Carbon Monoxide Production Is Not Enhanced By Nitrogenase Activity, P. Milligan, G. M. King Dec 2000

Carbon Monoxide Production Is Not Enhanced By Nitrogenase Activity, P. Milligan, G. M. King

Faculty Publications

A diverse group of nitrogen-fixing bacteria and two heme degraders were grown with and without fixed nitrogen sources under oxic and suboxic conditions, with and without addition of heme-containing compounds. Several of the strains produced carbon monoxide (CO) under one or more of these conditions, but nitrogenase activity did not stimulate rates of production relative to controls. Although nitrogenase can reduce CO2 to CO in vitro in the absence of N2, this process likely contributes minimally to CO production in soils under in situ conditions. In contrast, myoglobin or hematin addition under oxic conditions significantly stimulated CO production by the …

Newspaper Coverage Of Nonreligious Paranormal Phenomena: A Content Analysis Of The San Antonio Light And San Antonio Express-News, Pamela L. Parmer

Theses & Dissertations

A content analysis was used to examine how paranormal phenomena was portrayed in the San Antonio daily newspapers and determine if there was any trend in portrayals from 1970 to 1990. The San Antonio Light and the San Antonio Express-News were analyzed from March to May 1970 and March to May 1990. The analysis included data from the individual papers, comparing and contrasting the data from the two time periods. The data between the two papers also was compared and contrasted. The phenomena included unidentified flying objects, aliens, psychics, and ghosts. It excluded religious phenomena such as reincarnation, witchcraft, and …

An Investigation Into The Effect Of Plate Hardness, And Surface Speed Differential On Flexographic Gear Marking, Wisit Wirojrungson Dec 2000

An Investigation Into The Effect Of Plate Hardness, And Surface Speed Differential On Flexographic Gear Marking, Wisit Wirojrungson

Theses

Gear marking is a print defect in flexography. It appears as a uniformly spaced pattern of lateral alternating dark and light bands along the web length corresponding to the distance between gear teeth. A comprehensive definition characterizes gear marking as a regular pattern attributable to metal burrs, nicks, debris, or other flaws that lead to unsmooth movement somewhere in the mechanical system of the press. Gear marking can be caused by a multitude of different factors. In most cases, gear marking results from more than one phenomenon. The objective of this study was to investigate some factors that were expected …

Preliminary Assessment Of Client Interest In And Needs Of The New England Environmental Finance Center, New England Environmental Finance Center, University Of Southern Maine

Planning

The New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC) has been conceived as a knowledge-based clearinghouse, training, and change-agent program aimed at helping EPA's constituencies find financially successful approaches to environmental improvements. The NE/EFC will develop approaches to needs of particular priority in New England and potentially useful throughout the nation; share such approaches through the EFC national network; and help make tools from that network accessible throughout New England. In 1999 we began exploring with potential users how this ninth of the nation's EFCs might best address the region's needs. The assessment continued through the Muskie School's EFC proposal to EPA …

Influence Of Infected Cell Growth State On Bacteriophage Reactivation Levels, Dana R. Kadavy, Julie J. Shaffer, Susan E. Lott, Thomas A. Wolf, Cathy E. Bolton, William H. Gallimore, Eugene L. Martin, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Tyler A. Kokjohn Dec 2000

Influence Of Infected Cell Growth State On Bacteriophage Reactivation Levels, Dana R. Kadavy, Julie J. Shaffer, Susan E. Lott, Thomas A. Wolf, Cathy E. Bolton, William H. Gallimore, Eugene L. Martin, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Tyler A. Kokjohn

Papers in Microbiology

Reactivation of UV-C-inactivated Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteriophages D3C3, F116, G101, and UNL-1 was quantified in host cells infected during the exponential phase, during the stationary phase, and after starvation (1 day, 1 and 5 weeks) under conditions designed to detect dark repair and photoreactivation. Our experiments revealed that while the photoreactivation capacity of stationary-phase or starved cells remained about the same as that of exponential-phase cells, in some cases their capacity to support dark repair of UV-inactivated bacteriophages increased over 10-fold. This enhanced reactivation capacity was correlated with the ca. 30- fold-greater UV-C resistance of P. aeruginosa host cells that were …

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Contrast And Resolution Of A Printing System Using The Rit Contrast Resolution Test Target, Eliot Harper Dec 2000

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Contrast And Resolution Of A Printing System Using The Rit Contrast Resolution Test Target, Eliot Harper

Theses

A problem arises when different printing systems are used to print images. Different systems have considerably different contrast and resolution capabilities while an individual printing system might have a low resolution capability, the system may have the ability to render low contrast detail. Similarly, if a printing system has a high resolution capability, it does not necessarily mean that such a system has the ability to render low contrast detail well. Such contrast and resolution restrictions may be attributed to the capabilities of the PostScript interpreter, the screening method used by the RIP, the image transfer method of the output …

A Quest For Common Ground: Communication Factors Among Latino Patients, Medical Practitioners And Interpreters In The Daviess County, Kentucky Area, Sandra Merkel-Finley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Statistical evaluation of the number of Hispanics in the United States in a given year varies. This research illuminates for health care providers and interpreters cultural factors to consider in the delivery of patient-centered and efficacious care for the ethnic patient, specifically the Latino. The research project answered the question What culture-related factors impact effective communication between Mexican patients and American medical nurses in the Daviess County, Kentucky area? The project focused on the interpersonal aspects of culture …
