Dynamics Of Encoding In Neuron Populations: Some General Mathematical Features, Bruce Knight Jan 2000

Dynamics Of Encoding In Neuron Populations: Some General Mathematical Features, Bruce Knight

Knight Laboratory

The use of a population dynamics approach promises efficient simulation of large assemblages of neurons. Depending on the issues addressed and the degree of realism incorporated in the simulated neurons, a wide range of different population dynamics formulations can be appropriate. Here we present a common mathematical structure that these various formulations share and that implies dynamical behaviors that they have in common. This underlying structure serves as a guide toward efficient means of simulation. As an example, we derive the general population firing-rate frequency-response and show how it may be used effectively to address a broad range of interacting-population …

Year 2000 And The Banking Industry*, Jill Rainey Jan 2000

Year 2000 And The Banking Industry*, Jill Rainey

The Corinthian

The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) first brought the attention of the banking industry to the Year 2000 problem in 1996 (Year 2000 Project 1), but the Year 2000 problem originated many years ago. As a result of limited space, programmers in the 1960s and 1970s began using abbrevia· tions and codes to represent longer words, phrases, and numbers (FDIC Consumer News-Fall 1998 2). This shorthand method of indicating dates continued into the computer era and has worked fine until now. On January 1, 2000, things will not be so simple. If the date is recorded in a computer …

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2000 - 2001, Singapore Management University Jan 2000

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2000 - 2001, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

It has been an extremely gratifying first year for SMU. From scratch, we saw a curriculum developed, a more than credible faculty assembled, a campus bloom from the ground in record time, and a small group of bright and very promising young individuals set the standard as the historic pioneer intake of students. How did we even begin to persuade sponsors or students to come on board with us? We had no track record, no alumni, not even an existing undergraduate population. Yet, industry support was unabashedly warm from the time Singapore’s third university was announced. First year application for …

A Study Of A Manufacturing Consortium Pre-Employment Training Program, Carol L. Crotty Jan 2000

A Study Of A Manufacturing Consortium Pre-Employment Training Program, Carol L. Crotty

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The southern Ohio and northern Kentucky area is a region characterized by an economy in transition from the manufacturing sector to the service and retail sectors (Scioto County Government, 1998-00), which is causing various pressures on the workforce there. For example, the unemployment rate of Scioto County, Ohio, a centrally-located county in the region, was 9.7% in 1996, or almost twice the unemployment rate for the state of Ohio (Scioto County Government, 1998-00). Despite the fact that manufacturers in the area reported no difficulty in obtaining a satisfactory quantity of non-experienced assembly-line workers (ERISS Corporation, 2000), five local manufacturers were …

Does The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children / 3rd Edition Discriminate Between Ld And Non-Ld Children, Ages 9 To 16 Years Old?, Matthew E. Dehmlow Jan 2000

Does The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children / 3rd Edition Discriminate Between Ld And Non-Ld Children, Ages 9 To 16 Years Old?, Matthew E. Dehmlow

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether the Wechsler’s Intelligence Scale for Children / 3rd Edition (WISC-III) can discriminate between students with learning disabilities (LD students) and students without learning disabilities (non-LD students). Although the WISC-III has established itself as a valuable psychological instrument for measuring intelligence, the subtests of the WISC-IH have been selected to examine possible differentiating patterns when examining a group of LD subjects and comparing their subtest results to a group of non-LD subjects. The current study proposes to examine the capability of the WISC-HI’s subtests to discriminate between a population of …

The Ability Of Trail Making Test Parts A And B For Children And Adolescents To Discriminate Between Learning Disabled Students And Non-Learning Disabled Students, Glorene K. Evilsizor Jan 2000

The Ability Of Trail Making Test Parts A And B For Children And Adolescents To Discriminate Between Learning Disabled Students And Non-Learning Disabled Students, Glorene K. Evilsizor

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Trail Making Test Parts A and B is a neuropsychological test that has long been thought to be a highly reliable and valid test that is able to discriminate cerebral dysfunction. In the present study, an investigation was completed in order to determine whether or not the Trail Making Test Parts A and B could differentiate learning disabled students from non-learning disabled students in four counties in West Virginia. Fifty-six students ranging from ages 9-16 (mean age 9.9) were involved in the study. The convenience sample consisted of 27 learning disabled students and 29 controls or non-learning disabled students. …

Feature Extraction In Geobiophysical Modeling Of Mining Activity Impacting Dewey Lake, Kentucky, Sean K. Litteral Jan 2000

Feature Extraction In Geobiophysical Modeling Of Mining Activity Impacting Dewey Lake, Kentucky, Sean K. Litteral

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Surface coal mining activity has effects on watershed and lake morphology within the Appalachian Mountains that continue to be problematic. A watershed’s natural dynamic balance has been subject to the influence of various natural and anthropogenic parameters such as mining sediment transport, wind, wave effects and currents. Many techniques have been developed to improve image processing in geobiophysical modeling, which can assist scientists, government officials, and industry personal with decisions affecting environmental concerns. One of the more advanced techniques involves 3D visualization and geobiophysical modeling. This process was used in combining remotely sensed digital aerial imagery with Digital Elevation Models …

Use Of The Visual-Motor Integration Test To Discriminate Learning Disabled From Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Michelle Mcfarland Jan 2000

Use Of The Visual-Motor Integration Test To Discriminate Learning Disabled From Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Michelle Mcfarland

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Learning disabilities are fairly prevalent in the population of children today. Consensus in the area of learning disabilities (LD) is difficult to find. Definition, criteria, and detection methods are among the areas of disagreement. Assuming that LD involves central nervous system dysfunction, it follows that neuropsychological tests should be employed in the detection of LD in children. To date, no standard tests, or batteries of tests, are utilized to diagnose LD. This study examined the utility of the Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (VMI) in discriminating LD children from non-LD children aged 9 to 16 years of age. The …

The Effects Of A Functional Derotational Knee Brace On The Single-Leg Hop, Timed-Hop, And Stability Of Ncaa Division Ii Athletes, Heidi E. Moran Jan 2000

The Effects Of A Functional Derotational Knee Brace On The Single-Leg Hop, Timed-Hop, And Stability Of Ncaa Division Ii Athletes, Heidi E. Moran

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Functional knee braces are often used by athletes following an injury to their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). However, few athletes are given information as to whether the knee brace will hinder their ability. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a functional derotational knee brace on the single leg hop for distance, timed hop, and overall stability index of athletes. Twelve healthy knees were tested with and with out an off-the-shelf DonJoy Legend knee brace. A matched T-test showed a significant difference between the single leg hop (T = 2.71, p<.05) and timed hop (T=3.23, p<.05) while wearing the knee brace. There was no significance found when examining the stability index while wearing the brace. It was concluded that the functional knee brace decreased the distance of a single leg hop and increased the time it took to perform a timed hop.

Silicon Valley Reinvents The Company Town, Jan English-Lueck Jan 2000

Silicon Valley Reinvents The Company Town, Jan English-Lueck

Faculty Publications, Anthropology

California's Silicon Valley, famous for its innovative high-technology corporations, makes an ideal laboratory for exploring certain cultural inventions. It is a bellwether for a particular kind of social order—one dominated by work. In anthropology we encounter many frameworks through which life is organized—kinship, religion, and politics. Work is another lens through which life can be filtered. People may move to California for the weather, but they go to Silicon Valley to work. High-technology work draws on a global pool of talent and shifting skills that creates a culturally complex community. Migrants to Silicon Valley bring and enact an image of …

Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems For Higher Order Lidstone Boundary Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe Jan 2000

Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems For Higher Order Lidstone Boundary Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we consider the Lidstone boundary value problem y(t) = λa(t)f(y(t), . . . , y(t), . . . y(t)), 0 < t < 1, y(0) = 0 = y(1), i = 0, . . . , m − 1, where (−1)f > 0 and a is nonnegative. Growth conditions are imposed on f and inequalities involving an associated Green’s function are employed which enable us to apply a well-known cone theoretic fixed point theorem. This in turn yields a λ interval on which there exists a nontrivial solution in a cone for each λ in that interval. The methods of the paper are known. The emphasis here is that f depends upon higher order derivatives. Applications are made to …

Language And Inflation, Robert Leeson Jan 2000

Language And Inflation, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

Macroeconomic controversy is largely a tale of three cities - Chicago and the two Cambridges - or more accurately a tale of the cultures and policy prescriptions associated with those cities. In the four decades between the General Theory and the monetarist counter-revolution, economists were 'normally' distributed around orthodoxy (the Keynesian Neoclassical Synthesis, the ISLM model etc.) with the Chicago version of the Quantity Theory two standard deviations from the mean in the right tail, and the 'true believers' in Cambridge England an equal distance from the mean in the left tail. The preferred method of orthodox research involved 'formalist' …

Experiential Education What Does It Look And Feel Like?, Jill M. Collins Jan 2000

Experiential Education What Does It Look And Feel Like?, Jill M. Collins

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

There are many definitions for experiential education but to me it means learning by doing. With experiential education you use a real life problem or situation and you learn theories and concepts as well as skills by dealing with the situation. When students learn through experiential education their work reaches a larger audience and serves a greater purpose than simply meeting a teacher's requirement. Unfortunately I have not had much experience with this type of education and I'm not sure how to implement it in my classes. Our school has been slowly working towards experiential education. Some of the activities …

Distribution And Habitat Of The Southern Two-Lined Salamander, Eurycea Cirrigera, In Will County, Illinois: Implications For Population Management And Monitoring, David Mauger, Timothy Bell, Eric L. Peters Jan 2000

Distribution And Habitat Of The Southern Two-Lined Salamander, Eurycea Cirrigera, In Will County, Illinois: Implications For Population Management And Monitoring, David Mauger, Timothy Bell, Eric L. Peters

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The southern two-lined salamander (Eurycea cirrigera) was found to occur at numerous localities within the Kankakee River State Park in Will County, Illinois. The species is restricted to small drainages within the Kankakee River valley that have flow consisting of groundwater that discharges at seeps or springs at or within the valley bluff. Cooler water temperatures and possibly other conditions that are associated with water derived from seep or spring sources may be important factors in determining salamander abundance. This is particularly relevant to larval habitat. These observations suggest that the spring or seep-fed larval habitat may be the primary …

Students Creating Their Own Thinking-Learning Contexts, Marino C. Alvarez, Geoffrey Burks, Goli Sotoohi, Terry King, Bobby Hulan, Adelicia Graham

Teaching and Learning Faculty Research

This paper focuses on two high school students and their thoughts and feelings as they engaged in a topic of their choosing during a two-month summer action research program. Their high school astronomy teacher monitored their choice of topic and progress. The students engaged in authentic tasks and materials couched in problem-oriented formats within meaningful learning contexts designed to foster thinking and learning. These students worked as a team, but pursued individual paths of inquiry using critical and imaginative thinking, and engaged in social and solitary contexts that involved them in writing, intervening, and reflecting on ideas gleaned from conversations …
