Sex & Surveillance: Gender, Privacy & The Sexualization Of Power In Prison, Teresa A. Miller Jan 2000

Sex & Surveillance: Gender, Privacy & The Sexualization Of Power In Prison, Teresa A. Miller

Journal Articles

In prison, surveillance is power and power is sexualized. Sex and surveillance, therefore, are profoundly linked. Whereas numerous penal scholars from Bentham to Foucault have theorized the force inherent in the visual monitoring of prisoners, the sexualization of power and the relationship between sex and surveillance is more academically obscure. This article criticizes the failure of federal courts to consider the strong and complex relationship between sex and surveillance in analyzing the constitutionality of prison searches, specifically, cross-gender searches.

The analysis proceeds in four parts. Part One introduces the issues posed by sex and surveillance. Part Two describes the sexually …

Nutritional Therapies For Ulcerative Colitis: Literature Review, Chart Review Study, And Future Research, Joel S. Edman, William (Bill) H. Williams, Robert C. Atkins Jan 2000

Nutritional Therapies For Ulcerative Colitis: Literature Review, Chart Review Study, And Future Research, Joel S. Edman, William (Bill) H. Williams, Robert C. Atkins

Publications and Research

Few clinical studies suggest a significant influence of diet or nutritional supplementation on ulcerative colitis. One reason is that ulcerative colitis, like many chronic diseases, is multifactorial. This article reviews the relevant literature and presents the results of a retrospective chart review study that was done at a complimentary medicine office.

Evaluation Of Environmental, Health And Safety Management At Small Colleges, Ann Rippe

Theses

Environmental, health and safety management approaches and practices at small colleges are investigated. Awareness of environmental, health and safety initiatives among colleges is also investigated. Surveys were distributed to twelve colleges that accepted an invitation to participate in this study. The colleges were divided into two groups: an experimental group that consisted of small colleges that had made an envirpnmental claim or commitment and a control group that consisted of small colleges that were not known to have made such a claim or commitment. The results did not reveal a significant difference between the experimental and control group colleges that …

Comparative Analysis Of Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate Data: Mocon Vs. Usp, Anthony Maiola Jan 2000

Comparative Analysis Of Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate Data: Mocon Vs. Usp, Anthony Maiola

Theses

The primary objective of this study was to directly compare two distinctly diverse package moisture permeation test methods. The two methods that were compared were the USP <671> Containers Permeation: Single Unit Container and Unit Dose Containers for Capsules and Tablets and the MOCON Modulated Infrared Sensor Method (ASTM F 1249). The tests generate a value known as an MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) value. The focus of this study was to determine whether there is a significant statistical difference between results of the two methods, specifically for unit dose blister packaging. Since MVTR is a package integrity characteristic, it is …

Sustainability And The Next Industrial Revolution: A Revolutionary Approach, Sarah Nesbitt-Rutkowski Jan 2000

Sustainability And The Next Industrial Revolution: A Revolutionary Approach, Sarah Nesbitt-Rutkowski

Theses

The concept of the Next Industrial Revolution is relatively new. Information regarding this topic is not mainstream. There is little literature on how design, and the scientific principles, outlined in the Natural Step, are interconnected within the concept of the Next Industrial Revolution. In this thesis, I explore the big picture of where companies are today regarding sustainability issues, and how some companies are taking the lead in participating in this revolutionary new idea of the Next Industrial Revolution. How are these companies different? What are the similarities? Why and when do some companies choose to take revolutionary approaches, while …

A Literature-Based Thematic Unit For A Multi-Age Classroom : Friendship, Leslie Baxter Jan 2000

A Literature-Based Thematic Unit For A Multi-Age Classroom : Friendship, Leslie Baxter

Graduate Research Papers

A literature-based thematic unit, friendship, has been developed for a multi-age classroom (grades three and four). This thematic unit can contribute to a major goal of a multi-age classroom: to provide students with a learning community in which they can find meaningful learning experiences, thus strengthening their personal-social and thinking-language abilities. The strands for the unit not only included friendship among peers, but also they extended the horizons of friendship to young children through mentoring, to peers at a distance through pen pals, and to the elderly through visitations to a retirement home.

In developing a print-rich learning environment for …

The Effects Of Computers And The Internet On Small Town America, Judith L. Clefisch Jan 2000

The Effects Of Computers And The Internet On Small Town America, Judith L. Clefisch

Graduate Research Papers

Computers and the Internet have changed the way small town America operates. The infusion of technology has allowed rural areas to be competitive with residents in urban areas in education, business, and personal fulfillment. Computerized systems have made the workplace more efficient and effective. The Internet connects rural areas to the rest of the country, even the world. Just because a small town atmosphere appears to be in a different era with its quiet streets and friendly people, this does not necessarily indicate that the small town has not kept up with the technology era. A small town can have …

Factors That Generate Effective Teams, Alberto V. Lenz Cesar Jan 2000

Factors That Generate Effective Teams, Alberto V. Lenz Cesar

Theses

The journey to prosper competitively in the millennium will demand teamwork. The use of a team-based structure in organizations is no longer just a surplus tool to enhance service quality in the operation. In today's developed economies, the use of effective teams has proven to be essential for helping businesses to have continued prosperity and success on a long-term basis. Further, building teams has shown means for organizations to differentiate from competition, once copying human capabilities is not easy as copying technologies advancements. Therefore, in an environment of constant change, organizations must have perseverance and courage to stay on course …

Cellular Release Of And Response To Atp As Key Determinants Of The Set-Point Of Signal Transduction Pathways, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Caroline Gregorian, Paul A. Insel Jan 2000

Cellular Release Of And Response To Atp As Key Determinants Of The Set-Point Of Signal Transduction Pathways, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Caroline Gregorian, Paul A. Insel

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The determinants of “basal” activity of signaling pathways regulating cellular responses are poorly defined. One possibility is that cells release factors to establish the set-point of such pathways. Here we show that treatment of Madin-Darby canine kidney cells with the nucleotidase apyrase decreases basal arachidonic acid release and cAMP production 30–40% and that inhibitors of P2Y receptor action also affect basal and forskolin-stimulated cAMP accumulation. Changing medium prominently increases extracellular levels of ATP in Madin-Darby canine kidney, COS-7, and HEK-293 cells. Mechanical stimulation of ATP release likely occurs in virtually every experimental protocol with cultured cells, implicating such release and …

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella Jan 2000

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella

Psychology Faculty Publications

Fifty students were randomly assigned to take a perception class either in a traditional lecture or in a distance-learning format in which the students attended class only to take tests. The results failed to suggest that the students in the distance-learning condition performed differently in the course than the lecture students. There were differences in what the distance-learning and the lecture students found useful and what they disliked about the course. These findings could be used to help design better distance-learning courses.
