Worldviews And The American West: The Life Of The Place Itself, Polly Stewart, Steve Siporin, C. W. Sullivan Iii, Suzi Jones

All USU Press Publications

A diverse group of writers and scholars follow the lead of noted folklorist Barre Toelken and consider, from the inside, the ways in which varied cultures in the American West understand and express their relations to the world around them. As Barre Toelken puts it in The Dynamics of Folklore, "'Worldview' refers to the manner in which a culture sees and expresses its relation to the world around it." In Worldviews and the American West, seventeen notable authors and scholars, employing diverse approaches and styles, apply Toelken's ideas about worldview to the American West. While the contributors represent a range …

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey Jan 2000

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey

All USU Press Publications

Bruce McComiskey is a strong advocate of social approaches to teaching writing. However, he opposes composition teaching that relies on cultural theory for content, because it too often prejudges the ethical character of institutions and reverts unnecessarily to product-centered practices in the classroom. He opposes what he calls the "read-this-essay-and-do-what-the-author-did method of writing instruction: read Roland Barthes's essay 'Toys' and write a similar essay; read John Fiske's essay on TV and critique a show." McComiskey argues for teaching writing as situated in discourse itself, in the constant flow of texts produced within social relationships and institutions. He urges writing teachers …

Better Astronomical Images By Selecting "Moments Of Good Seeing" In Captured Video, James Chauvin Jan 2000

Better Astronomical Images By Selecting "Moments Of Good Seeing" In Captured Video, James Chauvin

Theses

This research project attempted to create software by which images of astronomical objects, captured through land based telescopes could, be enhanced to reduce the effects of the earth's turbulent atmosphere. Typically astronomical images are enhanced by registering, shifting and co-adding captured images of an object of interest. Our approach is similar in that co-adding is also utilized, however we take the typical procedure a step further. Our hypothesis is that by selecting certain images from the captured group, via the application of a simple quality metric, the output of the co-adding process will yield a higher quality image than by …

Machian Epistemology And Its Part In František Kupka's Painterly Cognition Of Reality, John G. Hatch Jan 2000

Machian Epistemology And Its Part In František Kupka's Painterly Cognition Of Reality, John G. Hatch

Visual Arts Publications

A consensus has emerged amongst art historians that portrays the work the Czech painter, František Kupka (1871-1957), as fluctuating between differing styles and never resolving itself into one straightforward and single-minded direction beyond abstraction. Visually this is true, but for Kupka the visual was secondary in that it plays a subsidiary role to the process involved in the creation of the work itself. A failure to properly understand this process has resulted in an inaccurate reading of Kupka's art, essentially missing the point that his paintings embody in their imagery the cognitive process involved in their creation. Significantly, as I …

Electronic Miscommunication And The Defamatory Sense, Jacquelyn Burkell Jan 2000

Electronic Miscommunication And The Defamatory Sense, Jacquelyn Burkell

FIMS Publications

This article examines the effect that cultural and technological changes have had on interpersonal communication and aims to provide an interdisciplinary explanation for the recent proliferation of defamation in electronic media. The authors argue that the absence of certain extra-linguistic cues and established cultural convention in the electronic environment often results in miscommunication which — if not itself defamatory — gives rise to emotional exchanges between interlocutors in a manner that provokes defamation. The authors begin their analysis with a discussion of defamation law as a recipient-oriented tort, demonstrating the importance of the context of communication in the determination of …

Digital Songlines: The Use Of Modern Communication Technology By An Aboriginal Community In Remote Australia, Lydia Buchtmann Jan 2000

Digital Songlines: The Use Of Modern Communication Technology By An Aboriginal Community In Remote Australia, Lydia Buchtmann

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

In the mid-1980s the AUSSAT satellite brought television and radio to remote Australia for the first time. There was concern amongst Aboriginal communities that the imposition of mass media without consultation could result in permanent damage to culture and language. However, over the years, the Warlpiri people have adopted modern communication technology including radio, video making, locally produced television, and more recently on-line services. This paper examines why the Warlpiri have adopted modern communication technology and whether there have been social changes as a result. It also looks at the pioneering media work by the Pitjantjatjara people at Ernabella in …

Dracula And The Gothic Imagination Of War, Bryan Alexander Jan 2000

Dracula And The Gothic Imagination Of War, Bryan Alexander

Journal of Dracula Studies

When Jonathan Harker first describes Castle Dracula, his journals rely on the language of war. Unable to pin down the castle’s site on an Ordnance Map, Harker is able to see instead the liminal city of Bistritz in terms of a historic siege (11). As he approaches nearer, Harker relates a companion’s (mis)quotation from Burger’s “Lenore,” a line spoken by an undead soldier, all too recently at war (17). Castle Dracula itself appears textually as a mix of military and Gothic discourses, whose “frowning walls and dark window openings” (21) serve both to situate Harker in classically Gothic space, and …

Vampire Crime, Katherine Ramsland Jan 2000

Vampire Crime, Katherine Ramsland

Journal of Dracula Studies

While most of the vampire subculture these days is a benign form of role-playing, there have been cases of people who were inspired by the predatory image to kill. To their minds, the vampire mythos provides a framework that inspires and even licenses certain types of violent behaviors. Although this bloodthirsty impulse reaches back centuries and crosses cultures, I want to examine the mythology’s influence on three cases in recent American culture: Roderick Ferrell, James Riva, and Richard Trenton Chase. I will take one case at a time and then discuss how they attach to the vampire frame.

Finding A Common Ground: Working With The Georgian National Archives To Create A Trilingual Database, Peter Carini, Kara Drake Jan 2000

Finding A Common Ground: Working With The Georgian National Archives To Create A Trilingual Database, Peter Carini, Kara Drake

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

On two separate occasions over the past four years, the authors traveled to the former Soviet Republic of Georgia as part of a team charged with the work of training Georgian archivists in international descriptive standards as part of a database project. The Sakartvelo Database Project provided an introduction to Georgian history, culture, and the development of the country's archival program. It also provided a picture of what it is like to work in a former Soviet republic and the reality of what it is to handle language barriers and physical and environmental obstacles.

International Take-Down Policy: A Proposal For The Wto And Wipo To Establish International Copyright Procedural Guidelines For Internet Service Providers, John T. Soma, Natalie A. Norman Jan 2000

International Take-Down Policy: A Proposal For The Wto And Wipo To Establish International Copyright Procedural Guidelines For Internet Service Providers, John T. Soma, Natalie A. Norman

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Copyright owners have become increasingly concerned with online copyright infringement by Internet service providers. As a result, lawmakers have attempted to determine the most appropriate mechanism by which to impose third party liability upon these ISPs. The internet makes it extremely difficult to identify online copyright infringement in general, and unfortunately, the task becomes even more difficult in the international context. This paper suggests that a practical solution to the problem might include creating international procedural guidelines, which would provide copyright owners with viable means to protect their rights. The authors compare international standards for ISP liability for third party …

Vice Advertising Under The Supreme Court's Commercial Speech Doctrine: The Shifting Central Hudson Analysis, Michael Hoefges, Milagros Rivera-Sanchez Jan 2000

Vice Advertising Under The Supreme Court's Commercial Speech Doctrine: The Shifting Central Hudson Analysis, Michael Hoefges, Milagros Rivera-Sanchez

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The extent to which the government should have the ability to regulate "vice" products and activities, such as tobacco, alcohol and gaming, is extremely controversial. This article examines the commercial speech doctrine's "vice" advertising cases from 1986 through 1999 and the Central Hudson analysis. Remarkably, by 1999, the Court appears to have completely reversed its position regarding "vice" advertising, and in fact, it seems to have virtually eliminated the "vice" advertising distinction. As a result, it seems as though equal treatment is required under the First Amendment for all truthful, non-deceptive advertising for lawful products and services. The authors argue …

Loki Surfs For Porn: An Analysis Of The Discord The Internet May Cause In Obscenity Law, Alison E. Howell

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Libraries have been presented with the perplexing problem of whether or not they should be required, or whether they are even allowed, to filter users' access (specifically children's access) to obscene and/or pornographic materials on the Internet. Such access could cause the public to accuse libraries of providing and tolerating obscenity. This note explores the potential chaos that open access to obscene and pornographic material on the internet may bring to the definition of community standards and the hoops that modem e-pornographers must jump through. The author discusses the basics of First Amendment law, analyzes the flaws in these doctrines …
