State-Resolved Molecular Photoionization Dynamics Of Polyatomic Systems: Effects Of Non-Linear Changes In Molecular Geometry., James Scott Miller
State-Resolved Molecular Photoionization Dynamics Of Polyatomic Systems: Effects Of Non-Linear Changes In Molecular Geometry., James Scott Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An important topic in the absorption of vacuum ultraviolet photons by molecules is the correlation between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom during photoionization. However, no previous investigations have probed the correlation between bending excitation and photoejection dynamics over a wide spectral range. We present the first such studies by reporting the influence of bending excitation following CO2 3sigmau --1 and N2O 7sigma--1 photoionization over the photon energy range (15 eV < hvexc < 200 eV). Using dispersed fluorescence spectroscopy in conjunction with synchrotron radiation, we determine the vibrational branching ratio v+ = 0,1,0 0,0,0 for the CO2+ (B 2Sigmau+) and N2O+ (A 2Sigma+) electronic states. The relative rate of production of the upsilon2 = 1 upper vibrational state varies over a broad ionization energy range, and in ways that are largely unanticipated. These branching ratios exhibit a strong thermal dependence, and we are able to separate out effects due to hot-band excitation from those that are due to vibronic coupling. The data indicate that the continuum electron is responsible for the observed energy dependence in CO2 3sigma u--1 photoionization. This is a previously unobserved result. Additional studies examine the influence of simultaneous excitation in the bending and symmetric stretching modes in N2O+ [A 2Sigma+, v + = (1,1,0)] to determine the effect of changing the energy separation of vibronically coupled potential surfaces. Finally, the CF4 + [D 2A1, v+ = (1,0,0,0)/(0,0,0,0)] branching ratio is studied, which provides the first experimental observation of a predicted low-energy shape resonance in this photoionization pathway.
Atomic And Electronic Properties Of Neutral And Cationic Metallic Clusters., Andrew Marc Kolchin
Atomic And Electronic Properties Of Neutral And Cationic Metallic Clusters., Andrew Marc Kolchin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We find optimal atomic and electronic structures for neutral and singly, positively charged clusters of beryllium and beryllium-lithium (of the form BeLik) using density functional theory in the local spin density approximation. Ions are moved with a steepest descent method, and the electronic wave functions optimized using a fictitious dynamics with simulated annealing, as conceived by Car and Parrinello. Shell-like orbitals, filling angular momentum states in the order: 1s 2p 2s 1d, are obtained for the beryllium clusters. The same ordering is found for the BeLik clusters which indicates a departure from the ordering found in pure alkali clusters by …
The Design And Construction Of Novel Near -Infrared Time -Correlated Single Photon Counting Devices For The Identification Of Analytes In Multiplexed Applications., Emanuel Austin Waddell Jr
The Design And Construction Of Novel Near -Infrared Time -Correlated Single Photon Counting Devices For The Identification Of Analytes In Multiplexed Applications., Emanuel Austin Waddell Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This manuscript details the design, construction, and application of novel near infrared time correlated single photon counting devices to the identification of analytes in analytical separations. The thrust of this research is to provide a simple, low cost technique for the high-speed identification of DNA sequencing bases that are labeled with a series of unique near infrared fluorophores. These fluorophores are unique because they possess the same emission and absorption maxima, but different fluorescence lifetimes. Consequently, they allow analytes to be discriminated by fluorescence lifetime as opposed to color. The first goal of this dissertation research was to implement a …
Studies In Organized Media: Part I. Characterization And Use Of Polymeric Chiral Surfactants As Pseudo-Stationary Phases For Separation In Capillary Electrophoresis. Part Ii. Use Of Cyclodextrins In Capillary Electrophoresis And In The Formation Of Linear Aggregates., Houphouet Hyacinthe Yarabe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research involves the synthesis and characterization of charged chiral polymeric surfactants for their use as pseudostationary phases in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). Poly sodium N-undecanoyl L-valinate (poly L-SUV), poly sodium N-undecanoyl L-threoninate (poly L-SUT), and poly sodium N-undecanoyl L-isoleucinate (poly L-SUIL) were synthesized in this study. The partial specific volumes of these polymers, determined using a densitometer, were 0.81, 0.77, and 0.83 mL/g, respectively. Molecular weights of 9,984, 11,252 and 10,563 were obtained for poly L-SUV, poly L-SUT and poly L-SUIL, respectively by using sedimentation equilibrium. In addition, sedimentation coefficients of 0.67 and 1.03 S were found for poly L-SUV …

A Narrative Study Of Selected Introductory College Biology Students' Struggles To Gain An Understanding Of Scale And Measurement., Juliana Guillory Hinton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Case studies, developed with criteria from Yin's Case Study Research: Design and Methods (1994), probed single mental constructs of four introductory college biology students who were recent high school graduates. Data sources included autobiographical essays, interviews, coconstructed concept maps (Wandersee & Abrams, 1993), a videotape questionnaire, and graphics. A multisensory microscopy experiment provided the setting for the construction of shared meanings by the participants. Concept maps were used then to explore the existing cognitive framework of the participants. This research affirmed the value of supporting graphic organizers for understanding science (Good & Berger, 1998; Hyerle, 1996; Trowbridge & Wandersee, 1998). …
Understanding The Biological Concept "Bird": A Kindergarten Case Study., Dilek Buchholz
Understanding The Biological Concept "Bird": A Kindergarten Case Study., Dilek Buchholz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study of 14 students in a metropolitan public school in the Deep South was to find out, during a period of three months, what these kindergarten-aged children knew about birds, whether this knowledge represented current scientific thought, if such science instruction meaningfully affected their prior knowledge, and if so, what the factors during instruction that seemed to influence their understanding of the concept of bird were. The research was conducted in three phases; preinstruction interviews, instruction, and postinstruction interviews. The theoretical framework for this research was based on the Human Constructivism theory of …
Hydrodynamics, Bottom Boundary Layer Processes And Sediment Transport On The South-Central Louisiana Inner Shelf: The Influence Of Extratropical Storms And Bathymetric Modification., David Alton Pepper
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The south-central Louisiana inner shelf has several distinctive characteristics that are not well accounted for by common hydrodynamic and sediment transport models, including a high-frequency wave regime, low fair-weather hydrodynamic energy levels, a coastal orientation parallel to most storm approaches, and a prominent submerged sand body (Ship Shoal). To address these unique considerations, inner-shelf processes were studied using three instrumentation systems deployed on the seaward and landward sides of the shoal between November, 1998 and January, 1999. These instruments were designed to measure hydrodynamic characteristics, suspended sediment concentration, and bed level, which were used to calculate bottom boundary layer parameters …
Evaluating Alternative Instructional Strategies To Improve Sixth Graders' Reading Comprehension., Emma Mccall Schorzman
Evaluating Alternative Instructional Strategies To Improve Sixth Graders' Reading Comprehension., Emma Mccall Schorzman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although little empirical evidence supporting various instructional strategies for teaching reading comprehension exists, many educators utilize particular strategies assuming their effectiveness. Because difficulties with comprehension are intensified as students reach the intermediate grades, it is necessary that middle school educators instruct using strategies empirically supported through research. This mixed-method study examined the effectiveness of the Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (Stauffer, 1969), the PreP technique (Langer, 1981), and graphic organizers (Barron, 1969), three popular strategies among middle school teachers. Six teachers participated in the two-group design, pretest/posttest study; over a seven-week period, three of the teachers instructed their sixth-grade students using lessons …
An Information Theoretic Approach To Content Based Image Retrieval., John Morris Zachary Jr
An Information Theoretic Approach To Content Based Image Retrieval., John Morris Zachary Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We propose an information theoretic approach to the representation and comparison of color features in digital images to handle various problems in the area of content-based image retrieval. The interpretation of color histograms as joint probability density functions enables the use of a wide range of concepts from information theory to be considered in the extraction of color features from images and the computation of similarity between pairs of images. The entropy of an image is a measure of the randomness of the color distribution in an image. Rather than replacing color histograms as an image representation, we demonstrate that …
Well Integrity Mechanism, Failure, And Testing In Shallow Marine Sediments., Desheng Zhou
Well Integrity Mechanism, Failure, And Testing In Shallow Marine Sediments., Desheng Zhou
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The leak-off test (LOT) is an in-situ method for testing casing shoe integrity in a well. It is used to evaluate the cement and formation integrity relative to the well plan specifications. The results determine whether any remedial cementing or corrective actions are required and are a basis for planning future wells in the area. Typical analysis of LOTs assumes an elastic wellbore and involves identification of linear trends on the recorded plots. However, LOTs recorded in shallow marine sediments (SMS) are inherently nonlinear and their analysis is a problem. Starting from the analyses of shallow soil properties, LOT plots, …

Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark
Cancer Mortality And *Environment In Louisiana: A Geographical Inquiry., Mihye Bark
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in the U.S. Louisiana mortality rates for all sites of cancer have exceeded national rates since 1950. Even though concern about the issues of environmental cancer is growing, conclusive results have not been reported. Previous studies differed in data source, data quality, time of observation, and statistical procedure, making comparison of results problematic. The spatial patterns of the most common cancer sites in Louisiana (from 1953 to 1993) and their relationships with environmental factors were investigated, using GIS software and statistical software. To provide a clear understanding of how the spatial …

"Awakenings" On Relational Ways Of Knowing: An Ecological Perspective On Curriculum., Elaine Kent Riley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The human species and all nonhuman forms on the planet, have co-evolved over a 14 billion-year process, yet many people operate as if planetary life existed to support and sustain human well-being alone. Separation, dualism, and power-over ways of knowing fuel a human-centered attitude which exalts our own species above the rest of the natural world. How humans will live with the earth in the next millennium (Hogan, 1996) is one of the most fundamental questions arising at the onset of the year 2000. The planet cannot sustain continued degradation of ecological systems stemming from depletion of natural resources and …

This article discusses inversions for bottom geoacoustic properties using broadband acoustic signals obtained from explosive sources. The experimental data used for the inversions are SUS charge explosions acquired on a vertical hydrophone array during the Shelf Break Primer Experiment conducted south of New England in the Middle Atlantic Bight in August 1996. The SUS signals were analyzed for their time-frequency behavior using wavelets. The group speed dispersion curves were obtained from the wavelet scalogram of the SUS signals. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used for the inversion of sound speeds in the water column and compressional wave speeds in the …

The Law Professor As Schizophrenic, Suzanna Sherry
The Law Professor As Schizophrenic, Suzanna Sherry
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Neal Devins says that we don't put political science into our casebooks and Gerald Rosenberg levels the same charge at our scholarship. And so it has fallen to me to defend the ranks of law professors from these scurrilous accusations. Unfortunately, I can't do it: Rosenberg, at least, is largely right. Rosenberg's delightful little polemic has accurately diagnosed the problem. Law professors as a group are too arrogant, too disdainful of empirical information in favor of grand abstractions, and appallingly willing to write in disciplines of which they are woefully ignorant. There are many exceptions, of course: with or without …

Assessing The Practicality And Constitutionality Of Alaska's Split-Recovery Punitive Damages Statute, Scott Dodson
Assessing The Practicality And Constitutionality Of Alaska's Split-Recovery Punitive Damages Statute, Scott Dodson
Faculty Publications
In 1997, Alaska responded to its reputation for unusually high punitive awardsby amending its punitive damages statuteto require that 50% of any punitive damages award be deposited into the general fund of the state.Such “split-recovery” statutes attempt to reduce some of the plaintiff's windfall by allocating part of the punitive award to the state.Although the plaintiff shares in the award to compensate her for bringing the punitive claim in the first place, the state receives the balance to use for the public benefit. This Note evaluates the practicality and constitutionality of Alaska’s split- recovery statute. Part I reviews the nature and purpose …

Passion, Context, And Lawyering Skills: Choosing Among Simulated And Real Clinical Experiences, Deborah Maranville
Passion, Context, And Lawyering Skills: Choosing Among Simulated And Real Clinical Experiences, Deborah Maranville
Clinical Law Review
In this article I argue that the common topology, which divides "clinical" courses into simulation courses, "live"client clinics, and "externships," has become more misleading than helpful, masking both differences within categories and similarities among them. In order to take the next steps in transforming the law school curriculum we should abandon this typology and focus instead on three primary achievements of "clinical" methodologies: - generating passion in our students, - providing context for their learning, - teaching lawyering skills.

Persistence Differences In Community College Courses Taught In Classrooms And Through Alternative Formats, Andrew A. Runyan
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
While distance education programs continue to expand, the occurrence of higher dropout rates in those programs as compared to the same courses offered in lecture/lab settings remains a point of contention between supporters and detractors of non-traditional forms of education. This study used a foundation of research on dropout in higher education as the basis for an investigation of dropout rates in non-traditional forms of instruction in a community college setting. Course delivery formats studied included videotape-based courses, Internet-based courses, and courses offered in a self-paced laboratory environment. For each of these formats, the same course, offered in a lecture/lab …
