Morphological Abnormalities In Illinois Cricket Frogs, Acris Crepitans, 1968-71, Robert H. Gray Jan 2000

Morphological Abnormalities In Illinois Cricket Frogs, Acris Crepitans, 1968-71, Robert H. Gray

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Reports of malformed amphibians have been increasing, including external deformities such as missing or extra arms and legs, missing eyes and mandibles, and internal abnormalities involving the bladder, digestive system, and testes. Natural phenomena such as limb amputations during predation attempts by other animals, parasitism, xenobiotic chemicals (herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers and others), and UV-B or other radiation (either directly or indirectly by triggering production of toxicants from nontoxic chemicals) have all been linked to amphibian abnormalities. From 1968-71, I studied the natural history, effective breeding size, and seasonal, annual, and geographic variation in color morph frequencies of cricket frogs (Acris …

Amphibian Use Of Constructed Ponds On Maryland's Eastern Shore, Catherine E. Merovich, James H. Howard Jan 2000

Amphibian Use Of Constructed Ponds On Maryland's Eastern Shore, Catherine E. Merovich, James H. Howard

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Amphibian assemblages were sampled at nine constructed ponds (three in each age category: new ponds-age <1 yr, young ponds-age 4-5 yr, old ponds-age >30 yr) on Maryland's eastern shore (May-October 1994, March-August 1995) using a total of 27 drift fence and funnel trap arrays. The importance of habitat and landscape variables including pond age was considered in explaining amphibian use and distribution across ponds. Specifically, amphibian (1) abundance; (2) composition; (3) diversity; (4) richness; and (5) reproductive success were studied. During both years, we captured 1904 individuals comprising ten species. The most frequently collected species (species found in all treatments) were Bufo fowleri, Rana sphenocephala utricularius, and Rana …

A Winter/Spring Study Of Salamanders In A Disturbed, Fragmented Habitat Surrounded By Farm Land, James C. Ball Jan 2000

A Winter/Spring Study Of Salamanders In A Disturbed, Fragmented Habitat Surrounded By Farm Land, James C. Ball

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The continued development of fragmented habitats contributes to the decline of amphibians species, and there needs to be a method for evaluating the potential of these habitats to sustain amphibian populations. The effect of fragmented and disturbed habitats among salamander species is difficult to assess because these caudates are difficult to find and enumerate. One approach for estimating the total population of salamanders is to sample them when they migrate to their winter/spring breeding ponds. One fragmented habitat in Southern Michigan was sampled for breeding salamanders during the winter/spring of 1997. Four species of salamanders were detected at this site; …

Amphibians And Reptiles Captured In Drift Fences In Northwest Wisconsin Pine Barrens, James O. Evrard, Steven R. Hoffman Jan 2000

Amphibians And Reptiles Captured In Drift Fences In Northwest Wisconsin Pine Barrens, James O. Evrard, Steven R. Hoffman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Drift fence surveys were initiated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) in the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area (CMWA) in 1993. Systematic drift fence trapping of amphibians and reptiles in the northwest pine barrens was conducted in a 1996- 97 cooperative effort by the WDNR, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC). Drift fences were operated in four managed barrens properties, the CMWA, Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area (NBWA), the Douglas County Wildlife Area (DCWA), and the Moquah Barrens Wildlife Area (MBWA). Eighteen amphibian and reptile species (four salamanders, eight anurans, one …

Frog And Toad Population Monitoring In Michigan, Lori G. Sargent Jan 2000

Frog And Toad Population Monitoring In Michigan, Lori G. Sargent

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A volunteer-based monitoring project for frog and toad populations in Michigan was initiated in 1996. The survey protocols developed by the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program (NAAMP) were used and modified to suit the needs of the Michigan project and because of the highly variable Michigan spring weather. The modifications include route establishment, recommended dates during which surveys are conducted, and a more specific definition of population indices. Development of the project included training workshops for volunteers.

Differences Among The Spatial Distribution Of Sympatric Amphibians, Robert Brodman Jan 2000

Differences Among The Spatial Distribution Of Sympatric Amphibians, Robert Brodman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

To assess amphibian declines, the factors that cause natural fluctuations in population size must be considered (Pechmann et al. 1991). Interspecific competition, predation and pond drying are known to influence patterns of distribution and composition of larval amphibian assemblages (Morin 1983, Brodman 1996, Skelly 1996). While a few studies have quantified amphibian patterns across a large number of ponds, most studies on breeding pond distributions have typically focused on pond characteristics associated with pairs of coexisting species (Thompson and Gates 1982, Skelly 1996). Little has been examined about the differences among the spatial distributions of all potentially interacting amphibian populations …

Variable Structure Control For A Continuous Bioreactor, H.J. Tham, Mohd Azlan Hussain, K.B. Ramachandran Jan 2000

Variable Structure Control For A Continuous Bioreactor, H.J. Tham, Mohd Azlan Hussain, K.B. Ramachandran

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Fermentation is known to be a highly nonlinear process and it requires a nonlinear controller for effective control. This paper studies the application of variable structure control or sliding mode control with direct use of nonlinear model to a continuous baker's yeast production. Lyapunov's theorem is used to ensure asymptotic stability of the system, and also to determine the switching coefficients of the controller. The switching coefficients are calculated and determined during the process. To overcome chattering, the control input derivative is used as an auxiliary variable. The simulation results show smooth response for set point change. For external disturbance …

Judicial Funding And Taxation Mandates: Will Missouri V. Jenkins Survive Under The New Federalism Restraints?, Janice C. Griffith

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The judiciary frequently mandates costly institutional reforms to correct state and local governmental constitutional violations. This Article examines the unprecedented equitable power exercised by a federal district court in its oversight of a school desegregation remedial plan in Kansas City, Missouri at a cost exceeding $1.8 billion. The district court ordered taxation to ensure funding for the remedial plan and directed local authorities to disregard state law limitations that barred such taxation.

Dean Griffith criticizes the judiciary's disregard of remedial plan costs in devising institutional reforms. She proposes that courts apply a balancing test in the remedial process -- weighing …

Electrophilic Aromatic Nitrosation. Isolation And X-Ray Crystallography Of The Metastable No+ Complex With Nitrosoarene, Sergey V. Lindeman, E. Bosch, Jay K. Kochi Jan 2000

Electrophilic Aromatic Nitrosation. Isolation And X-Ray Crystallography Of The Metastable No+ Complex With Nitrosoarene, Sergey V. Lindeman, E. Bosch, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Isolation of the unstable 1∶1 complex of 4-nitrosoanisole with NO+PF6− allows its precise X-ray structural characterization. The charge-transfer crystal is formed via strong N⋯N coordination [the distance of 1.938(5) Å corresponding to a σ-bond order of ≈0.2] in the mean plane of the planar 4-nitrosoanisole donor. Thorough analysis of its molecular geometry in terms of valence resonance and MO schemes reveals a strong charge polarization with a local negative charge localized on the nitroso group and a local positive charge distributed over the adjacent p-methoxybenzyl moiety. Such a charge distribution accommodates the well-known passivation of …

Now I know how the Munchkins felt. Here I have been, toiling in the fields of Evidenceland for some years, laboring along with others to show how use of Bayesian probability theory can assist in the analysis and understanding of evidentiary problems.' In doing so, we have had to wage continuous battle against the Bayesioskeptics-the wicked witches who deny much value, even heuristic value, for probability theory in evidentiary analysis.2 Occasionally, I have longed for law-and-economics scholars to help work this field, which should be fertile ground for them.3 So imagine my delight when the virtual personification of law and …

The Incident Dispatching And Tracking System, Thomas J. Braden Jan 2000

The Incident Dispatching And Tracking System, Thomas J. Braden

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Incident Dispatching and Tracking System (IDTS) was developed to facilitate the technical support of an organization. IDTS provides a means by which a user may submit their issue/problem to the system and receive a unique trouble ticket number. This number can then be used to view the status of that record, minimizing the need for inquiries to the technical support team. IDTS also provides a dispatching function that assigns each trouble ticket to a technician that specializes in that type of issue. Finally, there is a reporting function that allows the technical support team to view the current technical …

Implementations Of Bidirectional Reordering Algorithms, Steven Atkin, Ryan Stansifer Jan 2000

Implementations Of Bidirectional Reordering Algorithms, Steven Atkin, Ryan Stansifer

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Unicode Bidirectional Reference Algorithm. We have provided an alternative reference algorithm written in the functional language Haskell. The advantage of Haskell is it allows for a short, clear description of a complex problem. We have run our algorithm, the two Unicode reference implementations, and four others (ICU, PGBA, FriBidi, JDK 1.2) to test for compliance with the published standard. Conclusions are difficult to reach, but problems were found in the implementations and descriptions and above all with a character-stream to character-stream interpretation of the display of …

"Externalities And Other Parasites." Review Of The Strategic Constitution, By R. D. Cooter, And Constitutional Democracy, By D. C. Mueller, Donald J. Herzog

Reviews

I shall argue that despite the occasional and charmingly belligerent pose struck by some economists of offering a superior alternative to conventional moral and political theory, economics is covertly parasitic on that theory. I begin in Part I by describing some of the core features of economic analysis and by disclosing my own sentiments about that analysis. The description will be terse, the disclosure partial. My aim is to identify, but certainly not pretend to resolve, some thorny methodological issues that surface in these two books. As for the disclosure, well, even if full disclosure were possible, which I doubt, …

Wetland Vegetation Monitoring, 1999/2000 (Salinity Action Plan), R. Gurner, R. Froend, G. Ogden, B. Franke

Research outputs pre 2011

This report represents the vegetation component of a project designed to provide on-going monitoring of wetland salinity and biological resources in wetlands of the agricultural zone of south-west Western Australia. Maintenance of wetland biological diversity in the agricultural zone is one of the major objectives of the Salinity Action Plan. Due to their low position in the landscape, wetlands are the habitat most affected by salinisation.

Female High School Biology Students' Biofilm -Focused Learning: The Contributions Of Three Instructional Strategies To Patterns In Understanding And Motivation., Jo Dale Hill Ales

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This exploratory study examined three instructional strategies used with female high school biology students. The relative contributions of the strategies to student understanding of microbiology and motivation in science were analyzed. The science education community targeted underachievement in science by implementing changes in content and practices (NRC, 1996). Research suggested that teachers facilitate learnirig environments based on human constructivism (Mintzes, Wandersee, & Novak, 1997) that is rooted in meaningful learning theory (Ausubel, Novak & Hanesian, 1978). Teachers were advised to use both visual and verbal instructional strategies (Paivio, 1983) and encourage students to construct understandings by connecting new experiences to …

Development Of Novel Separation Strategies: Part I. The Separation And Characterization Of The Insecticidal Pyrethrin Esters. Part Ii. Separations In Capillary Electrochromatography., Charles William Henry Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The analytical investigation of the natural insecticide pyrethrum has been conducted. In this research, novel approaches were designed to yield either faster, or more complete separation of the active pesticidal esters in pyrethrum extracts as well as more complete conformational information of the structures of these compounds in solution. A combination of techniques was used: micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and capillary electrochromatography (CEC). Using MEKC, an optimized separation of the six pyrethrin esters was achieved in 25 minutes with 25 mM Tris, buffered at pH 9, containing 30 mM SDS, 25% (v/v) acetonitrile, and an …
