SCHOOL FACILITIES. 55% LOCAL VOTE. BONDS, TAXES. ACCOUNTABILITY REQUIREMENTS. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND STATUTE. Authorizes bonds for construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation or replacement of school facilities if approved by 55% vote for projects evaluated by schools, community college districts, county education offices for safety, class size, and information technology needs. Accountability requirements include annual performance and financial audits on use of bond proceeds. Prohibits use of bond proceeds for salaries or school operating expenses. Requires facilities for public charter schools. Authorizes property taxes in excess of 1% limit by 55% vote, rather than current two-thirds, as necessary to pay school bonds. …

Bounding Interval Rational Bézier Curves With Interval Polynomial Bézier Curves, Thomas W. Sederberg, Falai Chen, Wenping Lou
Bounding Interval Rational Bézier Curves With Interval Polynomial Bézier Curves, Thomas W. Sederberg, Falai Chen, Wenping Lou
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we put forward and study the problem of bounding an interval rational Bézier curve with an interval polynomial Bézier curve. We propose three different methods—Hybrid Method, Perturbation Method and Linear Programming Method to solve this problem. Examples are illustrated to compare the three different methods. The empirical results show that the Perturbation Method and the Linear Programming Method produce much tighter bounds than the Hybrid Method, though they are computationally several times more expensive.

A Dynamical Solution To The Problem Of A Small Cosmological Constant And Late-Time Cosmic Acceleration, Christian Armendariz-Picon, V. Mukhanov, Paul J. Steinhardt

Increasing evidence suggests that most of the energy density of the universe consists of a dark energy component with negative pressure, a ``cosmological constant" that causes the cosmic expansion to accelerate. In this paper, we address the puzzle of why this component comes to dominate the universe only recently rather than at some much earlier epoch. We present a class of theories based on an evolving scalar field where the explanation is based entirely on internal dynamical properties of the solutions. In the theories we consider, the dynamics causes the scalar field to lock automatically into a negative pressure state …

An Optimal-Order Error Estimate For An Ellam Scheme For Two-Dimensional Linear Advection-Diffusion Equations, Hong Wang
Faculty Publications
An Eulerian-Lagrangian localized adjoint method (ELLAM) is presented and an- alyzed for two-dimensional linear advection-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs). An optimal-order error estimate in the L^2 norm and a superconvergence estimate in a discrete H^1 norm are derived. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical estimates.

Carbon Nanotube Atomic Force Microscopy Tips: Direct Growth By Chemical Vapor Deposition And Application To High-Resolution Imaging, Chin Li Cheung, Jason H. Hafner, Charles M. Lieber
Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications
Carbon nanotubes are potentially ideal atomic force microscopy probes because they can have diameters as small as one nanometer, have robust mechanical properties, and can be specifically functionalized with chemical and biological probes at the tip ends. This communication describes methods for the direct growth of carbon nanotube tips by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using ethylene and iron catalysts deposited on commercial silicon-cantilever-tip assemblies. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements demonstrate that multiwalled nanotube and single-walled nanotube tips can be grown by predictable variations in the CVD growth conditions. Force-displacement measurements made on the tips show that they …

Teaching And Assessing The Writing Process, Gail H. Biros
Teaching And Assessing The Writing Process, Gail H. Biros
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to provide valuable information regarding the assessment and teaching of writing skills. Although students spend time writing stories, they do not write frequently enough to learn the basic skills of writing. Just as teachers learned that children needed direct instruction in reading skills to make "Whole Language" successful, similarly writing must be taught utilizing direct instruction of specific skills.
There are few reliable and valid assessment tools in the written language domain. A comprehensive assessment tool is needed at the beginning of the school year to help the teacher focus on the individual student …

A Single Circumbinary Disk In The Hd 98800 Quadruple System, D. W. Koerner, Eric L.N. Jensen, K. L. Cruz, T. B. Guild, K. Gultekin
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
We present subarcsecond thermal infrared imaging of HD 98800, a young quadruple system composed of a pair of low-mass spectroscopic binaries separated by 0".8 (38 AU), each with a K-dwarf primary. Images at wavelengths ranging from 5 to 24.5 mu m show unequivocally that the optically fainter binary, HD 98800B, is the sole source of a comparatively large infrared excess on which a silicate emission feature is superposed. The excess is detected only at wavelengths of 7.9 mu m and longer, peaks at 25 mu m, and has a best-fit blackbody temperature of 150 K, indicating that most of the …

A critical, but insufficiently understood, component of global change is the influence of Arctic freshwater input on water mass exchange between the Arctic Ocean and Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Four of the Earth's 10 largest river systems, the Mackenzie, Ob,Yenisei, and Lena, contribute water to the Arctic shore (Figure 1) from a vast watershed that drains continental interiors. This river discharge flows into the world's largest contiguous continental shelf and supplies over 50% (1823 km3 ) of the riverine input to the Arctic Ocean.

Roles Of Odor, Taste, And Toxicity In The Food Preferences Of Lambs: Implications For Mimicry In Plants, Frederick D. Provenza, Bruce A. Kimball, Juan J. Villalba

In the traditional sense, food ingestion consists of prehending, masticating, swallowing, and digesting plant matter. It is also possible to ingest plants without eating them. Volatile compounds are inhaled directly into the lungs and transported from the lungs into the bloodstream. Volatiles in high concentrations could presumably produce toxicosis, without an herbivore ever ingesting a plant in the customary sense. Volatile compounds may be aposematic, serving to warn potential predators of toxins in plants. We conducted three experiments to explore the roles of odor, taste, and toxicity in the food preferences of lambs. The first experiment determined if brief exposure …
