Use Of Genetic Algorithms To Characterize Groundwater Contamination Source Areas, Chaz M. Williamson Mar 2000

Use Of Genetic Algorithms To Characterize Groundwater Contamination Source Areas, Chaz M. Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, genetic algorithms (GAs) were used to help interpret tracer breakthrough curves from partitioning interwell tracer tests (PITTs) conducted at Hill AFB, Utah by researchers from the University of Florida. Two transport models were developed to simulate tracer transport in the test cells. One model assumed the cell consisted of multiple layers, and that transport in each layer could he described by the one-dimensional advective/dispersive equation. The second model also assumed multiple layers, and modeled transport in the individual layers as advective transport through 100 tubes. Transport times were represented by a stochastic (lognormal) distribution. The model solutions …

Multiagent Systems Engineering: A Methodology For Analysis And Design Of Multiagent Systems, Mark F. Wood Mar 2000

Multiagent Systems Engineering: A Methodology For Analysis And Design Of Multiagent Systems, Mark F. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis defines a methodology for the creation of multiagent systems, the Multiagent Systems Engineering (MaSE) methodology. The methodology is a key issue in the development of any complex system and there is currently no standard or widely used methodology in the realm of multiagent systems. MaSE covers the entire software lifecycle, starting from an initial prose specification, and creating a set of formal design documents in a graphical style based on a formal syntax. The final product of MaSE is a diagram describing the deployment of a system of intelligent agents that communicate through structured conversations. MaSE was created …

A Greedy Multiple-Knapsack Heuristic For Solving Air Mobility Command’S Intratheater Airlift Problem, Nicholas J. Zeisler Mar 2000

A Greedy Multiple-Knapsack Heuristic For Solving Air Mobility Command’S Intratheater Airlift Problem, Nicholas J. Zeisler

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops a methodology using a greedy heuristic to solve Air Mobility Command's intratheater airlift scenario as a multiple knapsack problem. The objective is to maximize throughput in a theater given a vehicle mixture and assignment scheme. The model allows for a heterogeneous, user defined vehicle mix in a theater consisting of up to five bed down locations and up to seven forward operating locations. First, we preprocess routes, eliminating the large number of unattractive route choices in the problem. Then using a greedy heuristic, we select routes and assign them to aircraft located at any or all of …

Interactive Worksheets In Large Introductory Physics Courses, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky

Diandra Leslie-Pelecky Publications

Physics education research indicates that interactive instruction techniques improve student performance. 1 A variety of methods have been developed to promote interactivity, including peer instruction, 2 tutorials, 3 ranking tasks, 4 and in-class worksheets.5 These techniques are attractive because they are adaptable to classes of all sizes and rarely require the instructor to make radical changes in the course content or pedagogical approach. Our Physics 151 is a one-semester algebra-based course for which the primary audience is architecture, construction management, natural resources, and business majors. Eighty to 140 students are in each section. The course has three hours of lecture …

In Situ Ellipsometry Growth Characterization Of Dual Ion Beam Deposited Boron Nitride Thin Films, E. Franke, Mathias Schubert, John A. Woollam, J.-D. Hecht, G. Wagner, H. Neumann, F. Bigl

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Pure hexagonal h, as well as mixed-phase cubic/hexagonal c/h boron nitride (BN) thin films were deposited onto [001] silicon substrates using the dual ion beam deposition technique. The BN thin films were grown under UHV conditions at different substrate temperatures and ion beam bombarding parameters. Thin-film growth was monitored using in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry at 44 wavelengths between 420 and 761 nm. The in situ ellipsometric Ψ and Δ data were compared with two-layer growth model calculations for the mixed-phase c/h BN, and with one-layer growth model calculations for pure h-BN growth. In situ data provide information on …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Supersaturated Vapor Nucleation In Slit Pore, K. Yasuoka, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng Mar 2000

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Supersaturated Vapor Nucleation In Slit Pore, K. Yasuoka, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Molecular dynamics simulations of nucleation of Lennard-Jones vapor confined in a slit pore have been performed. The walls of the slit pore are structureless walls; each wall interacts with vapor molecules via Lennard-Jones 9–3 potential. The rate of nucleation in the steady state is determined by analyzing time evolution of the cluster size distribution. At the same vapor density and temperature, the nucleation rate in the slit pore is higher than in the homogeneous vapor [K. Yasuoka and M. Matsumoto, J. Chem. Phys. 109, 8451 (1998)], irrespective of the strength of attraction between the wall and vapor molecules. However, this …

A Framework For Acquiring Domain Semantics And Knowledge For Database Integration, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim, Veda C. Storey Mar 2000

A Framework For Acquiring Domain Semantics And Knowledge For Database Integration, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim, Veda C. Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Database integration research has traditionally focused on understanding integration issues from the schema and instance perspectives. As a result, database integration approaches tend to rely on a direct comparison of schema and instance elements. However, when the integration of heterogeneous databases is performed without considering the domain semantics and knowledge of local databases such as context information and requirement specifications, an incorrect integrated database may be produced. In this research, a framework for carrying out database integration tasks using the above knowledge is proposed. The framework provides a thorough foundation to: 1. analyze database integration issues from a broad scope, …

Computational Complexity Of Determining Resource Loops In Re-Entrant Flow Lines, Chaouki T. Abdallah, F. L. Lewis, B. G. Horne Mar 2000

Computational Complexity Of Determining Resource Loops In Re-Entrant Flow Lines, Chaouki T. Abdallah, F. L. Lewis, B. G. Horne

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a comparison study of the computational complexity of the general job shop protocol and the more structured flow line protocol in a flexible manufacturing system. It is shown that the representative problem of finding resource invariants is NP-complete in the case of the job shop, while in the flow line case it admits a closed form solution. The importance of correctly selecting part flow and job routing protocols in flexible manufacturing systems to reduce complexity is thereby conclusively demonstrated.

On Fractal Based Representation Of Image With Application To Image Processing., Suman Kumar Mitra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The language of an image is universal. Images were the means of communicating infor- mation in ancient days. Even today, although people from different parts of the world speak in different languages, an image conveys almost the same universal meaning to all. With the rapid development of modern computer technologies and with the increasing attempt in getting information at ones finger tips, the importance of communication of information using images can not be ignored.Images are stored in computers in the form of a collection of bits representing pixels (picture elements). Pictures are to be digitized to store them in computers. …

Similarity Based Approximate Reasoning., Swapan Raha Dr. Feb 2000

Similarity Based Approximate Reasoning., Swapan Raha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Many years of research in Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science and allied area reveal that the cognitive process of human reasoning deals with imprecise premises. As cognitive process of human reasoning is mainly concerned with the individual's perception, it is liable to be imprecise in nature. Precise traditional two-valued logic and/or multi-valued logics are not effective in handling such reasoning processes. This motivated Zadeh (109) to investigate how these impreciseness in human rea- soning could be modeled through some computable entities. In this regard, Zadeh has shown how such imprecise linguistic terms could be expressed through fuzzy sets over universes of …

Some Contribution To Reliability Analysis Of A Consecutive-K-Out-Of N: F System., Mohammad Khanjari Sadegh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Present day technology has been characterized by development of complex systems or equipments containing a large number of subaystems and com- ponents. Reliability, as a buman attribute, has been praised for a very long time. For technical systems, however, the reliability concept has not been applied for more than about 50 years. Reliability is the concern of all scien- tists and engineers engaged in developing a system, from design, through the manufacturing, to its ultimate use. Reliability technology has a potentially wide range of application areas like safety or risk analysis, environmental protection, quality, optimization, maintenance, engineering design, etc.For a …

Cathodic Indirect Electro-Oxidation——Organic Electro-Synthesis Dimethyl Sulfone, Deng-Ping Gu, Rui-Zhi Wang, Hong-Kun Zhang, Xue-Ying Zhang, Wei Li, Bao-Qiu Cui

Journal of Electrochemistry

A cathodic indirect electro-oxidation system was established for indirect electro-oxidize dimethyl sulfoxide to dimethyl sulfone with electro-eduction generated H2O2 catalyzed by the pertungstate/tungstate (WO52-/WO42-) redox mediator. Influences of current density, pH, temperature, and the current efficiencies etc. On the cathodic indirect electro-oxidation of dimethyl sulfone were investigated for determining optimum reaction conditions. The current efficiency reached more than 70%. Mother-liquid could be recycled to use without pollution.

Effect Of Different Species Of Cobalt Additive On Performance Of Nickel Hydroxide Electrode, Xian-Xia Yuan, Yin-Dong Wang, Feng Zhan Feb 2000

Effect Of Different Species Of Cobalt Additive On Performance Of Nickel Hydroxide Electrode, Xian-Xia Yuan, Yin-Dong Wang, Feng Zhan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Performances of nickel electrodes when adding or without adding Cobalt in different forms were studied, the results were interpreted by cyclic voltammetry(CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscope (EIS). It was demonstrated that the additions of Co, CoO, CoO+Co by mechanically mixing with Ni(OH)2 all can improve the performance of nickel electrode to some extent, and when Co is added in the form of CoO the best performance can be obtained. This can be mainly attributed to the fact that three kinds of Co additives all improved the structure of nickel hydroxide and the ability of H+ in electrolyte transporting …

Determination Of Diclofenac In Voltalin Tablets By Differential Pulse Voltammetry, Gui-Fen Wang, Yuan-Zhe Piao Feb 2000

Determination Of Diclofenac In Voltalin Tablets By Differential Pulse Voltammetry, Gui-Fen Wang, Yuan-Zhe Piao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Diclofenac, dissolved in a base solution of chlorhydric acid, showed a sensitive oxidation peak at 0.91 V (vs.SCE) when the solution was cyclically swept from +0.6 to +1.2 V(vs.SCE) by differential pulse voltammetry at GCE. There was a good linear relationship between the differential pulse peak current and the concentraion of diclofenac in the range from 5.0×10-7 to 6.0×10-6 mol/L, and the relative standard deviation is 3.5%(n=10). When determining the content of diclofenac in voltalin tablets, we have got the same results by this method as ultraviolet spectrophotometry.

Quantum Stochastic Dilation Of Completely Positive Semigroups And Flows., Debashish Goswami Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The central theme of the present thesia is quantum stochastic dilation af semigroupe of completely panitive mapa on operator algebran. It is the sim of all mathemati- cal, or even all scientific theorics, to understand a given class of objects through a tanonical and simpler subclass of it. For example, abstract C"-algebras are studied through their conerete realisation as elgebra of operators, contractions on a Hilbert space by unitaries. Hilbert modules by the factorissble ones, to mention anly a few. In most af these caes, a general object of the relavant class is sociated with a canonical candidate of the …

Studies Of Abnormal Infrared Effects Of Nanometer Thin Films Of Transition Metals And Alloys In Acid Solutions, Shi-Gang Sun, Ming-Sen Zheng, Guo-Qiang Lu, Li-Rong Cai, Sheng-Pei Cehn, Xiao-Yin Xiao

Journal of Electrochemistry

The adsorption of CO on electrodes of nanometer thin films of transition metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru) and alloys (PtPd, PtRu) prepared under cyclic voltammetric conditions has been studied by in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The abnormal infrared effects (AIREs) have been explored as a novel and general phenomenon. The AIREs consist mainly in the inversion of the direction of IR band and the significant enhancement of IR absorption by adsorbed CO species. It was revealed that the enhanced IR absoroption of adsorbed species in AIREs depends strongly on the nature of metal or alloy, and on the structure and the …

Studies On Finite Linear Cellular Automata., Palash Sarkar Dr. Feb 2000

Studies On Finite Linear Cellular Automata., Palash Sarkar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Cellular Automata were originally proposed by John von Neumann as formal models of self reproducing organisms. The structure studied was mostly an ane and two dimensional infinite grida, though higher dimensions were also considered. Computation universality and other computation theoretic questions were considered important. See Burks [24] for a collection of essays on important problems on cellular automata during this period. Later physicists and biologists began to study cellular automsta for the purpose of modelling in their respective domains. In the present era, cellalar automata is being atudied from many widely different angles, and the relationship of these structurea to …

Topologically Ordered Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media: Smectic Bragg Glasses, Karl Saunders, Brad Jacobsen, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner Feb 2000

Topologically Ordered Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media: Smectic Bragg Glasses, Karl Saunders, Brad Jacobsen, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner

Physics

We report the existence of two new topologically ordered glass phases of smectics in strained aerogel. In contrast to the case of unstrained aerogel, we find compelling theoretical arguments that a smectic in uniaxially stretched aerogel exhibits, for homeotropic nematic-aerogel alignment, a `smectic Bragg glass' in the universality class of the `XY Bragg glass'. On the other hand, a uniaxial compression, with homeotropic alignment, leads to an entirely novel type of anisotropic smectic elastic glass phase that we call the `m = 1 Bragg glass'. This latter phase exhibits anomalous elasticity, characterized by exponents that we calculate to high precision. …
