Annual Report 1999-2000, Imsa Fund Jan 2000

Annual Report 1999-2000, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

Throughout its history the IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education Board of Directors has worked hard to connect the vision, talents and ideas of the private sector with those in education to produce meaningful and measurable results. Through this work, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and its partners have created a laboratory for learning and teaching mathematics and science in Illinois that is second to none.

The strategic direction of the IMSA Fund is always guided by the Academy's commitment that all students in Illinois benefit from IMSA's programs. IMSA serves students and mathematics and science teachers throughout Illinois …

The Chicago Counter-Revolution And The Sociology Of Economic Knowledge, Robert Leeson Jan 2000

The Chicago Counter-Revolution And The Sociology Of Economic Knowledge, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

This chapter is concerned with the internal phenomenon. One model that can be invoked to explain this internal phenomenon is the classical process whereby evidence is patiently accumulated until the weight of the argument favours one side or another. Alternatively, Stigler's 'model' of the sociology of economic knowledge construction and destruction can be used to examine the internal opinion-changing process in the "transition from the overwhelming defeat of Barry Goldwater in 1964 to the overwhelming victory of Ronald Reagan in 1980 - two men with essentially the same programme and the same message" (Friedman and Friedman 1982, viii).

Friedman And The Walrasian Equations Of The Natural-Rate Counter-Revolution, Robert Leeson Jan 2000

Friedman And The Walrasian Equations Of The Natural-Rate Counter-Revolution, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

From the 1930s, economic controversy has been a tale of three cities (Chicago and the two Cambridges) and three General Theories. In the 1930s, there were, in addition to the General Theory of Employment (Keynesian Macroeconomics), two other revolutionary attempts to don the mantle of generality: the General Theory of Method (the formalist revolution, involving structural econometrics and Walrasian general equilibrium) and the General Theory of Value (organised around the concept of monopolistic, or imperfect, competition). The Keynesian and formalist general revolutions became symbiotic and dominated the post-war landscape of economists. In contrast, the monopolistic competition revolution did not readily …

Applying Machine Learning Algorithms To Othello, Kristopher Glesener Jan 2000

Applying Machine Learning Algorithms To Othello, Kristopher Glesener

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The goal of this project was to apply unsupervised machine learning algorithms to the board game othello. We used eight genetic algorithms to develop eight different othello strategies. Each genetic algorithm played 2.5 million games to develop one of the eight strategies. Each strategy was then tested against the other seven strategies, as well as other computer players and human players. The results show that most of the strategies play at the level of a beginning player, with the best strategies on par with a slightly experienced player. We also implemented a reinforcement learning algorithm in order to improve on …

Teaching Mathematical Discourse Through Characters And Scripts, Marcia Dejesús-Rueff Jan 2000

Teaching Mathematical Discourse Through Characters And Scripts, Marcia Dejesús-Rueff

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

The research project conducted for this thesis determined whether the use of characters and scripts would help teach middle school students good mathematical discourse skills. It was conducted in a suburban eighth grade remedial mathematics classroom for three days during the month of March 2000. The four social aspects of good mathematical discourse formed the basis for the scripts; the topics included dedication to the group, helping each other understand, active listening, and not giving in to authority. Data included information from audiotapes of small group discussions, videotapes ofthe entire class, student journal writings, lesson plans, and teacher notes. The …

The Benefits And Demands Of Journal Writing In A Mathematics Classroom, Casey E. Vaccaro Jan 2000

The Benefits And Demands Of Journal Writing In A Mathematics Classroom, Casey E. Vaccaro

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

While mathematics teachers believe that student journal writing is beneficial, however, not many have tried to implement writing in their classrooms. I began a project that places journal writing at the center of my Course II class. The main purpose of my project was to see how daily journal writings affected the teacher's practice and to assess its benefits and demands. Even before beginning the project, I had anticipated that time was going to be a factor, which it was. What I had not anticipated was the extent to which good mathematical discourse must be modeled in order to establish …

Modeling Metacognitive Strategies For Student Adoption Within A Problem-Based Learning Unit, Lynn E. Panton Jan 2000

Modeling Metacognitive Strategies For Student Adoption Within A Problem-Based Learning Unit, Lynn E. Panton

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Much has been written about problem-based learning and its ability to promote metacognition and self-directed learning. (Sage and Torp, 1998) This study was designed to determine if teacher modeling of metacognitive strategies, within a problem-based learning unit, would help students become independent, reflective thinkers. Metacognitive strategies modeled were the need-to-know-board, mind mapping, and reflective writing in daily problem logs. The study was conducted in a seventh grade science classroom over a one-month period. Students were enrolled in the district's Major Achievement Program. Data collection included responses from daily problem logs and a summative reflective essay. Additional data was collected from …

Shadows Of Fuzzy Sets - A Natural Approach Towards Describing 2-D And Multi-D Fuzzy Uncertainty In Linguistic Terms, Hung T. Nguyen, Berlin Wu, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2000

Shadows Of Fuzzy Sets - A Natural Approach Towards Describing 2-D And Multi-D Fuzzy Uncertainty In Linguistic Terms, Hung T. Nguyen, Berlin Wu, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy information processing systems start with expert knowledge which is usually formulated in terms of words from natural language. This knowledge is then usually reformulated in computer-friendly terms of membership functions, and the system transform these input membership functions into the membership functions which describe the result of fuzzy data processing. It is then desirable to translate this fuzzy information back from the computer-friendly membership functions language to the human-friendly natural language. In general, this is difficult even in a 1-D case, when we are interested in a single quantity y; however, the fuzzy research community has accumulated some expertise …

Of Black Holes And Decentralized Law Making In Cyberspace, David G. Post Jan 2000

Of Black Holes And Decentralized Law Making In Cyberspace, David G. Post

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

MAPS, the primary focus of this tale, is a California non-profit limited liability company. It coordinates a kind of group boycott by Internet service providers (ISPs) for the purpose of reducing the flow of what is commonly called "spam"- unsolicited bulk e-mail. It operates, roughly, as follows. The managers of MAPS create and maintain what they call the "Realtime Blackhole List" (RBL), which consists of a long list of Internet addresses. They place on the RBL any Internet address from which, to their knowledge, spam has originated. They also place on the RBL the address of any network that allows …

Part 2: The State Of Education, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

(First Paragraph) Few things are more important to adults in Hampton Roads than the quality of their K-12 schools. These schools, and the students within their classrooms, represent the fondest hopes of this generation for a prosperous future. Many citizens and parents are willing to expend countless hours helping to maintain the quality of their schools and, to the extent they are able, make them even better. Pity the political leader who comes to be viewed as "anti-education." From the latest related statewide initiatives to more localized concerns, K-12 schools are always a focal point of the news in Hampton …

1. A Process-Oriented Model Of Metacognition: Links Between Motivation And Executive Functioning, John G. Borkowski, Lorna K. S. Chan, Nithi Muthukrishna Jan 2000

1. A Process-Oriented Model Of Metacognition: Links Between Motivation And Executive Functioning, John G. Borkowski, Lorna K. S. Chan, Nithi Muthukrishna

Issues in the Measurement of Metacognition

The measurement of metacognition has gone through four overlapping phases: The first phase began with the insightful and stimulating paper of Kreutzer, Leonard, and Flavell (1975) on introspective reports about memory states and processes, followed by an important theoretical chapter on the nature of metamemory (Flavell & Wellman,1977). These early contributions documented, and theoretically clarified, the fact that children could accurately report their knowledge about memory events as they related to a variety of tasks, circumstances, and strategies; furthermore, memory knowledge was shown to be age-related. A second phase quickly followed: The intention here was to show interconnections between memory …

Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan Jan 2000

Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan

Doctoral Dissertations

Performance improvement in computerized Electrocardiogram (ECG) classification is vital to improve reliability in this life-saving technology. The non-linearly overlapping nature of the ECG classification task prevents the statistical and the syntactic procedures from reaching the maximum performance. A new approach, a neural network-based classification scheme, has been implemented in clinical ECG problems with much success. The focus, however, has been on narrow clinical problem domains and the implementations lacked engineering precision. An optimal utilization of frequency information was missing. This dissertation attempts to improve the accuracy of neural network-based single-lead (lead-II) ECG beat and rhythm classification. A bottom-up approach defined …

Investigation Of The First Snapover Of Positively Biased Conductors In A Plasma, C. D. Thomson, John R. Dennison, R. E. Davies, D. C. Ferguson, J. T. Galafaro, B. V. Vayner

All Physics Faculty Publications

We describe a systematic experimental investigation of the phenomenon termed "snapover." In snapover, the current collected by a positively biased conductor, surrounded by a dielectric and immersed in a plasma, increases dramatically when the conductor potential is raised above some threshold value. The phenomenon is particularly relevant to the case of high-voltage solar arrays in Earth orbit. Our experiments examined the importance of conducting material, insulating material, size and shape of the conductor, sample history, biasing rate, and condition of the dielectric surface (contamination and smoothness) to the onset potential and current jump. In addition to a primary snapover occurring …

Using Binary Star Observations To Bound The Mass Of The Graviton, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock Jan 2000

Using Binary Star Observations To Bound The Mass Of The Graviton, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock

All Physics Faculty Publications

Interacting white dwarf binary star systems, including helium cataclysmic variable (HeCV) systems, are expected to be strong sources of gravitational radiation, and should be detectable by proposed space-based laser interferometer gravitational wave observatories such as LISA. Several HeCV star systems are presently known and can be studied optically, which will allow electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations to be correlated. Comparisons of the phases of a gravitational wave signal and the orbital light curve from an interacting binary white dwarf star system can be used to bound the mass of the graviton. Observations of typical HeCV systems by LISA could potentially …

Super-Brownian Limits Of Voter Model Clusters, Maury Bramzon, J. Theodore Cox, Jean-Francois Le Gall Jan 2000

Super-Brownian Limits Of Voter Model Clusters, Maury Bramzon, J. Theodore Cox, Jean-Francois Le Gall

Mathematics - All Scholarship

The voter model is one of the standard interacting particle systems. Two related problems for this process are to analyze its behavior, after large times t, for the sets of sites (a) sharing the same opinion as the site 0, and (b) having the opinion that was originally at 0. Results on the sizes of these sets were given in [Sa79] and [BG80]. Here, we investigate the spatial structure of these sets in d ≥ 2, which we show converge to quantities associated with super-Brownian motion, after suitable normalization. The main theorem from [CDP98] serves as an important tool for …

A Pairwise Key Pre-Distribution Scheme For Wireless Sensor Networks, Wenliang Kevin Du, Jing Deng, Yunghsiang S. Han, Pramod K. Varshney Jan 2000

A Pairwise Key Pre-Distribution Scheme For Wireless Sensor Networks, Wenliang Kevin Du, Jing Deng, Yunghsiang S. Han, Pramod K. Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

This paper, we provide a framework in which to study the security of key pre-distribution schemes, propose a new key pre-distribution scheme which substantially improves the resilience of the network compared to previous schemes, and give an in-depth analysis of our scheme in terms of network resilience and associated overhead. Our scheme exhibits a nice threshold property: when the number of compromised nodes is less than the threshold, the probability that communications between any additional nodes are compromised is close to zero. This desirable property lowers the initial payoff of smaller-scale network breaches to an adversary, and makes it necessary …
