[Accepted Version] Empowering Families In Hands‐On Science Programs, James Shymansky, Larry Yore, Brian Hand

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

This paper presents the results of the Science Parent, Activities, and Literature (Science PALs) project. This project aims to promote parent involvement in children's hands-on science education by using take-home, literature-based inquiry, problem solving, and design activities that connect school and home. Parents are the most effective source of positive or negative attitude influences toward science and mathematics. The lack of science in home environments depends largely upon parents' fear or lack of success in science. The Science PALs project uses parents as a key instructional factor and involves them in their children's education. Teachers help parents in this involvement …

Due to the large volume of comments, comments and responses in this section occur in several forms. Where a "summary comment" is indicated, it is a paraphrasing of many individual comments having the same basic context. A "summary response" therefore responds to all who commented in like fashion. Where a "comment" is indicated, normally this is a singular comment in the words of the person who commented. The "response" directed toward that individual comment. In some instances, a general response is given to a series of individual comments.

On The Use Of The Method Of Images To Investigate Nearshore Dynamical Processes, S. A. Thorpe, L. R. Centurioni Jan 2000

On The Use Of The Method Of Images To Investigate Nearshore Dynamical Processes, S. A. Thorpe, L. R. Centurioni

Journal of Marine Research

This note describes how the method of images may be used to determine the motion and evolution of two related kinds of phenomena within a wedge of inviscid fluid. The image field of a curved vortex within a wedge with vortex lines lying along sectors of circles around the apex of the wedge is that segment of a complete vortex ring which remains outside the wedge and of which the curved vortex forms a part. The image system can be used to describe the motion, interaction and stability of single or multiple vortices within the wedge. Axisymmetric jets form the …

The Parameterization Of Baroclinic Instability In A Simple Model, A. Wirth Jan 2000

The Parameterization Of Baroclinic Instability In A Simple Model, A. Wirth

Journal of Marine Research

Baroclinic instability of zonally forced flow in a two mode quasi-geostrophic numerical model with periodic boundary conditions is considered. Only the largest scale of the baroclinic mode is forced and the scale dependence of a diffusive parameterization of baroclinic layer thickness is determined. It is shown that the effect of baroclinic instability is a decreasing function of scale with an exponent of about half of that corresponding to the commonly used Laplace operator. We furthermore show that there is no linear relation between the time averaged amplitude of the large scale streamfunction (or quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity) and the bolus velocity.

Success And Growth Of Corals Transplanted To Cement Armor Mat Tiles In Southeast Florida: Implications For Reef Restoration, S. L. Thornton, Richard E. Dodge, David S. Gilliam, R. Devictor, P. Cooke

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

In 1997, 271 scleractinian corals growing on a sewer outfall pipe were used in a transplantation study offshore from North Dade County, Florida, USA. Corals were removed from the outfall pipe and transplanted onto concrete armor mat tiles used to cover the pipe. Success (number of corals still attached and alive), mortality (number of dead corals), and growth rates of the transplants were assessed between December 1997 and December 1999. Colony surface area and radius length were measured on scanned photographs to estimate horizontal growth rate. After two years post-transplantation, success rate and overall mortality were 87% and 7.8% respectively. …

Reefs And Coral Carpets In The Miocene Paratethys (Badenian, Leitha Limestone, Austria), Bernhard Riegl, W. E. Piller

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Biohermal (reefs) and biostromal (coral carpets) facies were studied in the Austrian Middle Miocene Leitha Limestone. In the Vienna Basin ("Fenk quarry") non-framebuilding and framebuilding biostromal coral communities were found. In the Styrian Basin, well developed patch reefs were observed besides coral carpets. In the Fenk quarry, 2 coral carpet types, four non-framework coral communities, and one bivalve/coral community were found. In "Retznei quarry" (Styrian Basin) patch reefs, basal corallinacean calcarenites were followed by a Ponies layer capped by marl, and the main reef-building higher diversity phase dominated by faviids ( Montastraea, Tarbellastraea). In the "Tittenbacher quarry" no internal …

Toward An Architecture Of Privacy For The Virtual World, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 151 (2000), Paul Toscano

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The internet is expanding. As users become more computer literate, the world becomes more reliant on the virtual one. The internet and wireless communications have fostered global commerce on an unprecedented scale. Because it lacks boundaries, cyberspace is difficult for regulate with traditional methods of governance. Security, privacy, and integrity of information are thus available to only a minority of users in restricted communities. Outside, users are on their own or must rely on the partial solutions available to them. To date, there is no consensus on what security, privacy, and integrity of information really mean. The internet needs a …

Skeletal Architecture And Density Banding In Diploria Strigosa By X-Ray Computed Tomography, Kevin P. Helmle, Richard E. Dodge, R. A. Ketcham Jan 2000

Skeletal Architecture And Density Banding In Diploria Strigosa By X-Ray Computed Tomography, Kevin P. Helmle, Richard E. Dodge, R. A. Ketcham

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Density bands in corals have long been considered a valuable tool for reconstructing past environmental and climatic conditions. X-radiographs reveal density banding within a skeletal slab, but provide little information about the skeletal variability causing banding. The skeletal architecture of Diploria strigosa was analyzed by X-radiography, X-ray computed tomography, and image analysis to identify the specific skeletal elements responsible for density banding. Threedimensional skeletal reconstructions, density-band reconstructions, and skeletal animations were created to assess the apparent changes in skeletal structure associated with density banding. Measurements were made of the dissepiments, thecae, septa, and columellae to determine how element size related …
