Real-Time Performance Analysis Of Wireless Multimedia Networks Based On Partially Observed Multivariate Point Processes, William S. Hortos Jul 2000

Real-Time Performance Analysis Of Wireless Multimedia Networks Based On Partially Observed Multivariate Point Processes, William S. Hortos

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Third-generation (3G) wireless networks will support integrated multimedia services based on a cellular extension of a packet-switched architecture using variants of the Internet protocol (IP). Services can be categorized as real-time and delaysensitive, or non-real-time and delay-insensitive. Each call, arriving to or active within the network, carries demand for one or more services in parallel; each service type with a guaranteed quality of service (QoS). Admission of new calls to the wireless IP network (WIN) from the gateway of a wired network or from a mobile subscriber (MS) is allowed by call admission control (CAC) procedures. Roaming of the MSs …

Static-Electric-Field-Induced Polarization Effects In Harmonic Generation, Bogdan Borca, A.V. Flegel, M.V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Dejan B. Milosevic, Anthony F. Starace Jul 2000

Static-Electric-Field-Induced Polarization Effects In Harmonic Generation, Bogdan Borca, A.V. Flegel, M.V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Dejan B. Milosevic, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Two static-electric-field-induced effects on harmonic generation are demonstrated analytically and numerically: elliptic dichroism (in which the harmonic yield is different for right and left elliptically polarized laser fields) and elliptical polarization of harmonics produced by linearly polarized driving laser fields. Both effects stem from interference of real and imaginary parts of the nonlinear atomic susceptibilities. Possibilities for experimentally measuring these effects are discussed.

Dynamics Of Green Ash Woodlands In Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Lynn R. Irby, Jack E. Norland, Mark G. Sullivan, Jerry A. Westfall, Jr., Paula Andersen

United States National Park Service: Publications

Green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) communities are valuable as sources of biological diversity and shelter for livestock in the Northern Great Plains. Excessive use of stands by livestock tends to convert these woodland communities to less valuable shrublands. We monitored 12 green ash stands in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) from 1985 through 1996 to determine changes in species composition, plant density, and canopy coverage in green ash communities that were protected from livestock but exposed to foraging by native ungulates. Over the 12-year sampling period, density of choke cherry (Prunus virginiana L.) and Saskatoon service-berry (Amelanchier …

Energetics And Geometry Of Excitations In Random Systems, Alan Middleton Jul 2000

Energetics And Geometry Of Excitations In Random Systems, Alan Middleton

Physics - All Scholarship

Methods for studying droplets in models with quenched disorder are critically examined. Low energy excitations in two dimensional models are investigated by finding minimal energy interior excitations and by computing the effect of bulk perturbations. The numerical data support the assumptions of compact droplets and a single exponent for droplet energy scaling. Analytic calculations show how strong corrections to power laws can result when samples and droplets are averaged over. Such corrections can explain apparent discrepancies in several previous numerical results for spin glasses

Surface Electronic Phase Transition In Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganese Perovskites: La0.65Sr0.35Mno3, Hani Dulli, E. Ward Plummer, Peter A. Dowben, Jaewu Choi, Sy_Hwang Liou Jul 2000

Surface Electronic Phase Transition In Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganese Perovskites: La0.65Sr0.35Mno3, Hani Dulli, E. Ward Plummer, Peter A. Dowben, Jaewu Choi, Sy_Hwang Liou

Peter Dowben Publications

We have observed a distinct surface phase transition for an important class of giant magnetoresistance materials [La1-x Srx MnO3 (x = 0.35)]. The surface phase transition occurs at 240 K compared to 370 K for the bulk and is fundamentally different. In the bulk, a ferromagnetic metal to paramagnetic bad-metal transition occurs, while the lower-temperature surface transition is from an insulator to a semimetal. The surface of this manganese perovskite is electronically and compositionally quite different from the bulk with important implications for the behavior of artificially grown layered transition-metal oxides and for the use of surface …

Direct Stochastic Equivalent Linearization Of Sdof Smart Mechanical System, L. Duval, Mohammad N. Noori, S. Seelecke Jul 2000

Direct Stochastic Equivalent Linearization Of Sdof Smart Mechanical System, L. Duval, Mohammad N. Noori, S. Seelecke

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

The first and second moments of response variables for SDOF system with pseudoelastic material are obtained by a direct linearization procedure. This procedure is an adaptation of well-known statistical linearization methods, and provides concise, model-independent linearization coefficients. The method can be applied to systems that incorporate any SMA hysteresis model having a differential constitutive equation, and can be used for zero and non-zero mean random vibration. This implementation eliminates the effort of deriving linearization coefficients for new SMA hysteresis model. In this paper the complete statistical response of SDOF system containing a mass and a bar made of SMA is …

Evaluation And Assessment Of Agrichemical Contaminants In The Creighton, Ne Area, Mark E. Burbach, Roy F. Spalding

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Lewis and Clark Natural Resources District (LCNRD) has reported elevated nitrate- nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations in ground water near Creighton, NE. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for NO3-N in public water supplies. NO3-N in the city of Creighton municipal drinking water wells and several rural domestic and irrigation wells have exceeded the MCL. The city of Creighton has constructed a reverse-osmosis water treatment system at a cost of $1.1 million to reduce the NO3-N concentration below the MCL in its water supply. In response to this NO3-N contamination problem the …

Facilitating The Transition From High School To Post-Secondary Education For Students With Learning Disabilities: How Are We Doing?, Sandra Janiga Jul 2000

Facilitating The Transition From High School To Post-Secondary Education For Students With Learning Disabilities: How Are We Doing?, Sandra Janiga

Theses

Federal and New York State (NYS) legislation require that students with disabilities receive services that assist them in the transition from high school to post-secondary life. Students with learning disabilities (LD) who pursue post-secondary education have specific needs. Research shows that transition services must address the following issues: student understanding of his or her disability, student strengths and weaknesses, career decision-making skills, and how to deal with the increased demands of post-secondary education. This study assesses how well transition services are meeting these needs. Seventy- four coordinators of programs for students with disabilities at various NYS colleges completed surveys measuring …

PROVE was held at the USDA-Agricultural Research …

Binding Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Nucleocapsid Protein To Ψ-Rna-Sl3, Michael F. Shubsda, Christopher A. Kirk, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak Jul 2000

Binding Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Nucleocapsid Protein To Ψ-Rna-Sl3, Michael F. Shubsda, Christopher A. Kirk, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak

Chemistry - All Scholarship

The interaction of the nucleocapsid protein NCp7, from the pNL4-3 isolate of HIV-1, with Ψ-RNA-SL3, with the sequence 5’-GGACUAGCGGAGGCUAGUCC, was studied using non-denaturing gel electrophoresis. Two kinds of experiments were performed, using buffered solutions of radiolabeled RNA and unlabeled protein. In the ‘dilution’ experiments, the total RNA concentration, RT, was varied for a series of solutions, but kept equal to the total protein concentration, PT. In the ‘titration’ experiments, solutions having RT constant but with varying PT were analyzed. The solutions were electrophoresed and the autoradiographic spot intensities, proportional to the amounts of the …

Classification Of The Lie Bialgebra Structures On The Witt And Virasoro Algebras, Siu Hung Ng, Earl J. Taft

Faculty Publications

We prove that all the Lie bialgebra structures on the one sided Witt algebra W1, on the Witt algebra W and on the Virasoro algebra V are triangular coboundary Lie bialgebra structures associated to skew-symmetric solutions r of the classical Yang-Baxter equation of the form r = a ∧ b. In particular, for the one-sided Witt algebra W1 = Der k[t] over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero, the Lie bialgebra structures discovered in Michaelis (Adv. Math. 107 (1994) 365-392) and Taft (J. Pure Appl. Algebra 87 (1993) 301-312) are all the Lie bialgebra structures on W1 up …

Ocean Wave Earth Diffraction Antenna (Oweda), Michael C. Kobold Jul 2000

Ocean Wave Earth Diffraction Antenna (Oweda), Michael C. Kobold

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Student Publications

The physical objective is to create, for a time span of about an hour, an antenna reflector with an equivalendti aampeetretrure of about 300 kilometers. as shown in the last part of the introduction. To do this with the convex ocean surface requires useof ocean surface waves. The oweda system determines the surface wave source for a given reflectivity (from a floor slide to ship wakes). The most useful part of the oweda system is coordination of highly data intensive post processingissues involved with transient structural analysis. Transient analysis automation tends to hide details and provide too much data. OWEDA …

A Multiscale, Bayesian And Error-In-Variables Approach For Linear Dynamic Data Rectification, Sridhar Ungarala, Bhavik R. Bakshi Jul 2000

A Multiscale, Bayesian And Error-In-Variables Approach For Linear Dynamic Data Rectification, Sridhar Ungarala, Bhavik R. Bakshi

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A multiscale approach to data rectification is proposed for data containing features with different time and frequency localization. Noisy data are decomposed into contributions at multiple scales and a Bayesian optimization problem is solved to rectify the wavelet coefficients at each scale. A linear dynamic model is used to constrain the optimization problem, which facilitates an error-in variables (EIV) formulation and reconciles all measured variables. Time-scale recursive algorithms are obtained by propagating the prior with temporal and scale models. The multi-scale Kalman filter is a special case of the proposed Bayesian EIV approach.

Burrow Morphology And Behavior Of The Mud Shrimp Upogebia Omissa (Decapoda: Thalassinidea: Upogebiidae), Vania Rodrigues Coelho, Roland Arthur Cooper, Sergio De Almeida Rodrigues

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The burrow morphology, burrowing behavior and feeding mechanisms of the thalassinidean shrimp Upogebia omissa were studied. Twenty burrow casts were made in situ with epoxy resin, and an overall 'Y' shape was most frequently observed. Several burrows consisted of a single, oblique tunnel; burrow diameter was positively correlated with burrow length, maximum depth and distance between openings. Additionally, burrow length was positively associated with maximum depth, indicating that as burrow length increased burrow depth increased; i.e. burrows spread vertically rather than horizontally. Total sediment displacement by the burrows accounted for 2.6 % of sediment to a depth of 30 cm. …
