Functional Characterization Of Mitogen-Dependent And Self-Perpetuating Nb2 Lymphoma Cell Lines, Charlotte Cockrell

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation involved the functional characterization of four Nb2 sub lines (Nb2-U- 17, Nb2-l l , SFJCD l , and D5) for their mitogenic and apoptotic responses to DEX ± PRL treatment. Many protein factors have been implicated to be crucial in controlling the apoptotic and mitogenic pathways. In conjunction with functional studies, an immunocytochemical investigation of four protein signals (NFKB, IKBa, STAT 5b, and the GR) was undertaken in an attempt to establish a relationship between the functional responsiveness of a given cell line and the concentration of a particular protein marker. Comparison of the functional data obtained for …

The Effect Of The Auap Study Abroad Experience On The Students' Cultural Perceptions, K. James Hartshorn

Faculty Publications

As the Asia University America Program (AUAP) commences its second decade, those who have closely observed this unique study abroad experience are aware of a variety of ways the students seem to benefit from their participation. Some of these benefits are academic and can be seen in the development and improvement of specific language skills, gains in standardized test scores and earned university credit applied toward graduation. However, there seem to be a variety of other valuable benefits that may be a little more difficult to measure. such benefits could include the enlargement of the students' international perspective as world …

Seasonal Initiatives: Sports Stadium Referendums And Voter Turnout, Joe Book Jan 2000

Seasonal Initiatives: Sports Stadium Referendums And Voter Turnout, Joe Book

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Democracy is a system of government in which the people of a state govern themselves under the idea that every person's vote and opinion is equal in the eyes of the government. In its purest form, a democratic government involves all citizens equally in every level of administration. The United States government was founded on this belief that citizens deserve the right to govern themselves, but the system created by the founders of this country was a form of representative democracy. Rebelling against the British monarchy, which would not allow the American colonies a voice in Parliament, the founders of …

International Student-Athlete Adjustment To College: A Preliminary Analysis, Lynn L. Ridinger, Donna L. Pastore

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

This preliminary investigation was undertaken to determine how well international student–athletes adjusted to college relative to their domestic teammates and the general student body. The results revealed that international student-athletes were significantly more well-adjusted to college than international nonathletes. International student–athletes adjusted to college as well as students and student–athletes from the United States. Results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. The effects of gender and ethnicity on adjustment to college were also examined.

The Role Of Information In The U.K. Passenger Rail Industry, Glenn Lyons, Graeme Mclay Jan 2000

The Role Of Information In The U.K. Passenger Rail Industry, Glenn Lyons, Graeme Mclay

Journal of Public Transportation

In 1993, the U.K. passenger rail industry was privatized with expectations of greater investment, increased efficiency, and improved network performance. To date, progress has been mixed and the industry has been subject to a critical national press and passenger complaints that have reached record levels. The industry is continuing to develop a service that can do justice to its privatization. Passenger information is an important aspect of these improvements and national rail journey planning services are now heavily used. However, relatively little consideration has been given to understanding the role that information might play in assisting passengers who have already …

I Spy: The Newsgatherer Under Cover, Diane L. Zimmerman Jan 2000

I Spy: The Newsgatherer Under Cover, Diane L. Zimmerman

Faculty Articles

Hysteria about the press, like the flu, breaks out periodically, and when it does, few of us are better off for having lived through the experience. We are currently on what I sincerely hope will prove to be the receding edge of the latest epidemic ofpublic outrage about the press, and, as usual, the frenzied state has not brought out the best in either the media or its critics.

A Tale Of Two Agencies: A Comparative Analysis Of Fcc And Doj Review Of Telecommunications Mergers, Rachel E. Barkow, Peter W. Huber Jan 2000

A Tale Of Two Agencies: A Comparative Analysis Of Fcc And Doj Review Of Telecommunications Mergers, Rachel E. Barkow, Peter W. Huber

Faculty Articles

Currently, most telecommunications mergers require approval of both the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") and the Department of Justice ("DOJ"). Although the agencies' respective statutory mandates differ-the FCC reviews mergers under the Communications Act's broad "public interest" standard and DOJ follows the competition-based standard of the federal antitrust laws-the agencies themselves both claim to focus their review on what they believe to be the merger's effect on competition. That is, the FCC sees its role as that of a shadow DOJ, analyzing mergers under the public interest standard to deter- mine how they will influence competition in the telecommunications industry. Despite …

Are Business Method Patents Bad For Business?, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss Jan 2000

Are Business Method Patents Bad For Business?, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss

Faculty Articles

This article examines business method patenting. After describing State Street Bank & Trust Co. v. Signature Financial Group, Inc., the Federal Circuit's 1998 decision recognizing business method patents, I discuss the problems arising from extending patent law to the business environment. First, I show why many invalid patents are likely to issue. Second, I review the rationales for intellectual property protection and demonstrate why none are relevant to business methods. Third, I argue that business model patenting can distort competition by insulating inefficient business operations. Because of network effects and lock in, these inefficiencies?and the resulting distortion?can persist even if …

Expressivism In Federalism: A New Defense Of The Anti-Commandeering Rule?, Adam B. Cox Jan 2000

Expressivism In Federalism: A New Defense Of The Anti-Commandeering Rule?, Adam B. Cox

Faculty Articles

The purpose of this Article is to begin investigating the importance of expressivism to any description of structural rights. Specifically, this Article will offer a potential response to the critics of the anti-commandeering rule. The prohibition on commandeering might be defensible, but only if the expressive dimension of governmental action is acknowledged. Part I reviews the conventional criticisms of the New York-Printz rule. According to most commentators, the anti-commandeering rule is ill-defined, ineffective, and arbitrary. Using the rule's perceived inadequacies as a reference point, Part II attempts to construct an expressive defense of the anticommandeering rule. The perceived inadequacies-particularly Printz's …

Straight Out Of The Closet, Devon W. Carbado Jan 2000

Straight Out Of The Closet, Devon W. Carbado

Faculty Articles

This Article is part of a larger intellectual project to encourage a shift in-or at least a broadening of-our conceptualization of discrimination. With this Article, I hope to expand our notion of what it means to be a perpetrator of discrimination. Typically, we define a perpetrator of discrimination as someone who acts intentionally to bring about some discriminatory result. This is a narrow and politically palatable conception. Those of us who unquestionably accept the racial, gender, and heterosexual privileges we have, and those of us who fail to acknowledge our victimless status vis-i-vis racism, sexism, and homophobia, are also perpetrators …

Protection Of Intellectual Property Rights And The Impact Of Trips, Sowmiya R.K. Sikal Jan 2000

Protection Of Intellectual Property Rights And The Impact Of Trips, Sowmiya R.K. Sikal

LLM Theses and Essays

This thesis focuses on the importance of intellectual property rights and its protection in the international arena. Coming from a developing country - India, I have always been fascinated with the area of international intellectual property rights protection because of its severe ramification on the economy and the social structure of developing countries. The impact of heightened protection of intellectual property rights has been a controversial issue between developed and developing countries for many years. In this paper, I have examined intellectual property rights, need for its protection, conventions, treaties and agreements present for the protection of intellectual property including …
