Advertising And Culture: Variations On The Theme Of Individualism In Korean And American Magazine Advertising, Joyce M. Wolburg, Hoh Kim Jan 2000

Advertising And Culture: Variations On The Theme Of Individualism In Korean And American Magazine Advertising, Joyce M. Wolburg, Hoh Kim

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Social scientists regard the U.S. and the Republic of Korea as countries with opposing cultural values. Given this contrast, the advertising of each culture is expected to differ. An examination of magazine advertising indicates that American ads strongly express the individualistic culture; however, the Korean ads not only express collectivistic ideas but individualistic ones as well. Although this phenomenon is not entirely surprising given the strength of Western influence, Korean individualistic messages are different from American individualistic messages. This suggests that expressions of individualism in ads blend with the elements of each culture to produce uniquely different messages ..

Elisión De La /D/ Intervocálica Postónica, Orlando Alba Jan 2000

Elisión De La /D/ Intervocálica Postónica, Orlando Alba

Faculty Publications

Dissertations

The researcher conducted an historical case study of the Garfield High School Pregnant Minor Program (1975–1999) which is one of three pregnant minor programs in the San Diego Unified School District. The primary purpose of this study was to provide data about the history and background of this program which may be significant to the decision makers who develop policies regarding pregnant minor programs in the district. Ten female graduates of the University of San Diego's Law School (JD), Business School (MBA) and Educational Administration Programs were interviewed by the researcher. These women have been in the workplace for an extended period of time, are currently raising at least one …

Legibility: How Precedents Established In Print Impact On-Screen And Dynamic Typography, Heidi Specht

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The printed word has been commonplace in society for over 500 years; the written word has been in existence for thousands. The primary intent of the written or printed word has historically been to be read. With that goal, rules and formats have developed over the centuries as aids to legibility. Naturally, these guidelines have been developed for the printed, or static typographic page. As our sophistication with and acceptance of technology grows, however, we increasingly turn to the computer or television screen for written information. Additionally, graphic designers and artists are questioning the role of the printed word as …

Democracy Within Federalism: An Attempt To Reestablish Middle Ground, Alexander Hanebeck Jan 2000

Democracy Within Federalism: An Attempt To Reestablish Middle Ground, Alexander Hanebeck

San Diego Law Review

the conflict between the two levels of government, state and federal, is a very old one. The main battleground of this debate, however, has been over states' rights and the protection of individual rights by federal courts. As John Hart Ely observed, this is not where federalism hangs in the balance. He correctly points out what is becoming obvious in recent Supreme Court decisions. For the existence of states as independent entities, it is more important where legislative competence lies. 3 This Article is concerned with the groundwork for a debate over the distribution of legislative competence, because it attempts …

Is Lowering The Age At Which Juveniles Can Be Transferred To Adult Criminal Court The Answer To Juvenile Crime? A State-By-State Assessment

San Diego Law Review

The trend toward "get tough" policies concerning juveniles has swept through just about every state in the nation, affecting younger and younger minors. In Texas in 1997, not long after a tougher law was passed, a fourteen-year-old girl accused of murder became the youngest juvenile ever to stand trial as an adult in Tarrant County. Texas lowered the age from fifteen to fourteen in a 1995 revision of the state's juvenile justice code. In Michigan, an eleven-year-old boy, Nathaniel Abraham, became one of the youngest persons in the United States to be tried for murder as an adult; he allegedly …

A Primer On The Civil Trial Of A Sexually Violent Predator, Joan Comparet Cassani Jan 2000

A Primer On The Civil Trial Of A Sexually Violent Predator, Joan Comparet Cassani

San Diego Law Review

Involuntary commitment' for sexually violent predators became the law in California in 1996. This law, the Sexually Violent Predator Act, provides for a civil jury trial.! This trial is unique, since some of the procedural protections afforded a criminal defendant apply. For example, a unanimous jury must find, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the individual is a sexually violent predator.

The Act provides for the treatment of the individual if committed, and carefully crafts the procedures for the mental health evaluation and review process. Unfortunately, the part of the statute that provides for the civil trial is not as tightly …
