Freaking Out, Fitting In, And Finding My Way: Looking Back On Four Months In China, Kathryn M. Neunsinger
Freaking Out, Fitting In, And Finding My Way: Looking Back On Four Months In China, Kathryn M. Neunsinger
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This thesis is a collection of essays in which I explore, discuss, and analyze selected aspects of the semester I spent in China through the CSB/SJU study abroad program. It consists of four essays: "On the Value of Trains," "Through the Layers: Getting Off the Bus and Making it Real," "Little Carrot and the Dalai Lama," and "From Minnesota to the Middle Kingdom and Back Again: Growing and Changing in China." The idea behind the entire collection is that there is more to China than most Americans get through the very limited media coverage of it. Each essay involves a …

Soil Quality Assessment After Weed-Control Tillage In A No-Till Wheat–Fallow Cropping System, T. A. Kettler, Drew J. Lyon, John W. Doran, W. L. Powers, Walter W. Stroup
Soil Quality Assessment After Weed-Control Tillage In A No-Till Wheat–Fallow Cropping System, T. A. Kettler, Drew J. Lyon, John W. Doran, W. L. Powers, Walter W. Stroup
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
Adoption of reduced-tillage fallow systems in the western USA is limited by winter annual grass weeds such as downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.). Moldboard plowing is an effective means of controlling downy brome in winter wheat (Tritcum aestivum L.)–fallow systems. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of plowing and secondary tillage operations, for the purpose of weed control, on soil quality attributes of a silt loam soil that had been cropped in a subtill or no-till (NT) winter wheat–fallow system for more than 20 yr. Compared with undisturbed NT, downy brome populations in plowed …

1. A Process-Oriented Model Of Metacognition: Links Between Motivation And Executive Functioning, John G. Borkowski, Lorna K. S. Chan, Nithi Muthukrishna
Issues in the Measurement of Metacognition
The measurement of metacognition has gone through four overlapping phases: The first phase began with the insightful and stimulating paper of Kreutzer, Leonard, and Flavell (1975) on introspective reports about memory states and processes, followed by an important theoretical chapter on the nature of metamemory (Flavell & Wellman,1977). These early contributions documented, and theoretically clarified, the fact that children could accurately report their knowledge about memory events as they related to a variety of tasks, circumstances, and strategies; furthermore, memory knowledge was shown to be age-related. A second phase quickly followed: The intention here was to show interconnections between memory …

A Sense Of Place And Identity In Aotearoa New Zealand, Kelly Thompson
A Sense Of Place And Identity In Aotearoa New Zealand, Kelly Thompson
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This presentation focuses on a few contemporary artists who use textiles to express connections with place and sense of self, in the "Land of the Long White Cloud", Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a subjective selection, representing both established practitioners and emergent voices, people who are approaching concepts in textile media from varying viewpoints and sources, including cultural, geographical and material relationships.
Being an island nation, in the southern part of the South Pacific, this is a land in which various waves of migration have occurred, beginning with the original settlers, the Maori. According to current archaeological evidence the first …
Approaching Fabrics Through Impressions On Pottery, Penelope B. Drooker
Approaching Fabrics Through Impressions On Pottery, Penelope B. Drooker
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Organic fabrics only rarely survive under archaeological conditions. Particularly in humid temperate or tropical zones, textiles and other fiber perishables rapidly decompose and disappear quite soon after deposition. A few remnants may be found in dry caves or anerobic wet sites, or as charred fragments or metal pseudomorphs, but these represent only a tiny proportion of regional prehistoric fabric production. Fortunately, though, the archaeological record does sometimes yield secondary evidence in the form of impressions on pottery of yam, fabric, and basketry.
Following the theme of this year's TSA symposium, "Approaching Textiles, Varying Viewpoints," this paper focuses on methods and …
Bureaucratic Ideals And Artisanal Reality Survival Strategies In The Production Of Echigo J U, Melissa M. Rinne
Bureaucratic Ideals And Artisanal Reality Survival Strategies In The Production Of Echigo J U, Melissa M. Rinne
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The production of Echigo j u, a fine Japanese ramie textile, is in crisis. Woven on a body-tension 100m from hand-plied threads and often incorporating detailed warp and weft kasuri (ikat), Echigo j u is arguably one of the most sophisticated extant bastfiber traditions in Japan, and perhaps the world. Media and researchers alike regularly laud its ancient production processes, but contemporary makers are facing the almost insurmountable challenge of remaining financially solvent in a rapidly diminishing kimono market, with an increasing scarcity of artisans. One reason that Echigo j u survives today is because it has …
From Paint To Wool: Artist-Weavers At The Victorian Tapestry Workshop, Tina Kane
From Paint To Wool: Artist-Weavers At The Victorian Tapestry Workshop, Tina Kane
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This paper considers the relation between painting and contemporary tapestry. I will be asking the question: does the translation of a painting into a tapestry accomplish something more, categorically, than would the painting on its own? As we will see, this question suggests another, larger one: did tapestry emerge in the twentieth century as an authentic, original artform in its own right?
For years tapestry was considered a mere decorative accessory to painting, in part, because the artist, the designer, did not participate directly in its actual production. In an attempt to redress this prejudice, a model of collaboration between …
Material And The Promise Of The Immaterial, Ingrid Bachmann
Material And The Promise Of The Immaterial, Ingrid Bachmann
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The rhetoric around digital technologies is infused with the utopian promises of deliverance and progress - the promise of another frontier, an original uncharted space, virgin territory, a clean slate, another chance to "get it right". This notion of the frontier has almost mythic proportions in the language and literature of the West. From the 'promised land' offered in the Bible, to the lost Garden of Eden, from Columbus' arrival in the Americas, to the cowboy and Indian films of the 1950's and the space adventure films of the 1980's and 1990's, the notion of the frontier continues to engage …
