Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake, Ariel O. Acebal Mar 2000

Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake, Ariel O. Acebal

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The K index was developed by Bartels in 1939 as an estimate of the level of geomagnetic activity caused by the Sun. This index was computed manually every three hours at geomagnetic observatories using the magnetic traces of the surface planetary magnetic field. In 1991, the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy approved four additional methods to compute the K index; all of them were computer algorithms. One of the approved methods, the Wilson code, recently underwent some modifications. The new algorithm is now part of a Windows-based computer program being developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). After …

Structural And Electronic Properties Of Cobalt/Alumina Tunnel Junctions From First Principles, Ivan I. Oleinik, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, David G. Pettifor Mar 2000

Structural And Electronic Properties Of Cobalt/Alumina Tunnel Junctions From First Principles, Ivan I. Oleinik, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, David G. Pettifor

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

A detailed first-principles study of the atomic and electronic structure of the Co/Al2O3/Co magnetic tunnel junction has been performed in order to elucidate the key features determining the spin-dependent tunneling. The atomic structure of the multilayer with the O- and Al-terminated interfaces between fcc Co(111) and crystalline α-Al2O3(0001) has been optimized using self-consistent spin-polarized calculations within densityfunctional theory and the generalized gradient approximation. We found that the relaxed atomic structure of the O-terminated interface is characterized by a rippling of the Co interfacial plane, the average Co-O bond length being 2.04 Å …

What is wrong with physics?

  • Lowest number of BS degrees in 40 years, but seems to be leveling off.
  • High percentage of foreign PhD students in many departments.

What are some ways out of this situation?

  • A way might be curriculum innovation

Physics and Mathematics:
They are like two functions that have always been defined on the same domain, now
they seem to have a greater overlap.

  • How did it happen?
  • How does it work?
  • What will be the result?

Ecology (Re)Defined, Mary Rowland Mar 2000

Ecology (Re)Defined, Mary Rowland

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This slender, well-written volume is a compendium of terms, 60 altogether, purportedly intended to introduce the layperson to the discipline of ecology. With encyclopedic listings from "Air" to "Zoos," we learn that potential effects of global warming include the spread of malaria and other tropical diseases to previously uninfected areas, and that the world's six billion humans consume 40% of the planet's photosynthetic output. It is clear from the first entry that the book is as much an environmental primer as a science-based one. For example, we read under the topic "Air" that "We should not continue human activities that …

Fundamental Properties Of Pair-Wise Interactions Naturally Lead To Quarks And Quark Confinement: A Theorem Motivated By Neural Universal Approximation Results, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2000

Fundamental Properties Of Pair-Wise Interactions Naturally Lead To Quarks And Quark Confinement: A Theorem Motivated By Neural Universal Approximation Results, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In traditional mechanics, most interactions are pair-wise; if we omit one of the particles from our description, then the original pair-wise interaction can sometimes only be represented as interaction between triples, etc. It turns out that, vice versa, every possible interaction between N particles can be represented as pair-wise interaction if we represent each of the original N particles as a triple of new ones (and two new ones are not enough for this representation). The resulting three "particles" actually represent a single directly observable particles and in this sense, cannot be separated. So, this representation gives a fundamental reason …

Numerical Investigation Of Boundary Conditions For Moving Contact Line Problems, Sandesh Somalinga, Arijit Bose Mar 2000

Numerical Investigation Of Boundary Conditions For Moving Contact Line Problems, Sandesh Somalinga, Arijit Bose

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

When boundary conditions arising from the usual hydrodynamic assumptions are applied, analyses of dynamic wetting processes lead to a well-known nonintegrable stress singularity at the dynamic contact line, necessitating new ways to model this problem. In this paper, numerical simulations for a set of representative problems are used to explore the possibility of providing material boundary conditions for predictive models of inertialess moving contact line processes. The calculations reveal that up to Capillary number Ca=0.15, the velocity along an arc of radius 10Li (Li is an inner, microscopic length scale! from the dynamic contact line is independent of …

Freezing Transition Of A Strongly Dipolar Simple Fluid, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng Mar 2000

Freezing Transition Of A Strongly Dipolar Simple Fluid, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The freezing transition of a strongly dipolar Lennard-Jones fluid is investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the system undergoes a ferroelectric liquid-to-solid transition when cooled under a constant pressure. Near the triple point the stable solid phase is a body-centered orthorhombic ferroelectric crystal; a metastable ferroelectric solid phase with distorted hexagonal lattice structure is also discovered. To locate the freezing point, Gibbs free energies of the solid and liquid phase are determined using a thermodynamic integration method.

Chemical Nox Budget In The Upper Troposphere Over The Tropical South Pacific, Martin G. Schultz, Daniel J. Jacob, J D. Bradshaw, S T. Sandholm, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, Hanwant B. Singh Mar 2000

Chemical Nox Budget In The Upper Troposphere Over The Tropical South Pacific, Martin G. Schultz, Daniel J. Jacob, J D. Bradshaw, S T. Sandholm, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, Hanwant B. Singh

Earth Sciences

The chemical NOx budget in the upper troposphere over the tropical South Pacific is analyzed using aircraft measurements made at 6-12 km altitude in September 1996 during the Global Tropospheric Experiment (GTE) Pacific Exploratory Mission (PEM) Tropics A campaign. Chemical loss and production rates of NOx along the aircraft flight tracks are calculated with a photochemical model constrained by observations. Calculations using a standard chemical mechanism show a large missing source for NOx; chemical loss exceeds chemical production by a factor of 2.4 on average. Similar or greater NOx budget imbalances have been reported in analyses of data from previous …

Landmarks For Absolute Localization, Jon Howell, Keith Kotay

Computer Science Technical Reports

For certain experiments in mobile robotics, it is convenient to eliminate positional estimation error in the interest of analyzing other parts of the experiment. We designed and implemented a simple, accurate scheme for encoding and recovering absolute position information. The encoding is a two-dimensional image printed on the plane of the floor, and the absolute position information is recovered using a downward-looking video camera mounted on a mobile robot.

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Second-order [O(k2), k = ω/c] nondipole effects in soft-x-ray photoemission are demonstrated via an experimental and a theoretical study of angular distributions of neon valence photoelectrons in the 100–1200 eV photon-energy range. A newly derived theoretical expression for nondipolar angular distributions characterizes the second-order effects using four new parameters with primary contributions from pure-quadrupole and octupole-dipole interference terms. Independent-particle calculations of these parameters account for a significant portion of the existing discrepancy between experiment and theory for Ne 2p first-order nondipole parameters.
