Comment On "Dynamically Maintained Steady-State Pressure Gradients", Todd L. Duncan Apr 2000

Comment On "Dynamically Maintained Steady-State Pressure Gradients", Todd L. Duncan

Center for Science Education Publications and Presentations

Sheehan [Phys. Rev. E 57, 6660 (1998)] recently discussed the possibility of establishing a dynamically maintained, steady-state pressure gradient in a gas filling a cavity. In this Comment it is pointed out that the pressure gradients in such a system, if attainable in the laboratory, could be used to violate the second law of thermodynamics.

Accountability Policy At The Street Level In Kentucky: Teachers And Administrators Debate The Fairness Of Continuous Improvement Versus Relative Standing, Jane Clark Lindle Apr 2000

Accountability Policy At The Street Level In Kentucky: Teachers And Administrators Debate The Fairness Of Continuous Improvement Versus Relative Standing, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

While scholars of educational accountability policy will not be surprised at the power of local implementers in modifying accountability efforts, Kentucky's street-level debate splits two constituencies in defining a fair system. Advocates for the education of all children including the poor and minorities support the continuous improvement model, while elite advocates support recognition of relative standing of schools. This paper includes data from teachers and administrators in four schools identified as eligible for state assistance under Kentucky's testing and accountability system. Of particular interest are the perceptions of accountability held by teachers and administrators in one school that had received …

Towards Feasible Approach To Plan Checking Under Probabilistic Uncertainty: Interval Methods, Raul A. Trejo, Vladik Kreinovich, Chitta Baral Apr 2000

Towards Feasible Approach To Plan Checking Under Probabilistic Uncertainty: Interval Methods, Raul A. Trejo, Vladik Kreinovich, Chitta Baral

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The main problem of planning is to find a sequence of actions that an agent must perform to achieve a given objective. An important part of planning is checking whether a given plan achieves the desired objective. Historically, in AI, the planning and plan checking problems were mainly formulated and solved in a deterministic environment, when the initial state is known precisely and when the results of each action in each state is known (and uniquely determined). In this deterministic case, planning is difficult, but plan checking is straightforward. In many real-life situations, we only know the probabilities of different …

An Introduction To The Drought Monitor, Mark Svoboda Apr 2000

An Introduction To The Drought Monitor, Mark Svoboda

Drought Network News (1994–2001)

The idea of better monitoring and assessing drought has been a quest of NDMC director Don Wilhite for more than two decades. He has been an advocate of better climate monitoring, particularly drought monitoring, because drought is a normal, recurring hazard in virtually all of the United States. The challenge is to recognize drought, a slow-onset or “creeping” natural disaster, before a region is in the middle of one.

The most recent surge in interest in drought arose during the 1995–96 drought in the Southwest and southern Great Plains states. At the NDMC we discussed how we could do a …

The Effects Of Structured One-On-One Tutoring In Sight Word Recognition Of First-Grade Students At-Risk For Reading Failure, Laureen Goers Mayfield

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an alternative reading program on the performance of at-risk first graders. Sixty first graders from three north Louisiana public elementary schools with high poverty rates, who were determined by their teachers and principals to be functioning in the bottom 20 to 30% of first grade reading students, were purposefully selected. Students were pretested on three subtests of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test-Revised (WRMT-R), Form G: Letter Identification, Word Identification, and Word Attack. Participants were randomly assigned to either a control or an experimental group. Experimental group students received 15 …

The Static Thrust Characterization Of The Quatra Aerrow Q100xl Engine For Flight Performance Prediction Of The 1/3-Scaled Cessna 172p Model, Joon Fui Ho Apr 2000

The Static Thrust Characterization Of The Quatra Aerrow Q100xl Engine For Flight Performance Prediction Of The 1/3-Scaled Cessna 172p Model, Joon Fui Ho

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this research is to predict the thrust as a function of forward flight velocity required for the one-third-scaled Cessna 172P. This model was designed to verify scaling laws. Therefore, it is important that it be aerodynamically scaled and that it have similar thrust characteristic as that of the full scale Cessna 172P. Several propellers and two Quatra Aerrow Q100XL two-cycle engines were acquired for this research project. Three propellers were selected to undergo a series of static thrust testing. The measured static thrust was then used to predict the flight performance of each tested propellers with the …

Cramer-Rao Bound And Optimal Amplitude Estimator Of Superimposed Sinusoidal Signals With Unknown Frequencies, Shaohui Jia Apr 2000

Cramer-Rao Bound And Optimal Amplitude Estimator Of Superimposed Sinusoidal Signals With Unknown Frequencies, Shaohui Jia

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation addresses optimally estimating the amplitudes of superimposed sinusoidal signals with unknown frequencies. The Cramer-Rao Bound of estimating the amplitudes in white Gaussian noise is given, and the maximum likelihood estimator of the amplitudes in this case is shown to be asymptotically efficient at high signal to noise ratio but finite sample size. Applying the theoretical results to signal resolutions, it is shown that the optimal resolution of multiple signals using a finite sample is given by the maximum likelihood estimator of the amplitudes of signals.

A Discussion Of Response Distortion In Personality Tests And Its Effect On Criterion Validity And Applicant Ranking In Employee Selection, Mary E. Stacke Apr 2000

A Discussion Of Response Distortion In Personality Tests And Its Effect On Criterion Validity And Applicant Ranking In Employee Selection, Mary E. Stacke

Theses and Graduate Projects

Personality testing is widely used in the employee selection process, particularly to determine leadership potential for management positions. Recent research has established personality tests as potentially valuable predictors of job performance. However, a reliance upon personality testing in the employment setting raises a common concern about the prevalence of response distortion and its effect on criterion validity and applicant ranking.

This paper provides background information on personality definition and construct validity and then discusses the two primary types of response distortion, self-deception and impression management. Areas of focus include the prevalence of impression management in personality testing for employee selection, …

An Empirical Study Of The Effects Of Incorporating Fault Exposure Potential Estimates Into A Test Data Adequacy Criterion, Wei Chen, Gregg Rothermel, Roland H. Untch, Jeffery Von Ronne Apr 2000

An Empirical Study Of The Effects Of Incorporating Fault Exposure Potential Estimates Into A Test Data Adequacy Criterion, Wei Chen, Gregg Rothermel, Roland H. Untch, Jeffery Von Ronne

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Code-coverage-based test data adequacy criteria typically treat all code components as equal. In practice, however, the probably that a test case can expose a fault in a code component varies: some faults are more easily revealed than others. Thus, researchers have suggested that if we could estimate the probability that a fault in a code component will cause a failure, we could use this estimate to determine the number of executions of a component that are required to achieve a certain level of confidence in that component’s correctness. This estimate in turn could be used to improve the fault-detection effectiveness …

Reply To ‘‘Comment On ‘Dynamically Maintained Steady-State Pressure Gradients’ ’’, D. P. Sheehan

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

A reply is made to Duncan’s Comment [T. L. Duncan, Phys. Rev. E 61, 4661 (2000)] on my earlier paper [D. P. Sheehan, Phys. Rev. E 57, 6660 (1998)] in which he raises an apparent second-law paradox arising from dynamically maintained, steady-state pressure gradients. Resolutions to this paradox are considered in light of current theoretical and experimental understanding.

Cross Media Promotion Of The Internet In Television Commercials, Steven M. Edwards, Carrie La Ferle

Temerlin Advertising Institute Research

Increasing presence of internet addresses across traditional media spurred the current study. Specifically, the study examined the cross media promotion of website addresses in television commercials to determine if and when they were being used, and by whom? For comparison purposes, other formsof direct response channels were also measured. A clearer understanding of the practice of promoting web sites in television commercials was garnered by examining website addresses for their size, length, positioning, frequency, product categoy representation, and other important attributes. The findings provide an initial base from which future growth and style of web site advertising in traditional media …

Feeding Habits Of Young-Of-Year Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis, And White Perch, Morone Americana, In Lower James River, Va, Paul J. Rudershausen, Joseph G. Loesch

Virginia Journal of Science

A total of 188 young-of-year (YOY) striped bass, Morone saxatilis, and 199 YOY white perch, Morone americana, were collected by pushnet, seine and trawl during 24-hour periods from June through August, 1992 in lower James River, Virginia. The purpose was to identify prey and temporal and spatial feeding habits. Copepods were the most numerous prey of both species. Fishes and mysids comprised the largest volumetric percentage of diets of striped bass and white perch, respectively. Using an index of relative importance, leptodorids and copepods were the most important prey of striped bass and white perch, respectively. Both species …

Partial Privatization Of Social Security: Assessing Its Effect On Women, Minorities, And Lower-Income Workers, Kathryn L. Moore Apr 2000

Partial Privatization Of Social Security: Assessing Its Effect On Women, Minorities, And Lower-Income Workers, Kathryn L. Moore

Missouri Law Review

This Article explains why partial privatization would likely have a disproportionately adverse effect on the benefits of three specific subpopulations: women, minorities, and lower-income workers. The Article focuses on these three groups principally because they are at a heightened risk of poverty in old age.' Since one of the fundamental purposes of Social Security is to provide for progressive redistribution to lift the elderly out of poverty, policymakers should be (and are)' concerned with how Social Security reform would likely affect these subpopulations.' Of course, not all women and minorities are at heightened risk of poverty in old age.' s …

Mental Health Parity: National And State Perspectives 2000: A Report To The Florida Legislature, Bruce Lubotsky Levin, Ardis Hanson, Richard D. Coe, Sara A. Kuppin

Dean's Office Publications

By failing to appropriately treat adults and children with severe mental illness, we incur enormous social costs through payments for disability benefits (Medicaid, SSI, SSDI), increased medical expenses, accidents and suicides, avoidable criminal justice proceedings, lost productivity, and increased need for homeless shelters and services. People who are underinsured are forced by arbitrary caps and limits to increasingly rely on the public sector. By providing parity for mental health, Florida will bring mental health into the mainstream of health care and become a leader in dispelling the prejudice that surrounds treatment of persons with severe mental illness.
