Museum Viewpoint: Fiber Art And The Struggle For Recognition, Melissa Leventon, Lotus Stack, Suzanne Baizerman Jan 2000

Museum Viewpoint: Fiber Art And The Struggle For Recognition, Melissa Leventon, Lotus Stack, Suzanne Baizerman

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Museums are important repositories of culture and play a key role in shaping values concerning art. Indeed, museum acceptance can validate the worth of an artwork, and is often a prerequisite for an artist's long-term success. Contemporary fiber, like textiles in general, occupies a lowly position within the hierarchy of large museums, where it constantly struggles for the position and recognition that other media are automatically granted. Smaller museums and those not focused solely on art can be more accepting, but they, too, discriminate against textiles. In order to challenge this status quo, it is essential to understand how museums …

Performative Textile Gestures, Ann Newdigate Jan 2000

Performative Textile Gestures, Ann Newdigate

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

I wrote that in 1996, when a photograph that I had abandoned 30 years before came back to claim me. The image, of myself and three other young white women on camels in front of the Egyptian pyramids, acquires timelessness because all cars in the large parking lot are artfully invisible. I also wrote that "in the year 2000 I will have been here longer than there". I speak from a constituency that has no continuity with tradition, and which is removed from ancestors. It was the moment when I began to seek a visible format for the complexities …

Perpetuating Ritual Textile Traditions: A Pueblo Example, Laurie D. Webster Jan 2000

Perpetuating Ritual Textile Traditions: A Pueblo Example, Laurie D. Webster

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

For over a thousand years, textiles have played a vital role in Pueblo ritual and social identity, linking past and present and reinforcing cultural bonds between widespread Pueblo communities. The group known collectively as the Pueblo Indians of the southwestern United States includes the Hopi people of northern Arizona, the Acoma, Laguna, and Zuni people of western New Mexico, and a string of Pueblo communities located near the Rio Grande in the vicinity of modem-day Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. Contemporary Pueblo people use virtually the same styles of ceremonial garments as those worn by their ancestors five to six …

Reinventing A Cultural Self: Textile Design And Native American Youth, Wendy Weiss, Mary Lee Johns

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This presentation shows how the University Textiles, Clothing and Design department and the Indian Center of Lincoln, Inc., are collaborating to provide creative textile design programs for a group of 12 at-risk Native American youth, 12-18 years old. Family therapist, Dr. Gloria Gonzalez-Kruger, is conducting a research component which assesses the project's impact on youth development, cultural identity development, and intercultural relationships. The data will provide information on how to develop and implement culturally competent programs for youth.

Fall 1998, the youth began a series of short programs working at the university design studios. They worked with graduate students in …

Textiles, Scholarship, And Art Education: An Art College Perspective, Wendy Landry Jan 2000

Textiles, Scholarship, And Art Education: An Art College Perspective, Wendy Landry

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In many communities the art college is the last formal refuge of active textile-making knowledge and heritage. This location appears to value playful, risky, or challenging material explorations which might result in creative design or meaningful visual expression. This should be the best environment for cultivating adventurous students able to integrate a wide range of experience and resources towards generating new ideas for interesting contemporary textiles. It could be a good place in which to discover how textiles contribute to human experience and history, and how they are meaningful. However, I submit that this art environment is still detrimental to …

Black Image And Identity African-American Art From The Permanent Collection, Daniel A. Siedell Jan 2000

Black Image And Identity African-American Art From The Permanent Collection, Daniel A. Siedell

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

T he presentation of Robert Colescott's groundbreaking solo exhibition, which represented the American Pavilion at the 1997 Venice Biennale, offers a unique opportunity for the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden to display a selection of African-American art from its permanent collection. This exhibition, entitled Black Image and Identity, serves several important purposes. First, it locates Robert Colescott, one of the most important and influential African-American artists of the twentieth century, within the broader historical context of a dynamic and diverse African-American visual arts tradition. Second, it focuses attention on the important influence that Colescott has exerted on younger …

Judith Burton: Visual Nuances, Daniel A. Siedell Jan 2000

Judith Burton: Visual Nuances, Daniel A. Siedell

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The history and development of the pictorial tradition in the West is punctuated by many formal and conceptual tensions, among them the tension between representation and abstraction, between mimesis and personal expression, between objectivity and subjectivity, between the artist and the viewer. The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden is pleased to present Judith Burton: Visual Nuances, a solo exhibition featuring twenty-four paintings and two monotypes by an important Nebraska artist whose aesthetic expression succeeds in celebrating these many tensions and formal subtleties that are such an important part of our visual arts tradition.

However, much attention-perhaps too …

United States Public Health Resources

An expert panel was convened to evaluate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Proposed Guidelines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment” through their application to data sets for chloroform (CHCl3) and dichloroacetic acid (DCA). The panel also commented on perceived strengths and limitations encountered in applying the guidelines to these specific compounds. This latter aspect of the panel’s activities is the focus of this perspective. The panel was very enthusiastic about the evolution of these proposed guidelines, which represent a major step forward from earlier EPA guidance on cancer-risk assessment. These new guidelines provide the latitude to consider diverse scientific data …

A Mao A Minute Real Computers As Virtual Weavers, Lisa Lee Peterson Jan 2000

A Mao A Minute Real Computers As Virtual Weavers, Lisa Lee Peterson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In the mid-1970s, Chinese goods began to flood American markets as a result of President Richard Nixon's historic visit to China in February 1972. Among such trade items as blue Mao jackets and caps with red enameled stars, proletarian black cloth shoes, and little red books were photograph-like woven portraits of the potentates of Communism: Stalin, Lenin, Marx, and Chairman Mao.

Convinced that China had computer-and-loom systems that could instantly weave textile renditions of photographs, I raced off to the textile industry in New York City to weave on these digital wonders. Industry experts quickly disabused me of this idea. …

Fiber Art/Works Of Art: Positioning And Perception In The Marketplace, Alice Zrebiec Jan 2000

Fiber Art/Works Of Art: Positioning And Perception In The Marketplace, Alice Zrebiec

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Contemporary works made of fiber or incorporating textile techniques frequently encounter an identity crisis. Craft? Fiber Art? Fine Art? How do these descriptions limit marketability and representation of the work, or, conversely, open up new horizons for talented artists? The owners of five galleries presented their viewpoints with specific reference to the focus of their galleries, the artists they represent, and the context in which they present textile-related works to the viewing public. They addressed the following issues: How did these galleries evolve their specific visions? Where is their emphasis: on materials and techniques, craftsmanship, or artistic content and expression? …

Nature As Code, Ruth Scheuing Jan 2000

Nature As Code, Ruth Scheuing

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In order to explore 'nature as code', I will look first at the complexities involved in naming and defining "nature" and the assumptions that have historically associated women with nature. I will focus on historical gardens and floral patterns in textiles as cultural constructs of nature. Specifically I will focus on the differences between French formal gardens of the seventeenth century and the picturesque and naturalist English gardens of the eighteenth century. I will examine how these gardens are reflected in textile designs that use floral motifs. Finally, I hope to provide some explanation of the influences of industrial and …

Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner Jan 2000

Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner

Articles

Using Nietzsche's great essay on the uses and disadvantages of history for life as his jumping-off point, Judge Posner examines the utility of the study of history for adjudication and legal scholarship. He argues, following Nietzsche; that the wrong kind of historical study can be very bad for "life " including law, while the right kind-the kind deployed by a pragmatic judge or a policy-oriented legal scholar-may deviate from literal accuracy in the direction of a rhetorical and imaginative narrative of historical events that can be constructively employed in a forward-looking approach to legal problems.

Privacy, Publication, And The First Amendment: The Dangers Of First Amendment Exceptionalism, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2000

Privacy, Publication, And The First Amendment: The Dangers Of First Amendment Exceptionalism, Richard A. Epstein

Articles

The coordination of common law and constitutional norms are of pressing importance on matters of freedom of speech. In the Supreme Court and elsewhere, it is possible to discern two sharply inconsistent attitudes toward this question. One view holds that the First Amendment simply prevents any legislative backsliding from the common law rules that protect freedom of speech and of the press, much as they protect freedom of contract and freedom of action generally. On this view, the standard rule governing damages and injunctive relief apply to speech much as they do anywhere else. On the alternative view of what …

Comparative Dynamics Of Private Sector Influence On Domestic Trade Policy And Propensity For Enhanced International Cooperation, Robert Bejesky Jan 2000

Comparative Dynamics Of Private Sector Influence On Domestic Trade Policy And Propensity For Enhanced International Cooperation, Robert Bejesky

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

The framework of the international trading system is essentially a struggle between: 1) international cooperation substantiated by the dominant economic premises of comparative advantage, which the adherence to which begets more acceptance of freer international trade, and 2) collective group responses to economic impacts of trade within the restraints of respective political institutions of a country.
