A Multi-Case Investigation Of Environmental Legitimation In Annual Reports, Arline Savage, A. J. Cataldo, Jeff Rowlands
A Multi-Case Investigation Of Environmental Legitimation In Annual Reports, Arline Savage, A. J. Cataldo, Jeff Rowlands
Accounting
In this chapter, a legitimacy theory framework for corporate environmental disclosure is empirically investigated, using a multi-case research design. Legitimation strategies in the 1991-1995 annual reports of two Canadian-owned pulp and paper companies are explored. The findings support legitimacy theory as an explanation for voluntary environmental disclosure in annual reports.

Prosecuting Violence/Reconstructing Community, Anthony V. Alfieri
Prosecuting Violence/Reconstructing Community, Anthony V. Alfieri

For two centuries, the private violence of American history has paraded into courts for public trial. Often dramatized by the spectacle of rape and murder, the public trials of private violence increasingly are seen to decide the fates of both the accused and the victim of crime. The fate of community, whether the community of the victim, the accused, or the public, seems at first blush untouched by such trials. Like victims and their families, however, communities struck by violence suffer profound loss. That loss is expressed in the destruction of public discourse, reason, and citizenship. This public ruin is …
The Death Of Privacy?, A. Michael Froomkin
The Death Of Privacy?, A. Michael Froomkin
Articles
The rapid deployment of privacy-destroying technologies by governments and businesses threatens to make informational privacy obsolete. The first part of this article describes a range of current technologies to which the law has yet to respond effectively. These include: routine collection of transactional data, growing automated surveillance in public places, deployment of facial recognition technology and other biometrics, cell-phone tracking, vehicle tracking, satellite monitoring, workplace surveillance, Internet tracking from cookies to "clicktrails", hardware-based identifiers, intellectual property-protecting "snitchware," and sense-enhanced searches that allow observers to see through everything from walls to clothes. The cumulative and reinforcing effect of these technologies may …

Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia
Articles
The Internet, serving as the largest network of computers in the world, has provided the horizontal parallax over which all can participate in communication and transaction, education and entertainment4 It also serves a community of participants and beneficiaries whose goals are not always shared or legal. The rise of this advanced technology has led to a new "red light district."
Unlike the physical spaces available for the distribution of pornography and sexual favors for money, the Internet, with its lack of structure, has led to an unimaginable amount of pornography available for any on-line spectator.' Information necessary for consummation of …

Nuestro Espacio Cyber: The Internet As Expressive Space For Latina/Os In The United States, Richard Pineda
Selected Works Temporary Series
The Latina/o community is in the midst of a major demographic shift upwards- Along with this population growth, there has been an explosion of Latina,/os across the spectrum of popular culture. However, lack of access to mass-media outlets and social constructions in mainstream society pose obstacles to Latina/o freedom of expression. Meanwhile, the Internet is evolving into a powerful platform for communication and freedom of speech- By developing a stronger Latina/o presence online, it may be possible to channel the power of the Internet as a vehicle for empowerment, expression and freedom of speech.

Pornography, Privacy, And Digital Self-Help, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 133 (2000), Tom W. Bell
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
Pornography and privacy share a subtle relationship in internet law and policy. Legislation attempting to restrict online speech considered indecent or harmful to minors is subject to exacting scrutiny. Legislation that regulates online speech thought to be harmful to its readers because of privacy concerns should be subjected to the same level of scrutiny. The availability of self-help remedies should govern the scope of legislation affecting online privacy and the alternatives offered by digital self-help solutions makes state regulation constitutionally suspect and functionally inferior. Self-help can be more effective than legislation in protecting online privacy. Cookie management software, use of …

The Erosion Of American Copyright Protection: The Fairness In Music Licensing Act, 18 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 791 (2000), Ralph Carter
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
The author of this article begins by giving the reader a taste of the history of American copyright protection. A synopsis of the statutes, case history, and industry development are fully explained. Furthermore, the author criticizes the enactment of the Fairness in Music Licensing Act. The author further refutes arguments made by proponents of the Act and examines the underlying motives of restaurant lobbyists. This comment also shows the real victims of the Act's exemptions---the songwriters. The comment concludes by advocating the return of the "home use exemption" in the Copyright Act of 1976.

A recent scandal erupted in the press when a painting that was offered for sale on an Internet auction site was believed to be a lost contemporary masterpiece. The seller appeared to be a married man who was cleaning junk out of his garage, including a painting that his wife would not let him hang in the house. A bidding frenzy drove the price from the opening bid of 25 cents to more than $135,000 from a buyer in the Netherlands. After the sale was finished (it was ended by EBay when they learned he bid on the painting himself …
