Dynamic Environmental Policy In Developing Countries In The Presence Of A Balance Of Trade Deficit And A Tariff, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi, Dug Man Lee Jan 2000

Dynamic Environmental Policy In Developing Countries In The Presence Of A Balance Of Trade Deficit And A Tariff, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Hamid Beladi, Dug Man Lee

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We first review the literature pertaining to the protection of the modem sector in developing countries (DCs). We then discuss the nexuses between protection, economic dualism, and optimal environmental policy in DCs. Next, in the theoretical part of the paper, we construct a dynamic model of the environmental policy formulation process in a stylized DC in which there is a balance of trade deficit, and a tariff that protects the modem-also the import competing and the polluting-sector. The employment and output effects of three different pollution taxes are analyzed. These taxes incorporate different assumptions about the DC government's ability to …

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

The GTECH project, funded through a grant from the GTE Foundation, prepared school teams of science, mathematics and technology teachers and an administrator to set goals for their local schools regarding implementation of electronic technology and integration of content across curricular areas. A variety of teacher-centered staff development strategies were used to enable participants to achieve local school objectives, model and encourage active learning environments involving technology, develop integrated curriculum and provide training to their peers. GTECH staff provided workshops and summer institutes based on teacher feedback and classroom observations. Data from the Stages of Concerns Questionnaire assisted the staff …

Communities Of Practice: A Framework For Fostering Coherence In Virtual Learning Communities, Jim Rogers Jan 2000

Communities Of Practice: A Framework For Fostering Coherence In Virtual Learning Communities, Jim Rogers

English Faculty Publications

This paper presents a case study of an on-line workshop that was conducted via the WWW. Using the participant dialogues from the workshop bulletin boards, the author investigates whether Wenger’s (1998) Community of Practice framework can be applied to this educational setting. The results indicate that participants interactions in the workshop demonstrated the characteristics of mutual engagement, joint enterprise, and shared repertoire. These three characteristics are what Wenger posits contribute to a cohesive community of practice. Using this framework, some principles are derived that educators can use to design more cohesive learning communities.

Final Environmental Impact Statement For The Horse Creek Coal Lease Application (Federal Coal Lease Application Wyw141435), United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

Final Environmental Impact Statements (WY)

This Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) assesses the environmental consequences of a federal decision to offer a federal coal tract located in southeastern Campbell County and northeastern Converse County, Wyoming for lease at a competitive, sealed bid sale, subject to standard and special lease stipulations. The Horse Creek Lease By Application (LBA) Tract as applied for by Antelope Coal Company includes approximately 2,840 acres containing approximately 356.5 million tons of federal coal. Antelope Coal Company operates the adjacent Antelope Mine and proposes to mine the Horse Creek LBA Tract as a maintenance tract for the existing mine, if a lease …

Contemporary Research In Ecological Economics: Five Outstanding Issues, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

Contemporary Research In Ecological Economics: Five Outstanding Issues, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In recent times, ecologists and economists have drawn attention to the fact ecological and economic systems are jointly determined. Once this is recognized, it seems rather obvious that ecological-economic systems ought to be studied as one system. However, because this recognition has been very recent, a number of important issues in ecological economics remain poorly understood. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss five of these outstanding issues.

Valuation And Asset Pricing In Infinite-Horizon Sequential Markets With Portfolio Constraints, Kevin X.D. Huang Jan 2000

Valuation And Asset Pricing In Infinite-Horizon Sequential Markets With Portfolio Constraints, Kevin X.D. Huang

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We develop a theory of valuation of payoff streams in infinite-horizon sequential markets and discuss implications of this theory for equilibrium under various portfolio constraints. We study the nature of asset price bubbles in light of this theory. We show that there cannot be equilibrium price bubbles on asset in positive net supply under a transversality restriction. Our analysis extends the work by Huang and Werner [9] to stochastic settings with complete or incomplete markets.

The Economics Of Cattle Supply, David Aadland Jan 2000

The Economics Of Cattle Supply, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds a dynamic rational expectations model describing the supply of cattle. The theoretical model inlproves on existing models by allowing cow-calf operators to make period-by-period investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, separates the markets for fed and unfed beef, and considers a rich set of exogenous shocks. The model is calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that replicates several empirical regularities associated with the cattle cycle.

A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation Of The Supply Response In The U.S. Beef-Cattle Industry, David Aadland, Deevon Bailey, Shelly Feng Jan 2000

A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation Of The Supply Response In The U.S. Beef-Cattle Industry, David Aadland, Deevon Bailey, Shelly Feng

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper investigates the response of beef cattle producers to changes in the price of cattle. Previous research has suggested that there may be a negative short-run supply response to a permanent increase in the price of cattle. We build a dynamic, rational expectations model that predicts that the supply response is generally positive, even for permanent shocks in the short run, and nests the negative supply response as a special case for appropriately restricted demand shocks. Using annual U.S. time-series data (1930-1997) and a simultaneous-equations econometric approach, we find a positive short-run supply response in the cow market and …

An Interdisciplinary Research Agenda For The Study Of Ecological-Economic Systems In The American West, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

An Interdisciplinary Research Agenda For The Study Of Ecological-Economic Systems In The American West, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Increased public awareness of resource management issues and new attitudes toward resource conservation have led to great interest in the subject of the apposite use and management of natural and environmental resources in the American west. This paper analyzes this subject from an interdisciplinary ecological-economic perspective. The paper first identifies and then discusses four salient issues concerning the study of the west's ecological-economic systems that remain inadequately understood. Next, the paper proposes a research agenda that will enable us to shed light on some key questions concerning the functioning, health, and management of the west's ecological-economic systems.

Habitat Conversion, Information Acquisition, And The Conservation Of Biodiversity, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2000

Habitat Conversion, Information Acquisition, And The Conservation Of Biodiversity, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We analyze two questions c.onceming the conservation of biodiversity in a dynamic and stochastic framework. First, given the link between natural habitats and biodiversity, when should a social planner stop the habitat conversion process? Second, what is the nexus between a social planner's optimal conservation policy (OCP) and the length of this individual's planning horizon? We obtain the following two results. First, the OCP calls for the social planner to wait a while, i.e., not act upon receipt of the first (lie) fraction of all utility packets. The social planner should then stop the habitat conversion process upon receipt of …

Electronic Properties Of Small Neutral And Charged Beryllium Clusters, Andrew M. Kolchin, Randall W. Hall Jan 2000

Electronic Properties Of Small Neutral And Charged Beryllium Clusters, Andrew M. Kolchin, Randall W. Hall

Collected Faculty Scholarship

We determine the atomic and electronic structures for neutral and singly positively chargedberyllium clusters containing from two to six atoms using density functional theory in the local spin density approximation. Ions are moved with a steepest descent method and the electronic wave functions optimized using a fictitious dynamics with simulated annealing, as conceived by Car and Parrinello [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 2471 (1985)]. Shell-like orbitals, filling angular momentum states in the order: 1s 1p 2s 1d are obtained. We employ a Mulliken population analysis using an atomic basis to examine how the shell orbitals arise from atomic orbitals. This analysis …

School-Based Feeding Programs In Canada And Other Highly Developed Countries, Carol J. Henry Jan 2000

School-Based Feeding Programs In Canada And Other Highly Developed Countries, Carol J. Henry

Digitized Theses

Why should school-based feeding programs be less prevalent in Canada than in some other comparable countries? As educators, parents, and citizens, we would be disturbed if schools were to choose to omit Canadian history, English, or mathematics from their courses of study. Yet is not access to an adequate meal, especially at mid-day, an equally fundamental expectation? The main purpose of this thesis was to draft plausible explanations for the lack of well-developed school-based feeding programs in Canada. This goal was accomplished by investigating the development and operation of school- based feeding programs in selected countries and then comparing conditions …
