The Distributed User Modeling Shell System (Dumss): A Conceptual Framework For Eliciting User Models, Thawatchai Piyawat, Monica Adya, Anthony F. Norcio Jan 2000

The Distributed User Modeling Shell System (Dumss): A Conceptual Framework For Eliciting User Models, Thawatchai Piyawat, Monica Adya, Anthony F. Norcio

Management Faculty Research and Publications

With the advances in communication technology, large volumes of information can transfer across continents within a fraction of a second. Nevertheless, computer users still suffer from unpleasant situations when they interact with systems and are required to adapt to systems rather than the other way round. User modeling aims to overcome this problem by enabling computer systems to interact with users according to the users’ models, i.e., goals, knowledge, and preferences of users. Although, user modeling has shown invaluable benefits, methods of capturing user information to build precise and useful user models are still in their early states. This paper …

Tribes As Rich Nations, Raymond Cross Jan 2000

Tribes As Rich Nations, Raymond Cross

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article critiques the contemporary doctrine of Indian tribal self-determination thirty years after its inception in President Richard M. Nixon's famed 1970 Indian Message to Congress.

The first part focuses on the three most prominent strategies for tribal self-determination: 1) tribal strategy that seeks to "morph" their inherent and reserved sovereign powers into tribal regulatory powers that are effective throughout Indian Country; 2) tribal strategy that seeks to develop and assert economic sovereignty over their lands, resources, and commercial relationships as a means of revitalizing Indian Country; and 3) tribal strategy that seeks to reassert traditional cultural and religious beliefs …

A Comparison Of Accounting Practices Of The United States And Mexico, Kenya Watts Jan 2000

A Comparison Of Accounting Practices Of The United States And Mexico, Kenya Watts

Honors Capstones

With increased globalization the need for more harmonious accounting principles intensifies. Since hope to spend some time working as an accountant in Mexico, he purpose of this project was to acquaint myself with the structure of Mexico's accounting body. I set out to learn and understand the structure ofthe standard-setting body, the certification requirements, the GAAP hierarchy, the conceptual framework and the significant accounting differences. I approached my research using books, the Internet, and periodicals. I was able to locate an abundance of information on Mexico as a whole but accounting related information was more difficult to come by. I …

Mixed Covolume Methods On Rectangular Grids For Elliptic Problems, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak Jan 2000

Mixed Covolume Methods On Rectangular Grids For Elliptic Problems, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider a covolume method for a system of first order PDEs resulting from the mixed formulation of the variable-coefficient-matrix Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition. The system may be used to represent the Darcy law and the mass conservation law in anisotropic porous media flow. The velocity and pressure are approximated by the lowest order Raviart-Thomas space on rectangles. The method was introduced by Russell [Rigorous Block- centered Discretizations on Irregular Grids: Improved Simulation of Complex Reservoir Systems, Reservoir Simulation Research Corporation, Denver, CO, 1995] as a control-volume mixed method and has been extensively tested by Jones [A …

Fages' Theorem And Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler, Esta Erdem, Vladimir Lifschitz Jan 2000

Fages' Theorem And Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler, Esta Erdem, Vladimir Lifschitz

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

We generalize a theorem by François Fages that describes the relationship between the completion semantics and the answer set semantics for logic programs with negotiation as failure. The study of this relationship is important in connection with the emergence of answer set programming. Whenever the two semantics are equivalent, answer sets can be computed by a satisfiability solver, and the use of answer set solvers such as SMODELS and DLV is unnecessary. A logic programming representation of the blocks world due to Ilkka Niemelä is discussed as an example.

Linking Learning & Serving: Teaching Core Content Through Service Learning, Kentucky Department Of Education

Curriculum

Experts agree that students learn best when their learning experience is hands-on, immediate, relevant, and what they are learning is directly tied to an experience with another human being. Service-learning is a teaching strategy that connects a service experience in the community to classroom curriculum. This book highlights ways teachers can engage students in service-learning projects that will both satisfy the core content guidelines and make learning more meaningful for students.

Keep in mind that this document only briefly touches on how to utilize service-learning to meet required core content. While the ideas contained in this document just skim the …

The Lattice Dynamics Of Bcc Titanium, Kemal Çolakoğlu, Yasemi̇n Özteki̇n Çi̇ftçi̇ Jan 2000

The Lattice Dynamics Of Bcc Titanium, Kemal Çolakoğlu, Yasemi̇n Özteki̇n Çi̇ftçi̇

Turkish Journal of Physics

Using in measurements of the phonon frequencies of bcc Titanium, the lattice dynamical calculations are performed on the same phase by using the Third-neighbour Clark-Gazis-Wallis(CGW) model. The theory is used to compute the phonon dispersion curves, the frequency spectra and the lattice spesific heat of the studied phase. The obtained results are compared with the available experimental data.

Modeling The Effect Of Plasticizer On The Viscoelastic Response Of Crosslinked Polymers Using The Tube-Junction Model, P. P. Simon, Harry J. Ploehn Jan 2000

Modeling The Effect Of Plasticizer On The Viscoelastic Response Of Crosslinked Polymers Using The Tube-Junction Model, P. P. Simon, Harry J. Ploehn

Faculty Publications

Plasticizers modify the mechanical properties of polymericmaterials. The effects of plasticizers on glass transition temperatures can be most clearly observed in isochronal temperature sweep profiles of viscoelastic dynamic moduli. However, no simple mathematical models of plasticization are available to those who wish to design and employ plasticized materials in specific applications. We extend a phenomenological, molecular-level model (known as the tube–junction model) for crosslinked polymers to describe the effect of plasticizers on dynamic moduli. We show that the increase in free volume fraction due to the presence of the plasticizer can account for the shift in the glass transition in …

Diffusion Of Water In Nafion 115 Membranes, Sathya Motupally, Aaron J. Becker, John W. Weidner Jan 2000

Diffusion Of Water In Nafion 115 Membranes, Sathya Motupally, Aaron J. Becker, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

In this paper, experimental and simulated data for the diffusion of water across Nafion membranes as a function of the water activity gradient are presented. The gradient in the activity of water across the membrane was varied by changing the flow rate and pressure of nitrogen gas on one side of the membrane. The other side of the membrane was equilibrated with liquid water. It was found that the model predictions are very sensitive to the value of the diffusion coefficient of water in Nafion. Using the Fickian diffusion coefficient extracted from self-diffusion measurements reported in the literature, the model …

A Substorm Onset Observed By The Polar Spacecraft In Conjunction With The Image Chain, P K. Toivanen, D N. Baker, W K. Peterson, A Viljanen, Niescja E. Turner, X Li, C A. Kletzing Jan 2000

A Substorm Onset Observed By The Polar Spacecraft In Conjunction With The Image Chain, P K. Toivanen, D N. Baker, W K. Peterson, A Viljanen, Niescja E. Turner, X Li, C A. Kletzing

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

We present observations of the Polar spacecraft of magnetospheric substorm signatures in the plasma sheet midway along auroral field lines between the ionosphere and the equatorial plasma sheet. An isolated substorm on October 17, 1997, is studied in detail. The onset time at 2040:42 UT was defined to be almost simultaneous (within 20 sec) on the ground and at Polar altitude (~ 4RE. At Polar, the onset was manifested as strong magnetic field variations and plasma flow bursts with amplitudes exceeding 20 nT and 100 km/s, respectively. Bursts of parallel Poynting flux of ~ 0.5 ergs/cm2 …

Evaluation Of The Tail Current Contribution To Dst, Niescja E. Turner, D N. Baker, T I. Pulkkinen, R L. Mcpherron Jan 2000

Evaluation Of The Tail Current Contribution To Dst, Niescja E. Turner, D N. Baker, T I. Pulkkinen, R L. Mcpherron

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

The Dst index is produced using low-latitude ground magnetic field measurements and frequently is used as an estimate of the energy density of the ring current carried mainly by energetic (∼10-200 keV) ions relatively close to the Earth. However, other magnetospheric current systems can cause field perturbations at the Earth's surface: for example, dayside magnetopause currents are known to contribute to the Dst index. It has also been suggested that the nightside tail current sheet can significantly affect the Dst index during high magnetic activity periods when the currents are intense and flow relatively close to the Earth. In this …

Disorder-Induced Desynchronization In A 2x2 Circular Josephson Junction Array, Adam Landsberg Jan 2000

Disorder-Induced Desynchronization In A 2x2 Circular Josephson Junction Array, Adam Landsberg

Physics Faculty Scholarship

Analytical results are presented which characterize the behavior of a dc-biased, two-dimensional circular array of overdamped Josephson junctions subject to increasing levels of disorder. It is shown that high levels of disorder can abruptly destroy the synchronous functioning of the array. We identify the transition boundary between synchronized and desynchronized behavior, along with the mechanism responsible for the loss of frequency locking. Comparisons with recent results for arrays with rectangular lattice geometries are described.

Oif Spaces, Zoltan Balogh, Harold Bennett, Dennis Burke, Gary Gruenhage, David Lutzer, Joe D. Mashburn Jan 2000

Oif Spaces, Zoltan Balogh, Harold Bennett, Dennis Burke, Gary Gruenhage, David Lutzer, Joe D. Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A base β of a space X is called an OIF base when every element of B is a subset of only a finite number of other elements of β. We will explore the fundamental properties of spaces having such bases. In particular, we will show that in T2 spaces, strong OIF bases are the same as uniform bases, and that in T3 spaces where all subspaces have OIF bases, compactness, countable compactness, or local compactness will give metrizability.

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We present new optical (B, V , R, I) and radio (at 14.5, 8.5, and 4.8 GHz) observations of the γ-ray- loud blazar AO 0235+164 obtained during the high state of 1997 December-1998 January. The data were combined with historical light curves from the literature to study correlated optical and radio variations over a time span of more than 20 years. Flux variability with large and energy-dependent amplitude is observed at both wave bands, with the source varying over all timescales sampled (years-months- days), in agreement with previous reports. We have performed a cross-correlation analysis of optical and radio light …

Microhollow Cathode Discharge Excimer Lamps, Karl H. Schoenbach, Ahmed El-Habachi, Mohamed M. Moselhy, Wenhui Shi, Robert H. Stark Jan 2000

Microhollow Cathode Discharge Excimer Lamps, Karl H. Schoenbach, Ahmed El-Habachi, Mohamed M. Moselhy, Wenhui Shi, Robert H. Stark

Bioelectrics Publications

Microhollow cathode discharges are high-pressure, nonequilibrium gas discharges between a hollow cathode and a planar or hollow anode with electrode dimensions in the 100 μm range. The large concentration of high-energy electrons, in combination with the high-gas density favors excimer formation. Excimer emission was observed in xenon and argon, at wavelengths of 128 and 172 nm, respectively, and in argon fluoride and xenon chloride, at 193 and 308 nm. The radiant emittance of the excimer radiation was found to increase monotonically with pressure. However, due to the decrease in source size with pressure, the efficiency (ratio of excimer radiant power …
