Labors Of Love, Samuel Schuman Apr 2000

Labors Of Love, Samuel Schuman

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

I want to speculate a bit about some of the connections between liberal learning and work. This might, at first, seem what those of us in early English literature would call a metaphysical conceit-the yoking together by violence of two seemingly unconnected concepts; an odd connection, in other words. I've been thinking about "work" a lot these days-as I get closer to retirement-because it is a notion which seems to link together a number of things happening in higher education generally, in my college in particular, and in my personal responses to both.

Influence Of Advection On Measurements Of The Net Ecosystem-Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2 From A Very Tall Tower, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, Bernard W. Berger, Linsey C. Marr Apr 2000

Influence Of Advection On Measurements Of The Net Ecosystem-Atmosphere Exchange Of Co2 From A Very Tall Tower, Chuixiang Yi, Kenneth J. Davis, Peter S. Bakwin, Bernard W. Berger, Linsey C. Marr

Publications and Research

In most studies of the net ecosystem-atmosphere exchange of CO2 (NEE) using tower-based eddy covariance( EC) systems it has been assumed that advection is negligible. In this study we use a scalar conservation budget method to estimate the contribution of advection to NEE measurements from a very tall tower in northern Wisconsin. We examine data for June-August 1997. Measured NEEo, calculated as the sum of the EC flux plus the rate of change of storage below the EC measurement level, is expected to be constant with measurement height, and we take the differences between levels as a measure of …

Efficient Algorithms And Implementations For Signal Processing, Changbai Xiao Apr 2000

Efficient Algorithms And Implementations For Signal Processing, Changbai Xiao

Doctoral Dissertations

A scheme is presented to regain a finite number of lost samples from a Nyquist-rate-sampled band-limited signal f of finite energy by replenishing new sample values of the same number. The result can also be viewed as the solution to a special non-uniform sampling problem.

A scheme is also presented to recover a band-limited function f of finite energy from its sampling values on real sequences with an accumulation point. The result given here can also be viewed as an approach to the extrapolation problem of determination a band-limited function in terms of its given values on a finite interval. …

The Fermat Point And The Steiner Problem, J. N. Boyd, P. N. Raychowdhury

Virginia Journal of Science

We revisit the convex coordinates of the Fermat point of a triangle. We have already computed these convex coordinates in a general setting. In this note, we obtain the coordinates in the context of the Steiner problem. Thereafter, we pursue calculations suggested by the problem.

On The Main Irradiation-Induced Defect In Gan, L. Polenta, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look Apr 2000

On The Main Irradiation-Induced Defect In Gan, L. Polenta, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

We show that the usual Arrhenius analysis of the main electron-irradiation-induced defect trap in n-type GaN, observed by deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), is not sufficiently accurate. Instead, an exact fitting of the DLTS spectrum for this trap reveals two components, each of which has a thermal energy near 60 meV, not the apparent 140–200 meV, as given in other DLTS studies. This result resolves the discrepancy between Hall-effect and DLTS determinations of the thermal energy of this defect center.

Property Rights In Emerging Platform Technologies, Douglas Gary Lichtman Apr 2000

Property Rights In Emerging Platform Technologies, Douglas Gary Lichtman

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper considers an externality that affects a broad range of markets, specifically markets where one set of firms sells some platform technology like a computer, video game console, or operating system, while another possibly overlapping set of firms sells peripherals compatible with that platform, for example computer software or video game cartridges. The externality causes certain peripheral sellers to charge prices that are unprofitably high. That is, these firms could earn greater profits if only they could coordinate to charge lower prices. In many markets, such coordination is possible; firms can contract, for example, or integrate. In markets based …

Statutory Interpretation, Property Rights, And Boundaries: The Nature And Limits Of Protection In Trademark Dilution, Trade Dress, And Product Configuration Cases, Gary Myers Apr 2000

Statutory Interpretation, Property Rights, And Boundaries: The Nature And Limits Of Protection In Trademark Dilution, Trade Dress, And Product Configuration Cases, Gary Myers

Faculty Publications

This article, however, takes the view that the basic landscape in trademark law is unlikely to change in the near future. Congress has only recently enacted the Trademark Dilution Act, and there seems to be little movement to amend it dramatically, let alone repeal it. There have been several recently enacted amendments to the Lanham Act addressing functionality that make great sense and are consistent with the principles suggested here, as will be discussed below. Moreover, the Supreme Court in Two Pesos, Qualitex, Park ‘n’ Fly, and Samara has recently set forth rules that will allow trade dress claims to …

The Theory Of Money, Martin Shubik Apr 2000

The Theory Of Money, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Fiat money is a creation of both the state and society. Its value is supported by expectations which are conditioned by the dynamics of trust in government, the socio-economic structure and by outside events such as wars, plagues or political unrest. The micro-management of a dynamic economy is not far removed in difficulty from the micro-management of the weather. However, money and the financial institutions and instruments of a modern economy provide the means to influence expectations and bound behavior. Paper money emerges as a virtual commodity. The dynamics of the economy permits it to serve as an imaginary gold. …

A Special Theory Of Biphasic Mixtures And Experimental Results For Human Annulus Fibrosus Tested In Confined Compression, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz Apr 2000

A Special Theory Of Biphasic Mixtures And Experimental Results For Human Annulus Fibrosus Tested In Confined Compression, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz

Mechanical Engineering

A finite deformation mixture theory is used to quantify the mechanical properties of the annulus fibrosus using experimental data obtained from a confined compression protocol. Certain constitutive assumptions are introduced to derive a special mixture of an elastic solid and an inviscid fluid, and the constraint of intrinsic incompressibility is introduced in a manner that is consistent with results obtained for the special theory. Thirty-two annulus fibrosus specimens oriented in axial (n = 16) and radial (n = 16) directions were obtained from the middle-lateral portion of intact intervertebral discs from human lumbar spines and tested in a stress-relaxation protocol. …

Alcohol Intake And Mortality: Findings From The National Health Interview Surveys (1988 And 1990), Youlian Liao, Daniel L. Mcgee, Guichan Cao, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

The authors used prospective data from two supplemental studies of the National Health Interview Survey, the 1988 Alcohol Supplement and the 1990 Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Supplement, to examine the relation between alcohol intake and mortality. Their study included 17,821 men and 25,874 women aged 40 years or older at baseline; during an average of 6 years of follow-up, 5,540 deaths occurred. The alcohol-mortality relation was U-shaped for men and J-shaped for women. On the basis of categorical analyses adjusted for age, race, smoking, and baseline diseases, men who drank 2 drinks per day had a significantly lower risk …

Solving Discrete Optimization Problems When Element Costs Are Random, Diptesh Ghosh, Shubhabrata Das Apr 2000

Solving Discrete Optimization Problems When Element Costs Are Random, Diptesh Ghosh, Shubhabrata Das

Working Papers

In a general class of discrete optimization problems with min-sum objective function, some of the elements may have random costs associated with them. In such a situation, the notion of optimality needs to be suitably modified. We define an optimal solution to be a feasible solution with the minimum risk. It is shown that the knowledge of the means of these random costs is enough to reduce such a problem into one with no random costs.
