birth Outcomes Of Pregnant Mexican-American Adolescents, Enriqueta Garcia, Martha Ruth Ramirez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The adolescent pregnancy rate in the U.S. continues to be an issue that concerns nursing and allied health related fields. There has been minimal research published regarding Mexican-American adolescent pregnancy outcomes. The purpose of this was to assess the relationship between social support and acculturation on pregnancy outcomes of Mexican- American adolescents.
Statistical descriptive analysis analyzed the relationships between the demographic data, the Acculturation Rating Scale-II for Mexican-Americans, the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire, and birth outcomes. Pearson's product moment correlation analyzed the relationship between acculturation and social support on birth outcomes. Several positive correlations were found at the p ≤ …
Cardio-Respiratory Responses To Moderately Heavy Aerobic Exercise During The Ramadan Fasts, Jasem M. Ramadan, Mario Barac-Nieto
Cardio-Respiratory Responses To Moderately Heavy Aerobic Exercise During The Ramadan Fasts, Jasem M. Ramadan, Mario Barac-Nieto
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to quantify the magnitude of the cardiovascular and respiratory changes that occur during the month of Ramadan in response to moderately heavy aerobic physical exertion. METHODS: Eighteen sedentary Kuwaiti adult males were tested under thermo-neutral conditions during a spring-like month of Ramadan and one month thereafter. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in maximal exercise capacity, treadmill walking efficiency, percentage VO2 max, in body weight and composition associated with Ramadan fasting or one month after. Cardiac (heart rate) and ventilatory responses to moderately intense bouts of sub-maximal aerobic exercise (70% of VO2 max) …

Arthrogryposis, Renal Dysfunction And Cholestasis Syndrome, Mohamed A. Abdullah, Zuhair Al-Hasnan, Emi Okamoto, Abdullah M. Abomelha
Saudi Medical Journal
We report for the first time from the Arabian Gulf area 3 patients with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, cholestasis and renal tubular dysfunction from a Saudi family with 2 other siblings and 3 cousins who possibly died with a similar clinical picture. We also document for the second time in literature other findings in this syndrome including cerebral abnormalities (hypoplastic corpus callosum), congenital heart disease and nerve deafness. We suggest that some of these cases might benefit from ursodeoxycholic acid therapy. We believe that this autosomal recessive disorder is possibly under-diagnosed in this region with a high consanguineous marriage rate.

Serum Lipid Response To N-3 Fatty Acid Enriched Eggs In Persons With Hypercholesterolemia, Nancy M. Lewis, Kim Schalch, Sheila E. Scheideler
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Consumption of long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) is low among certain population subgroups in the United States, especially in people living in Midwestern states and those who dislike fish. Therefore, there is a need to identify acceptable food sources of n-3 PUFA. Vegetable oils, such as canola and soy, provide some n-3 fatty acids. However, these sources are high in n-6 fatty acids and there is concern that they may have detrimental side effects. Eggs enriched in n-3 PUFA can be produced by incorporating sources of these fatty acids into poultry rations. In acceptability studies, US consumers responded …
Weight Discrimination: A Multidisciplinary Analysis, Cheryl Maranto, Ann Fraedrich Stenoien
Weight Discrimination: A Multidisciplinary Analysis, Cheryl Maranto, Ann Fraedrich Stenoien
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Protection against obesity discrimination is extremely limited under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). No obese plaintiff has won using the actual disability theory, but a few have won under the perceived disability theory. Weight-related appearance standards are legal. We estimate weight-based wage penalties for young men and women. We find that mildly obese (20% over standard weight) white women experience greater wage penalties than black men experience for weight that is 100% over standard weight. Men do not experience wage penalties until their weight exceeds standard weight by over 100 lb. A gender-plus analysis under Title VII is more …

Who Cares About Racial Inequality?, Glenn C. Loury
Who Cares About Racial Inequality?, Glenn C. Loury
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The issue of Affirmative Action is discussed, identifying some difficulties with the way that this policy has been pursued in the past: Racial preferences can be a poorly targeted method of closing the gap in social status between Blacks and Whites, and can have negative unintended consequences for incentives and for the reputations of its beneficiaries. Nevertheless, it is argued that some form of affirmative action continues to be needed. The concept of "developmental affirmative action" is introduced. This form of racially targeted policy focuses primarily on the enhancement of competitive skills. In so doing, it avoids many of the …
