Public Relations And Politics: A Winning Combination For Public School Bond Issues And Tax Referendums, Cindy L. Gibson

Theses

In 1990 voters in the Ritenour School District approved the first of several bond issues that provided for the renovation of district facilities. Following approval of the bond issues, the district success fully passed a Proposition C Rollback Waiver, a type of tax increase only found in Missouri.

Finding the additional funds to effectively manage today's schools is a national concern . Ritenour School Di strict leaders, like so many other public school officials throughout the United States, sought the financial assistance of their community by conducting tax levy and bond issue elections.

Like most successful political campaigns, school referendums …

The Effect Of The Environment On Office Worker Productivity And Creativitiy, Karen D. Clark Jan 2000

The Effect Of The Environment On Office Worker Productivity And Creativitiy, Karen D. Clark

Theses

This paper will explore the effect of the physical and human environment on office worker creativity and productivity.

The study will begin with a discussion of creativity, addressing questions such as: Why do we want creative employees? What value to they bring to an organization? Can the elements that enhance creativity in office workers also enhance productivity? How is creativity enhanced? Why is it that many organizations successfully stifle creativity, thus hampering employee morale and productivity?

Research has shown that the physical environment affects workers' ability to think and function effectively. There is a basic need for aesthetics as a …

A Comparison Of Body-Esteem In Adolescent Girls Between The Hutterite And Mainstream Western Cultures, Amanda Ann Walgren

Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural basis of body-esteem and negative body image in adolescent females. This study focused on the differences between the culture of the Hutterites, an Anabaptist communal society, and the mainstream Western culture in the same geographic area. The Body-Esteem Scale (Mendelson & White, 1982) was administered to 35 Hutterite and 31 mainstream girls between the ages of 12 and 17. The Hutterite girls were found to have significantly higher body-esteem scores than the mainstream girls. These findings add to the vast amount of research linking body-esteem to cultural factors. Several possible …

Immigration And Nationality, Robert Charles Hill, Dana Neacsu Jan 2000

Immigration And Nationality, Robert Charles Hill, Dana Neacsu

Law Faculty Publications

During the year 2000, there were significant developments in immigration law and policy with respect to employment-based immigration, family visas, asylum regulations and jurisprudence, refugee admissions, Temporary Protection Status (TPS) designations, and the implementation of the United Nations Torture Convention.

The net effect of changes in employment-based immigration was a gain to both the business community and to immigrants under most categories. There was a virtual unanimous consent among lawmakers to increase the number of temporary H-1B specialty workers in the United States and to ameliorate some of the unintended consequences of previous legislation such as the Illegal Immigration Reform …

Coherent Structure Analysis Of Spatiotemporal Chaos, Peter Jung, Jichang Wang, Renate Wackerbauer, Kenneth Showalter Jan 2000

Coherent Structure Analysis Of Spatiotemporal Chaos, Peter Jung, Jichang Wang, Renate Wackerbauer, Kenneth Showalter

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We introduce a measure to quantify spatiotemporal turbulence in extended systems. It is based on the statistical analysis of a coherent structure decomposition of the evolving system. Applied to a cellular excitable medium and a reaction-diffusion model describing the oxidation of CO on Pt(100), it reveals power-law scaling of the size distribution of coherent space-time structures for the state of spiral turbulence. The coherent structure decomposition is also used to define an entropy measure, which sharply increases in these systems at the transition to turbulence.

Biomimetic Preparation Of Ha Powders At 37°C In Urea-And Enzyme Urease-Containing Synthetic Body Fluids, Defne Bayraktar, A. Cüneyt Taş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

An important inorganic phase of synthetic bone applications, calcium hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca_10 (PO_ 4 ) 6_(OH_2 ), was prepared as a single-phase and sub-micron bioceramic powder. Carbonated HA powders were synthesized from calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate salts dissolved in synthetic body fluid (SBF) solutions, containing urea (H_2 NCONH_2 ) and enzyme urease, under the biomimetic conditions of 37°C and pH 7.4, with a novel chemical precipitation technique. These powders were also found to contain trace amounts of Na and Mg ions in them, intentionally incorporated by using SBF solutions, instead of pure water, during their synthesis. The …

The Distributed User Modeling Shell System (Dumss): A Conceptual Framework For Eliciting User Models, Thawatchai Piyawat, Monica Adya, Anthony F. Norcio

Management Faculty Research and Publications

With the advances in communication technology, large volumes of information can transfer across continents within a fraction of a second. Nevertheless, computer users still suffer from unpleasant situations when they interact with systems and are required to adapt to systems rather than the other way round. User modeling aims to overcome this problem by enabling computer systems to interact with users according to the users’ models, i.e., goals, knowledge, and preferences of users. Although, user modeling has shown invaluable benefits, methods of capturing user information to build precise and useful user models are still in their early states. This paper …

An Analysis Of Using Expert Systems And Intelligent Agents For The Virtual Library Project At The Naval Surface Warfare Center-Carderock Division, J. Liebowitz, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The Virtual Library Project1 at the Naval Surface Warfare Center/Carderock Division (NSWC/CD) is being developed to facilitate the incorporation and use of library documents via the Internet. These documents typically relate to the design and manufacture of ships for the U.S. Navy Fleet. As such, the libraries will store documents that contain not only text but also images, graphs and design configurations. Because of the dynamic nature of digital documents, particularly those related to design, rapid and effective cataloging of these documents becomes challenging. We conducted a research study to analyze the use of expert systems and intelligent agents to …

Did Bacillus Megaterium Pick Up Plasmid Virulence Genes?, Sharin M. Gabl Jan 2000

Did Bacillus Megaterium Pick Up Plasmid Virulence Genes?, Sharin M. Gabl

Honors Capstones

Plasmids are known to carry genes that allow bacteria to survive in different environments. Virulence genes that cause bacteria to be pathogenic are also found on plasmids. Bacillus megaterium is a non-pathogenic, spore-forming bacteria that is found in soil, but recently a strain of B. megaterium was reported to cause a mild case of diarrhea in an infant. This appears to be the first case of infection caused by B. megaterium (CHI). Bacillus cereus is a related species and a known gastroenteric pathogen. Research has shown that the pathogenicity in some strains of B. cereus is caused by either an …

Novel Role Of Nitric Oxide In Pancreatic Signal Transduction, Rhykka L. Panozzo Jan 2000

Novel Role Of Nitric Oxide In Pancreatic Signal Transduction, Rhykka L. Panozzo

Honors Capstones

The exocrine pancreas’ function is to synthesize and secrete a battery of enzymes in response to secretagogues. Nitric oxide (NO) is a biological messenger in a variety of tissue types, eliciting an impressive variety of biological responses. Biosynthesis of NO in the pancreas is catalyzed by two known nitric oxide synthase isoforms, NOS(I) and NOS(II). However, the role of NO in secretion from pancreatic acinar cells has been unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of nitric oxide on pancreatic secretion as well as its effects on enzymes specific to the ERK signaling cascade, which leads …

Mixed Covolume Methods On Rectangular Grids For Elliptic Problems, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak Jan 2000

Mixed Covolume Methods On Rectangular Grids For Elliptic Problems, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider a covolume method for a system of first order PDEs resulting from the mixed formulation of the variable-coefficient-matrix Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition. The system may be used to represent the Darcy law and the mass conservation law in anisotropic porous media flow. The velocity and pressure are approximated by the lowest order Raviart-Thomas space on rectangles. The method was introduced by Russell [Rigorous Block- centered Discretizations on Irregular Grids: Improved Simulation of Complex Reservoir Systems, Reservoir Simulation Research Corporation, Denver, CO, 1995] as a control-volume mixed method and has been extensively tested by Jones [A …
