Microhollow Cathode Discharge Excimer Lamps, Karl H. Schoenbach, Ahmed El-Habachi, Mohamed M. Moselhy, Wenhui Shi, Robert H. Stark Jan 2000

Microhollow Cathode Discharge Excimer Lamps, Karl H. Schoenbach, Ahmed El-Habachi, Mohamed M. Moselhy, Wenhui Shi, Robert H. Stark

Bioelectrics Publications

Microhollow cathode discharges are high-pressure, nonequilibrium gas discharges between a hollow cathode and a planar or hollow anode with electrode dimensions in the 100 μm range. The large concentration of high-energy electrons, in combination with the high-gas density favors excimer formation. Excimer emission was observed in xenon and argon, at wavelengths of 128 and 172 nm, respectively, and in argon fluoride and xenon chloride, at 193 and 308 nm. The radiant emittance of the excimer radiation was found to increase monotonically with pressure. However, due to the decrease in source size with pressure, the efficiency (ratio of excimer radiant power …

Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Captopril And Its Application In Pharmacokinetic Studies In Healthy Subjects, Zamri Chik Jan 2000

Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Captopril And Its Application In Pharmacokinetic Studies In Healthy Subjects, Zamri Chik

Student Works (2000-2009)

Captopril is a highly specific competitive inhibitor of the angiotensin-convening enzyme (ACE). This enzyme converts angiotensin I, a relatively inactive decapeptide, to angiotensin II , a potent endogenous vasoconstrictor substance. Captopril is widely used for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. This drug, which contains a sulphydryl group binds readily to albumin and to other plasma proteins. Captopril is unstable in blood and plasma ex vivo because of the reactivity of sulphydryl group which results in oxidation and rapid formation of disulphides. Therefore a fixative or a stabiliser must be added to each blood sample immediately following collection. …

Supervised Adaptive Resonance Theory And Rules, Ah-Hwee Tan Jan 2000

Supervised Adaptive Resonance Theory And Rules, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Supervised Adaptive Resonance Theory is a family of neural networks that performs incremental supervised learning of recognition categories (pattern classes) and multidimensional maps of both binary and analog patterns. This chapter highlights that the supervised ART architecture is compatible with IF-THEN rule-based symbolic representation. Specifically, the knowledge learned by a supervised ART system can be readily translated into rules for interpretation. Similarly, a priori domain knowledge in the form of IF-THEN rules can be converted into a supervised ART architecture. Not only does initializing networks with prior knowledge improve predictive accuracy and learning efficiency, the inserted symbolic knowledge can also …

Some Remarks On Fair Exchange Protocol, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Jan 2000

Some Remarks On Fair Exchange Protocol, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Fair exchange turns out to be an increasingly important topic due to the rapid growth of electronic commerce. An exchange is deemed to be fair if at the end of exchange, either each party receives the expected item or neither party receives any useful information about the other’s item. Several protocols for fair exchange have been proposed in recent years. In this paper, we first examine a newly published fair exchange protocol and point out its flaws and weaknesses. We then put forward a more efficient and secure protocol and give an informal analysis.

Clinical Waste Management In The Northern States Of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah And Sarawak, Abdul Hai Akbar Ali

Student Works (2000-2009)

Clinical waste management and disposal methods are quite unique due to their infectious and harmful nature. Unlike municipal waste, clinical waste is pathogenic which jeopardizes the biotic community including human beings, if not quelled of its pathogenic effect.. However, shortcomings or drawbacks are still possible in areas of source separation. inappropriate containment and labeling. Improper incineration may also lead to incomplete combustion ultimately leading to air pollution. Though existing system of clinical waste disposal and management in Malaysia seem adequate, still efficient and cost effective mechanisms are needed. The focus of this research is to survey and study the administrative …

Persistence Framework For Multiple Legacy Databases Of Patient Information Systems, Chin Heong Khor

Student Works (2000-2009)

The use of object-oriented technologies has led to a gap between object-oriented applications and legacy relational databases. A persistence framework can fill this gap by providing services to convert and store objects in relational databases and other forms of storage. A persistent object lasts beyond the execution of the application and can be retrieved at a later time. This project involves the development of an object persistence framework in the Java language to work with different storage mechanisms. while concentrating on transparency and reusability aspects. The persistence framework is made up of reusable and extendable sets of classes that provide …

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

The importance of momentum in compensating for elderly individua ls ' strength deficits to achieve activities of daily living. such as rising from a chair ha.!o been demonstrated in earlier studies. Here we present a case control study of three healthy "non-fallers" and two "frequent fallers," All 5 elders were community-living and were tested in the gai l laboratory. A four-camera Selspot system was used to obtain whole-body momentum from an 11-segment kinematic model. Ground reaction forces and kinematics were used 10 calculate lower extremity join! moments. With the exception of the whole-body's angular momentum about the vertical axis, linear …

Soil Hydraulic Controls Over Nitrogen Oxide Emissions And Nitrogen Cycling In Tropical Agriculture, Antje M. Weitz Jan 2000

Soil Hydraulic Controls Over Nitrogen Oxide Emissions And Nitrogen Cycling In Tropical Agriculture, Antje M. Weitz

Doctoral Dissertations

Soils are the major natural source of nitrous oxide (N2O). Intensive land use increased atmospheric concentrations of this greenhouse gas. Soil microbes produce and consume nitrogen oxides (NO, N2O) during the processes of nitrification (aerobic) and denitrification (anaerobic). Micro-scale variability of controlling factors cause nitrification and denitrification to occur simultaneously in soils, resulting in high spatial variability of nitrogen oxide emissions. Fertilization increases nutrient availability and thus N2O fluxes. Forest soils in the humid tropics account for 20--50% of all N2O sources. Expansion and intensification of tropical agriculture is expected to increase atmospheric N2O concentrations.

We measured N2O fluxes from …

Along The Red Road: Tribally Controlled Colleges And Student Development, Ann Marie Machamer

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

American Indian tnibally controlled colleges were created to provide higher education in a familiar cultural setting to a population that is severely underrepresented in American higher education. Since little is known regarding student development at tribal colleges, the purpose of this study was to assess retention, talent development, satisfaction, racial discrimination, and cultural knowledge/identity at tribal colleges using American Indians who attended non-Indian institutions as a comparison sample. In early 1999, survey data were collected from students who entered fourteen tribal colleges and two Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) colleges and from American Indian students who entered non-Indian. institutions in …

All Or Nothing: Explaining The Size Of Supreme Court Majorities, Paul H. Edelman, Suzanna Sherry Jan 2000

All Or Nothing: Explaining The Size Of Supreme Court Majorities, Paul H. Edelman, Suzanna Sherry

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

In this Article, Professors Edelman and Sherry use a probabilistic model to explore the process of coalition formation on the United States Supreme Court. They identify coalition formation as a Markov process with absorbing states and examine voting patterns from twelve Court Terms. On the basis of their data, they conclude that Justices are reluctant to remain in small minorities. Surprisingly, however, they also find that a three-Justice minority coalition is less likely to suffer defections than a four-Justice minority coalition. This counterintuitive result suggests that while in general it is minority Justices rather than majority Justices who drive the …

Best Practices In Workforce Development: A Chamber Of Commerce Perspective, Patricia Burgess Jan 2000

Best Practices In Workforce Development: A Chamber Of Commerce Perspective, Patricia Burgess

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Changes in the economy--at the local, regional, state, and national levels--as well as technological advances have altered how and where people work, which has brought attention to the issue of workforce development. Many public and private entities, Chambers of Commerce among them, now engage in some form of workforce development. This report examines a number of such efforts to determine the “best practices” of workforce development for Chambers of Commerce. This report first considers the complex world of workforce development. The workforce consists of several distinct sub-populations: existing workers, new entrants, the unemployed, and the underemployed. Each has its own …

Causal Implications Of Viscous Damping In Compressible Fluid Flows, P. M. Jordan, Martin R. Meyer, Ashok Puri Jan 2000

Causal Implications Of Viscous Damping In Compressible Fluid Flows, P. M. Jordan, Martin R. Meyer, Ashok Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

Classically, a compressible, isothermal, viscous fluid is regarded as a mathematical continuum and its motion is governed by the linearized continuity, Navier-Stokes, and state equations. Unfortunately, solutions of this system are of a diffusive nature and hence do not satisfy causality. However, in the case of a half-space of fluid set to motion by a harmonically vibrating plate the classical equation of motion can, under suitable conditions, be approximated by the damped wave equation. Since this equation is hyperbolic, the resulting solutions satisfy causal requirements. In this work the Laplace transform and other analytical and numerical tools are used to …
