Hidden Mechanisms Generate Negative Feedbacks In A Stochastic Model: A Comment On Murray, Andrew J. Tyre, Brigitte Tenhumberg Aug 2000

Hidden Mechanisms Generate Negative Feedbacks In A Stochastic Model: A Comment On Murray, Andrew J. Tyre, Brigitte Tenhumberg

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The debate between density-dependent and densityindependent population regulation is one of the oldest and most vociferous in ecology. Australian ecologists participated from the beginning (Nicholson 1933; Andrewartha & Birch 1954). Despite recent efforts to put the debate to rest (Turchin 1995, 1999), there appears little likelihood of either side abandoning the ramparts (Bonsall et al. 1998). Murray (2000; this issue) uses a stochastic simulation model to argue that a significant statistical relationship between birth rate and population size (i.e. density dependence) can arise in the absence of negative feedbacks of population size on fecundity. In this comment we demonstrate that …

Limits On Anomalous Ww Γ And Wwz Couplings From Ww/Wz→Eνjj Production, B. Abbott, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

Limits on anomalous WW γ and WWZ couplings are presented from a study of WW/WZ→eνjj events produced in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. Results from the analysis of data collected using the DØ detector during the 1993–1995 Tevatron collider run at Fermilab are combined with those of an earlier study from the 1992–1993 run. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson yields direct limits on anomalous WW γ and WWZ couplings. With the assumption that the WW γ and WWZ couplings are equal, we obtain -0.34 < λ < 0.36 (with Δk=0) and -0.43< Δk<0.59 (with λ =0) at the 95% confidence level for a form-factor scale Λ = 2.0 TeV.

Molecular-Dynamics Study Of Phase Transitions In Alkali Thiocyanates, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy, R. W. Smith Aug 2000

Molecular-Dynamics Study Of Phase Transitions In Alkali Thiocyanates, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy, R. W. Smith

John R. Hardy Papers

An account is presented of our studies of the order-disorder phase transitions in KSCN, RbSCN, and CsSCN. These are based on parameter-free interionic potentials based on the Gordon-Kim modified electron gas formalism extended to molecular ions. We performed static structural relaxations and supercell molecular dynamics and predicted with reasonable accuracy the temperatures for the onset of the transitions. In particular, we address the question of how the SCN- ions disorder to yield subsequent structural transformations. We found high-temperature phases of average Fm3m symmetry for both KSCN and RbSCN. We argue that in reality the full appearance of …

The Benefits Of Observational Learning On The Mathematics Achievement Of Fourth Grade Students Involved In Peer Tutoring Sessions, Trisha R. Parish

Masters Theses

Many students struggle with mathematical concepts and operations. This leads educators to search for the most effective and efficient means of improving their academic performance. The present investigation sought to determine if a triadic peer-tutoring program would increase the acquisition of basic multiplication facts for fourth grade students. Secondly, this investigation assessed the extent to which students would benefit from observational learning opportunities within the peer tutoring sessions. A multiple baseline design across two peer-tutoring triads was utilized with student performance being assessed by measuring responses to flashcard presentations and completion of three types of mathematics probes. The first type …

E-Commerce Systems: Architecture, Infrastructure, Model, And Development Methodology, A. Bajaj, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The last decade has seen tremendous growth in the world wide web (WWW) (Berners-Lee, Caillau, Luotonen, Nielsen, & Secret, 1994) and e-commerce, which now offers organizations and consumers a unique channel to deliver and purchase goods and services. E-commerce is popularly classified as B2B (business to business), B2C (business to consumer) and C2C (consumer to consumer). B2B e-commerce, which is currently the fastest growing segment of e-commerce (Fellenstein & Wood, 2000), consists of making more efficient the flow of goods and services across organizations. This efficiency is typically increased using standards for electronic data exchange, automating certain processes across organizations …

Service Learning In An Age Of Standards, Terry L. Pickeral, Judy Bray Aug 2000

Service Learning In An Age Of Standards, Terry L. Pickeral, Judy Bray

Service Learning, General

"The new standards have to do with application of basic learning. Students take things that at one time they simply memorized and instead take them into real-life settings. The graduation standards offer the opportunity for every student and teacher to bring learning to a higher level. Application, synthesis, analysis and integration of information are what real learning is all about."

Jim Grimmer, a teacher of philosophy at Richfield High School in Richfield, Minn., articulates one view of the connection between service learning and academic standards. At a time when academic standards, along with assessments and accountability, represent the big-dog reform …

Enhanced Design For Oxy -Fuel Fired Batch Tanks Using Cfd Methods, Guosheng Kang Aug 2000

Enhanced Design For Oxy -Fuel Fired Batch Tanks Using Cfd Methods, Guosheng Kang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oxy-fuel firing is more energy efficient and environment friendly than conventional air-fuel firing and its application for glass melting has begun since 1990. This technology has been advanced for continuous glass melting furnaces based on continued research and application experiences accumulation, while its application in batch tanks is experiencing a transition period. Batch tanks are commonly used by the hand and art glass companies. Compared to continuous furnaces, a batch tank has smaller size and higher operation temperature. The four primary concerns in the application of oxy-fuel firing in batch tanks are (1) The high flame temperature of oxy-fuel firing …

Symmetrically Continuous Functions, Marcin Szyszkowski Aug 2000

Symmetrically Continuous Functions, Marcin Szyszkowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This work is devoted entirely to symmetric continuity and consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2, based on the paper [Sz2], is the main part of this work. In this chapter we generalize classic theorems on functions defined on the intervals to functions defined on arbitrary subsets of the real line. Chapter 3 deals with a weaker condition than symmetric continuity---weak symmetric continuity. It is an extended version of my paper [Sz1]. Chapter 4 is based on the paper [CSz]. Here it is shown that symmetrically continuous functions, although being "close" to continuous functions, may not …

Alteration Processes Of Alkenones And Related Lipids In Water Columns And Sediments, H. Rodger Harvey

OES Faculty Publications

Alkenones produced by the haptophyte algae are currently being used as indices of sea surface temperature in recent and past ocean environments, but limited information is available concerning the impact of biotic and abiotic processes on the integrity of these long chain lipids. This synthesis provides selected background information on major alteration processes that must be considered before such indices can be used with confidence. A number of processes in the water column and surface sediments have the potential to impact the structural integrity of alkenones and compromise their ability as temperature markers. Processes discussed include the alteration of alkenone …

A Meta-Analysis On Relationship Modeling Accuracy: Comparing Relational And Semantic Models, Qing Cao, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic data modeling, such as entity-relationship (ER) modeling and extended/enhanced entity-relationship (EER) modeling, has emerged as an alternative to relational data modeling. The majority of research in data modeling suggests that the use of semantic data models leads to better performance. However the findings are not conclusive and sometimes inconsistent. In this research, we investigate modeling relationship correctness in relational and semantic models. The meta-analysis carried out in this research is an attempt to alleviate inconsistent results in previous studies.

Distributed Arithmetic Implementation Of Multivariable Controllers For Smart Structural Systems, Lingfeng Yuan, Sridhar Sana, Hardy J. Pottinger, Vittal S. Rao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Smart structural systems require the electronic control systems which are integrated into the structures to be small, lightweight and power-efficient. The field programmable gate array (FPGA) is a good platform to implement such controllers. In our previous work, FPGA-based digital controllers were built and tested on a simple structural system. In order to implement multivariable controllers, the hardware resources for FPGA-based architecture need to be further reduced. Distributed arithmetic (DA) has long been proven to be a very efficient means to mechanize computations that are dominated by inner products involving constant multiplicand. The computational requirements of the smart structural controllers …

High Efficiency Separation Of Microbial Aggregates Using Capillary Electrophoresis, J. M. Schneiderheinze, Daniel W. Armstrong, G. Schulte, David J. Westenberg

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent advances in the technique of capillary electrophoresis have demonstrated fast, highly efficient separation of mixtures of intact microbes. This paper describes the application of this technique for the separation of microbial aggregates of Micrococcus luteus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or Alcaligenes faecalis. The aggregates of these microbes were resolved into several highly efficient peaks with analysis times under 10 min and efficiencies approaching 1 000 000 plates m-1 in some cases. A reproducible relationship was found between the electrophoretic mobility and the aggregation number or size of the cluster under a given set of experimental conditions. Often, cellular aggregation was reversible …

Assessment And Grading Practices Among High School Band Teachers In The United States: A Descriptive Study, Edward G. Simanton Aug 2000

Assessment And Grading Practices Among High School Band Teachers In The United States: A Descriptive Study, Edward G. Simanton

Theses and Dissertations

The recent movement in academic reform and accountability has brought assessment and grading to the forefront in most academic disciplines. While assessment and grading appear to be important topics in music education professional journals, little is known about actual practice or local satisfaction with current practices. Findings from a few small regional assessment and grading studies indicated that assessment practices tended to diverge from currently understood best practices; for example, attendance was the primary source of grading information.

The purposes of this study were to (a) examine current assessment and grading practices in American high school bands, (b) gauge local …

Telemip: Telecommunications-Enhanced Mobile Ip Architecture For Fast Intradomain Mobility, Subir Das, Archan Misra, Prathima Agrawal, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This article first surveys existing protocols for supporting IP mobility and then proposes an extension to the mobile IP architecture, called TeleMIP. Our architecture attempts to achieve smaller handoff latency by localizing the scope of most location update messages within an administrative domain or a geographical region. TeleMIP is intended for use in evolving third-generation wireless networks, and introduces a new logical entity, called the mobility agent, which provides a mobile node with a stable point of attachment in a foreign network. While the MA is functionally similar to conventional foreign agents, it is located at a higher level in …

How To Compute Equilibrium Prices In 1891, William C. Brainard, Herbert E. Scarf Aug 2000

How To Compute Equilibrium Prices In 1891, William C. Brainard, Herbert E. Scarf

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Irving Fisher’s Ph.D. thesis, submitted to Yale University in 1891, contains a fully articulated general equilibrium model presented with the broad scope and formal mathematical clarity associated with Walras and his successors. In addition, Fisher presents a remarkable hydraulic apparatus for calculating equilibrium prices and the resulting distribution of society’s endowments among the agents in the economy. In this paper we provide an analytical description of Fisher’s apparatus, and report the results of simulating the mechanical/hydraulic “machine,” illustrating the ability of the apparatus to “compute” equilibrium prices and also to find multiple equilibria.

Relationship Between Cutting Parameters And Bit Geometry In Rotary Cutting, Srikanth Addala Aug 2000

Relationship Between Cutting Parameters And Bit Geometry In Rotary Cutting, Srikanth Addala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The main objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between cutting parameters (cutting force, penetration force, specific energy, specific respirable dust) and the bit geometry parameters (angle of the bit tip, bit tip size and shape of the bit) in order to reduce the amount of specific respirable dust generated and the specific energy consumed in rotary cutting. In the cutting process when two grooves are made in the rock at certain spacing, a land/ridge is formed between the two adjacent grooves. If that land/ridge can be removed in a cutting cycle, then a clean surface will be …

Effects Of Plant Flavonoids On The Fate Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Rhizosphere Soil, Xiujin Qui Aug 2000

Effects Of Plant Flavonoids On The Fate Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Rhizosphere Soil, Xiujin Qui

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

High-molecular-weight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent in the environment although a wide variety of microorganisms can metabolize PAHs. In the past decades, laboratory and filed studies have shown that PAH degradation in soil is often limited by poor bioavailability and oxygen availability. Bound residue formation of PAHs with macromolecules of soil organic matter is an important fate mechanism. More recently, phytoremediation for PAH-contaminated soils is being explored. It is believed that PAH degradation may be enhanced in rhizosphere soil due to the improved aeration condition and the active soil microbial community sustained by root exudates. Whether certain root exudates …

Fine-Scale Modeling Of Failure In An Adhesive Layer, Pulkit V. D. Mathur Aug 2000

Fine-Scale Modeling Of Failure In An Adhesive Layer, Pulkit V. D. Mathur

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rigid ceramic filter media are used for removing particulate matter from gas streams at high temperatures. As the particulate matter (dust cake) collects on the surface of the filter, the filtration pressure increases; to maintain an economical operation the dust cake must be removed periodically by back-pulse cleaning. Often the dust cake is not removed completely by the back-pulse pressure and the resulting patchy cleaning affects operation.;The thesis presents the results from a fine scale modeling of the removal of a layer of filter cake by a time dependent pressure pulse. In this model the filter cake is grid in …
