Space Science Center

We present an updated version of COMPTEL’s 1.809 MeV sky survey. Based on eight years of observations we compare results from different imaging techniques using background from adjacent energy bands. We confirm the previously reported characteristics of the galactic 1.809 MeV emission, specifically an extended galactic ridge emission, mainly concentrated towards the inner galaxy, a peculiar emission feature in the Cygnus region, and a low-intensity ridge extending towards Carina and Vela. Because this gamma ray line is due to the decay of radioactive 26Al, predominantly synthesized in massive stars, one anticipates flux enhancements aligned with regions of recent star formation. …

Come-Outers And Community Men: Abraham Lincoln And The Idea Of Community In Nineteenth-Century America, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 2000

Come-Outers And Community Men: Abraham Lincoln And The Idea Of Community In Nineteenth-Century America, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

The most eloquent and moving words Abraham Lincoln ever uttered about any community were those "few and simple words" he spoke on the rear platform of the railroad car that lay waiting on the morning of February 11, 1861, to take him to Washington, to the presidency, and ultimately to his death. As his "own breast heaved with emotion" so that "he could scarcely command his feelings sufficiently to commence" (in the description of James C. Conkling), Lincoln declared that "No one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting." To leave Springfield was to …

Detecting Anomalies In Remotely Sensed Hyperspectral Signatures Via Wavelet Transforms, Clifton Dennis Morgan Jan 2000

Detecting Anomalies In Remotely Sensed Hyperspectral Signatures Via Wavelet Transforms, Clifton Dennis Morgan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An automated subpixel target detection system has been designed and tested for use with remotely sensed hyperspectral images. A database of hyperspectral signatures was created to test the system using a variety of Gaussian shaped targets. The signal-to-noise ratio of the targets varied from -95dB to -50dB. The system utilizes a wavelet-based method (discrete wavelet transform) to extract an energy feature vector from each input pixel signature. The dimensionality of the feature vector is reduced to a one-dimensional feature scalar through the process of linear discriminant analysis. Signature classification is determined by nearest mean criterion that is used to assign …

Hormone Replacement Therapy, Or Just Eat More Meat: The Technological Hare Vs. The Regulatory Tortoise, Leticia M. Diaz

Faculty Scholarship

Is meat with its high fat content the real culprit, or is it the FDA-approved growth hormones, the same hormones that have been rejected in Europe, that should bear the blame? Why is eating less meat associated with a lower incidence of many types of cancer? Could it be chemical overload? American women are about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than are women in less developed countries.

East Africa Institute

Lake Victoria is of immense economic and environmental importance in the eastern and central African region. The lake is the largest freshwater body in the tropics and its basin supports one of the densest and poorest rural populations in the world. About 21 million people rely primarily on subsistence agricultural and pastoral production for their livelihoods. But pervasive poverty has hindered sustainable use of the land resources and there has already been considerable land degradation. There is little doubt that sedimentation and nutrient run-off, urban and industrial point source pollution and biomass burning, have induced the rapid eutrophication of Lake …

Acth4 -10, Substance P, And Dizolcipine (Mk-801) Accelerate Functional Recovery After Hemilabyrinthectomy In Goldfish, Rosana Mattioli, Joseph P. Huston, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

In this study, we evaluated the goldfish model of hemilabyrinthectomy for investigating potential recovery-promoting drugs. In this lesion model, the unilateral removal of the labyrinth induces a postural imbalance in response to light (Dorsal Light Reflex), from which the animals can recover over time. The behavioral effects of two neuropeptides were tested–namely, of substance P and ACTH4-10, both of which are known to promote functional recovery in several other lesion models. Furthermore, the effect of MK- 801, an antagonist of the glutamatergic NMDAreceptor subtype, was tested because this substance has also been shown to exert a neuroprotective effect. After lesion …

Legislation By Assembly, Jeremy Waldron Jan 2000

Legislation By Assembly, Jeremy Waldron

Faculty Articles

Political scientists often remind us that real legislative power is vested in a much smaller number of people than the full membership of Parliament or the full membership of Congress. They emphasize the power of the executive in Westminster-style systems, under which the parliament very seldom fails to enact any bill proposed by the executive and very seldom enacts any bill not proposed by the executive. Or, in American legislatures, political scientists point to the power of committees as the effective legislative power. This might suggest' that the disparity of numbers to which I have called your attention is more …

Facies Analysis And Sequence Stratigraphy Of Crp-2/2a, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, Christopher R. Fielding, T R. Naish, K J. Woolfe, M A. Lavelle Jan 2000

Facies Analysis And Sequence Stratigraphy Of Crp-2/2a, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, Christopher R. Fielding, T R. Naish, K J. Woolfe, M A. Lavelle

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Oligocene to Quaternary succession encountered in CRP-2/2A is divided into twelve recurrent lithofacies (some of which have been subdivided further), reflecting a range of marine, glacimarine and possibly subglacial environments of sediment accumulation. A cyclical vertical arrangement of lithofacies was noted throughout the core, and is used as the basis for a sequence stratigraphic analysis. Twenty-four sequences are recognised, each of which begins with a Sequence Boundary (Glacial Surface of Erosion), and each is interpreted to record a cycle of glacial advance and retreat with associated changes in relative sea-level. During at least some of these cycles, ice is …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The 624.15 m glaciomarine sedimentary succession recovered in the CRP-2/2A drillcore comprises lower Oligocene (< c. 31 Ma) to lower Miocene (18.5 Ma) strata that are overlain by a thin succession of Pliocene and Pleistocene strata. The age model for the CRP-2/2A drillhole, as presented in this paper, is based on combined microfossil biostratigraphy, 40Ar/39Ar ages on volcanic material, 87Sr/86Sr analyses on mollusc shells, and correlation of a magnetic polarity zonation to the magnetic polarity time scale (MPTS). Between 25.92 and 109.05 metres below sea floor (mbsf), several alternative correlations to the MPTS are possible, all of which suggest that sediment accumulation rates averaged ~180 m/m.y. between unconformities, although actual sedimentation rates may have been higher. Between 109.05 and 306.65 mbsf, the age model is straightforward and average sedimentation rates were much higher …

Model Study Of Ionospheric Dynamics During A Substorm, Lie Zhu, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka, Michael David Jan 2000

Model Study Of Ionospheric Dynamics During A Substorm, Lie Zhu, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka, Michael David

All Physics Faculty Publications

A global substorm electrodynamic model and a global ionospheric model were coupled in order to study ionospheric dynamics during substorms, with the focus on small-scale substorm electrodynamic and plasma structures. The simulation results show that in the expansion phase, structured precipitation and channeled field-aligned currents quickly develop in the substorm onset region. The Hall and Pedersen conductance ratio in the region increases significantly, and the magnetospheric field-aligned currents are mainly closed by highly structured Hall currents. Correspondingly, the plasma in the ionosphere also undergoes significant changes during a substorm and is highly structured in both the horizontal and vertical directions. …

Sensitivity Curves For Spaceborne Gravitational Wave Interferometers, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock, Ronald W. Hellings Jan 2000

Sensitivity Curves For Spaceborne Gravitational Wave Interferometers, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock, Ronald W. Hellings

All Physics Faculty Publications

To determine whether particular sources of gravitational radiation will be detectable by a specific gravitational wave detector, it is necessary to know the sensitivity limits of the instrument. These instrumental sensitivities are often depicted (after averaging over source position and polarization) by graphing the minimal values of the gravitational wave amplitude detectable by the instrument versus the frequency of the gravitational wave. This paper describes in detail how to compute such a sensitivity curve given a set of specifications for a spaceborne laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory. Minor errors in the prior literature are corrected, and the first (mostly) analytic …

Structure-Function Studies On Human Epithelial Cystic Fibrosis Chloride Channels Expressed In Xenopus Laevis Oocytes, Laszlo Csanady Jan 2000

Structure-Function Studies On Human Epithelial Cystic Fibrosis Chloride Channels Expressed In Xenopus Laevis Oocytes, Laszlo Csanady

Student Theses and Dissertations

The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) Cl- channel is an ATP-binding cassette protein, comprising two transmembrane domains, two nucleotide binding domains (NBD1, NBD2) and a regulatory (R) domain. Channel gating is controlled by R-domain phosphorylation and by ATP binding and/or hydroysis at the NBDs. Exon 13 of the CFTR gene encodes residues 590 to 830, originally ascribed to the R domain. Here, CFTR channels were severed near likely N- or C-terminal boundaries of NBD1 or the R domain. Channel activity, assayed via two-microelectrode voltage clamp monitored successful assembly of pairs of channel segments as the sever point was …

A Niche For Adult Neurogenesis: Analysis Of Bmp Signaling And Transcriptional Profiles Of Adult Subventricular Zone Cells, Daniel A. Lim Jan 2000

A Niche For Adult Neurogenesis: Analysis Of Bmp Signaling And Transcriptional Profiles Of Adult Subventricular Zone Cells, Daniel A. Lim

Student Theses and Dissertations

Neurogenesis persists in restricted regions of the adult vertebrate brain. The largest region of adult neurogenesis is the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle wall. Neural stem cells reside in the SVZ. The SVZ cell types and molecular signals necessary for this neurogenic niche were poorly understood. Here, I first demonstrate that astrocyte-like cells in the SVZ (type B cells) can self-renew and differentiate into mature brain cells. This data contributed to the identification of type B cells as the SVZ stem cell. In vivo, all SVZ cell types are in direct contact with type B cells. By reconstituting …

Assessing The Impact Of Sustained Professional Development On Middle School Mathematics Teachers, Joanne E. Goodell, Lesley H. Parker, Jane Butler Kahle

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

The study reported in this paper examines the impact of the Ohio Statewide Systemic Initiative (SSI) on participating mathematics teachers. Quantitative data from 90 SSI-trained teachers and 400 teachers without training, along with qualitative data collected from seven SSI teachers who were visited in their classrooms are presented. Analysis of the quantitative data showed that SSI and Non-SSI teachers reported significantly different frequencies of reformed teaching practices and held significantly different views about the nature and pedagogy of mathematics. Qualitative data from the interviews highlighted that the SSI professional development experience, the ability to find creative ways to overcome lack …

Why A Fundamental Right To A Quality Education Is Not Enough, James G. Wilson Jan 2000

Why A Fundamental Right To A Quality Education Is Not Enough, James G. Wilson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article relies upon the political and economic analysis of such great thinkers as Aristotle and Rousseau to understand and normatively evaluate constitutional caselaw in general and education cases in particular. The article's title contains its conclusion: a judicially created right to a quality education is a laudable, but possibly counterproductive and definitely insufficient condition, for creating a humane constitutional system. The rest of society needs to do far more to protect the average citizen and worker from the ever-ravenous ruling class. All the edification in the world will not mean much if there are only a few decent jobs …

Does The Death Tax Deserve The Death Penalty - An Overview Of The Major Arguments For Repeal Of Federal Wealth-Transfer Taxes , Richard Schmalbeck Jan 2000

Does The Death Tax Deserve The Death Penalty - An Overview Of The Major Arguments For Repeal Of Federal Wealth-Transfer Taxes , Richard Schmalbeck

Cleveland State Law Review

President Bush campaigned on a platform calling for repeal of the federal estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer taxes, and, within his first month in office, introduced a bill that would accomplish that result. Whether or not these taxes are repealed this year, however, the debate over them will not immediately end. In the spirit of that on-going debate, I offer this essay considering the major arguments that have been made by advocates of repeal. Although I will focus mostly on those arguments in opposition to the existing system, I will begin with a brief description of the federal wealth transfer …

Principal Components Inverse: Comparisons And Applications For Rapidly Adaptive Detection, Brian Edward Freburger Jan 2000

Principal Components Inverse: Comparisons And Applications For Rapidly Adaptive Detection, Brian Edward Freburger

Open Access Dissertations

The method of Principal Components Inverse (PCI) has been used by many researchers to address the need for rapid adaptation. More recently, variations on the idea of rank reduction have appeared in the literature. This thesis compares PCI to some of these more recent methods and applies PCI to current problems of interest in signal detection. A comparison is made between applying the PCI method in element space or first transforming to beamspace and utilizing the Generalized Sidelobe Canceler (GSLC) structure for rank reduction. When the interference to be suppressed is only in the sidelobes of the mainbeam, the two …

Evolutionary Statutory Interpretation: Mr. Justice Scalia Meets Darwin, Jeffrey G. Miller Jan 2000

Evolutionary Statutory Interpretation: Mr. Justice Scalia Meets Darwin, Jeffrey G. Miller

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This paper examines the seeming contrast between the legal doctrines that the interpretation of statutes can evolve over time and that the interpretation of statutes must be grounded only in their texts, which never change unless amended by Congress. That examination is illuminated by complexity and meme theories. The examination is concluded by applying both doctrines and theories to the question of whether the term “navigable water” in a water pollution control statute includes underground water.

Land Monitor Plays Important Role In Salinity Battle, Brian Beetson Jan 2000

Land Monitor Plays Important Role In Salinity Battle, Brian Beetson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

As Machiavelli observed in the 16th century, Knowledge is power, and few have disputed this since. So it is not surprising that in the battle against salinity, considerable resources are being used to understand the extent of the problem and its spread. Brian Beetson reports on one of the initiatives undertaken to expand these resources - the Land Monitor project.
