Beyond Perception: A Pretest And Posttest Evaluation Of A Regional Internet Extension Inservice Training, Robert M. Lippert, Owen Plank, Rama Radhakrishna Apr 2000

Beyond Perception: A Pretest And Posttest Evaluation Of A Regional Internet Extension Inservice Training, Robert M. Lippert, Owen Plank, Rama Radhakrishna

Journal of Extension

An Internet inservice training titled "Soil Acidity and Liming" was offered to county Extension agents representing six states (Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia). A Web page was constructed with materials provided by several specialists, and Listserv questions received responses from nine specialists representing the six states. A pretest and posttest were submitted by the agents on-line, along with their responses to a brief questionnaire. The questionnaire responses show that most of the agents were very receptive to this method of inservice training. The pretest and posttest scores show that the training resulted in a significant increase …

Beneficial Science Teacher Training, Joseph Konen, Robert L. Horton Apr 2000

Beneficial Science Teacher Training, Joseph Konen, Robert L. Horton

Journal of Extension

Extension trainers who serve teachers assist them greatly when they provide "hands-on" experiences. A "best practice" is having the teachers experience the same methods that they will use when teaching. Teachers were surveyed both before and after their training and also after they had taught the curriculum. They reported their feelings on three scales: Confidence, Interest, and Anxiety. This research shows that teacher anxiety decreased, curiosity increased, and their confidence grew as they participated in these training modules. Further research on the teachers' experiences when teaching the curricula would enable more effective support of teachers at that time.

A Longitudinal Assessment Of Temperament In Octopus Bimaculoides, David Loyd Sinn Apr 2000

A Longitudinal Assessment Of Temperament In Octopus Bimaculoides, David Loyd Sinn

Dissertations and Theses

Cephalopods, including Octopus spp., are highly intelligent molluscs that play major roles in many marine food webs, both as top-level feeders (Ambrose, 1984) as well as by constituting a major source of protein for the animals above them (Lang, Hochberg, Ambrose, & Engle, 1997). They also are fascinating organisms for behavioral studies, with elaborate repertoires of behavior based on plasticity and learning (Wells, 1962a; 1962b; 1978) which in complexity rivals that of the vertebrates. The study of individual differences in behavior is a facet of behavioral research that has recently gained attention in the literature (Gosling & John, 1999). Traditionally, …

Influence Of Advection On Measurements Of The Net Ecosystem-Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2 From A Very Tall Tower, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, Bernard W. Berger, Linsey C. Marr Apr 2000

Influence Of Advection On Measurements Of The Net Ecosystem-Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2 From A Very Tall Tower, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, Bernard W. Berger, Linsey C. Marr

Publications and Research

In most studies of the net ecosystem-atmosphere exchange of CO2 (NEE) using tower-based eddy covariance( EC) systems it has been assumed that advection is negligible. In this study we use a scalar conservation budget method to estimate the contribution of advection to NEE measurements from a very tall tower in northern Wisconsin. We examine data for June-August 1997. Measured NEEo, calculated as the sum of the EC flux plus the rate of change of storage below the EC measurement level, is expected to be constant with measurement height, and we take the differences between levels as a measure of …

Kuchida, S. Kono, K. Konishi, L. Dale Van Vleck, M. Suzuki, S. Miyoshi

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Crude fat content of longissimus (ribeye) muscle of beef cattle was predicted from a ratio of fat area (RFA) to area of ribeye muscle calculated from computer image analysis (CIA). Cross sections of 64 ribeyes taken from the 6–7th rib from cattle at experiment station A and cross sections of 94 ribeyes taken from the 6–7th rib from cattle at Experiment Station B were used in this study. Slices (1 to 1.5 cm in thickness) of just the Longissimus dorsi were homogenized and sampled for chemical estimation of crude fat content using petroleum ether. Crude fat content as determined from …
