On Thermal Buckling Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega Aug 2000

On Thermal Buckling Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The behavior of uniformly heated plates is considered for the situation where a patch is adhered over a region of the structure. A variational formulation results in a self-consistent set of equations and conditions, which governs the response of the system. The nonlinear problems are solved analytically, yielding exact results within the context of the mathematical model employed. A stability criterion is established for the class of problems considered, based on the second variation of the potential energy of the composite structure, and issues of stability are assessed in this context. Three non-dimensional parameters that characterize the response of the …

Total Cross Sections For Dissociative Electron Attachment In Dichloroalkanes And Selected Polychloroalkanes: The Correlation With Vertical Attachment Energies, Kayvan Aflatooni, Paul Burrow Aug 2000

Total Cross Sections For Dissociative Electron Attachment In Dichloroalkanes And Selected Polychloroalkanes: The Correlation With Vertical Attachment Energies, Kayvan Aflatooni, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

Electron attachment into the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of a typical polychloroalkane in the gas phase forms a temporary negative ion in which the impinging electron resides on a combination of local C–Cl σ* orbitals. Because of the antibonding character of these orbitals, these anions may dissociate, producing Cl- with cross sections that vary enormously over the chloroalkane family. In this work, we present absolute total dissociative electron attachment (DEA) cross sections for 33 of these compounds, and we show that the peak values of the cross sections correlate strongly with the vertical attachment energies (VAEs) for formation of …

Ness: Using A Microsatellite To Search For And Track Satellites And Asteroids, Kieran Carroll, Alan Hildebrand, David Balam, Jaymie Matthews Aug 2000

Ness: Using A Microsatellite To Search For And Track Satellites And Asteroids, Kieran Carroll, Alan Hildebrand, David Balam, Jaymie Matthews

Small Satellite Conference

The Near Earth Space Surveillance (NESS) mission is being developed by Dynacon and a team of asteroid scientists, supported by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). NESS uses a single satellite to perform a dual mission: searching for an tracking Earth-approaching asteroids, and tracking satellites in Earth orbit. There are aspects of both of these activities that are best accomplished using an orbiting observatory. The concept presented here is to implement NESS using a small imaging telescope mounted on a lowcost microsatellite-class platform, based on the design developed for the MOST stellar photometry …

Texas Gains On Naep: Points Of Light?, Gregory Camilli Aug 2000

Texas Gains On Naep: Points Of Light?, Gregory Camilli

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The 1992-1996 gain in mathematics scores on NAEP from 4th to 8th grades in Texas is placed in perspective. The "miracle" in Texas looks much like the median elsewhere. Of 35 states and two districts (Guam and D.C.), the 52-point gain of Texas was good enough to earn Texas a rank of 17th or about the 46th percentile. Taking into consideration the wealth of states, Texas stands in the middle of the pack - no worse than most other states in delivering educational services to students.

Consistency Of Findings Across International Surveys Of Mathematics And Science Achievement: A Comparison Of Iaep2 And Timss, Michael O'Leary, Thomas Kellaghan, George F. Madaus, Albert F. Beaton

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The investigation reported in here was prompted by discrepancies between the performance of Irish students on two international tests of science achievement: the Second International Assessment of Educational Progress (IAEP2) administered in 1991 and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) administered in 1995. While average science achievement for Irish 13-year-olds was reported to be at the low end of the distribution representing the 20 participating countries in IAEP2, it was around the middle of the distribution representing the 40 or so countries that participated in TIMSS at grades 7 and 8. An examination of the effect sizes associated …

Canonical Quantum Gravity In The Vassiliev Invariants Arena: Ii. Constraints, Habitats And Consistency Of The Constraint Algebra, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin Aug 2000

Canonical Quantum Gravity In The Vassiliev Invariants Arena: Ii. Constraints, Habitats And Consistency Of The Constraint Algebra, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

In a companion paper we introduced a kinematical arena for the discussion of the constraints of canonical quantum gravity in the spin network representation based on Vassiliev invariants. In this paper we introduce the Hamiltonian constraint, extend the space of states to non-diffeomorphism-invariant 'habitats' and check that the off-shell quantum constraint commutator algebra reproduces the classical Poisson algebra of constraints of general relativity without anomalies. One can therefore consider the resulting set of constraints and space of states as a consistent theory of canonical quantum gravity.

Low-Mass Spectroscopic Binaries In The Hyades: A Candidate Brown Dwarf Companion, I. Neill Reid, S. Mahoney Aug 2000

Low-Mass Spectroscopic Binaries In The Hyades: A Candidate Brown Dwarf Companion, I. Neill Reid, S. Mahoney

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have used the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope to obtain high-resolution spectroscopy of 51 late-type M dwarfs in the Hyades cluster. Cross-correlating the calibrated data against spectra of white dwarfs allows us to determine heliocentric velocities with an accuracy of ±0.3 km s−1. 27 stars were observed at two epochs in 1997; two stars, RHy 42 and RHy 403, are confirmed spectroscopic binaries. RHy 42 is a double-lined, equal-mass system; RHy 403 is a single-lined, short-period binary, P∼1.275 d. RHy 403A has an absolute magnitude of MI=10.85, consistent with a mass …

Gregory Snow Publications

The result of a search for gaugino pair production with a trilepton signature is reinterpreted in the framework of minimal supergravity (MSUGRA) with R-parity violation via leptonic λ Yukawa couplings. The search used 95 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded by the DO. detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A large domain of the MSUGRA parameter space is excluded for λ121, λ122>10-4.

Making The Transition From Special To Academic Librarianship, Philip Barnett Aug 2000

Making The Transition From Special To Academic Librarianship, Philip Barnett

Publications and Research

The transition from working in either a special library or corporate information center to an academic library requires some adjustments. The least adjustment is the change from chemical information specialist to chemistry librarian in a dedicated chemistry library primarily used by advanced chemistry students and chemistry faculty. Most librarians, however, must either serve in multidisciplinary science libraries, or become science specialists in single campus libraries. In such situations librarians may face new responsibilities. Generally, librarians teach more in academic libraries, often to novice library users. They may teach credit bearing chemical information courses. Some academic librarian positions carry faculty rank …

The Myth Of The Texas Miracle In Education, Walt Haney Aug 2000

The Myth Of The Texas Miracle In Education, Walt Haney

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

I summarize the recent history of education reform and statewide testing in Texas, which led to introduction of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) in 1990-91. A variety of evidence in the late 1990s led a number of observers to conclude that the state of Texas had made near miraculous progress in reducing dropouts and increasing achievement. The passing scores on TAAS tests were arbitrary and discriminatory. Analyses comparing TAAS reading, writing and math scores with one another and with relevant high school grades raise doubts about the reliability and validity of TAAS scores. ...

Determination Of The Intraparticle Electroosmotic Volumetric Flow-Rate, Velocity And Peclet Number In Capillary Electrochromatography From Pore Network Theory, B. A. Grimes, J. J. Meyers, Athanasios I. Liapis Aug 2000

Determination Of The Intraparticle Electroosmotic Volumetric Flow-Rate, Velocity And Peclet Number In Capillary Electrochromatography From Pore Network Theory, B. A. Grimes, J. J. Meyers, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results obtained from the pore network model employed in this work, clearly show that the magnitudes of the intraparticle electroosmotic volumetric flowrate, Q(intrap), and velocity, < v (intrap,x) >, in the pores of the charged porous silica particles considered in this study are greater than zero. The intraparticle Peclet number, Pe(intra), of a solute in these charged porous silica particles would be greater than zero, and, in fact, the magnitude of the intraparticle Peclet number, Pe(intrap), of lysozyme is greater than unity for all the values of the pore connectivity, n(T), of the intraparticle pores and of the applied electric potential difference …

The Phonology And Morphology Of The Tanacross Athabaskan Language, Gary Holton Aug 2000

The Phonology And Morphology Of The Tanacross Athabaskan Language, Gary Holton

Alaska Native Language Center Faculty

This dissertation presents a linguistic description of the phonology and morphology of Tanacross Athabaskan, an endangered language spoken by approximately sixty persons in eastern interior Alaska. There is little extant documentation of Tanacross; hence, this description is based primarily on data gathered from first-hand field work. Tanacross is typical of the Athabaskan family in its typological characteristics. There is a relatively small phonemic inventory, and most of the phonemic contrasts are neutralized outside the stem-syllable onset position. The lexicon is relatively small, consisting of perhaps six thousand distinct morphemes. Noun morphology is relatively straightforward, with few active morphological processes. In …

Benzene As An Indoor Air Pollutant In Fairbanks, Alaska, Janet Elaine Ricker Aug 2000

Benzene As An Indoor Air Pollutant In Fairbanks, Alaska, Janet Elaine Ricker

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Benzene is a known carcinogen found in gasoline, automobile exhaust, cigarette smoke, and organic solvents. Previous studies suggest that sources of chemicals within the home are the major factors influencing personal exposure to benzene. Indoor air was sampled for benzene in order to determine the concentrations present in Fairbanks homes, and to indentify what factors might be associated with higher concentrations. Sampling sites were limited to homes with attached garages and with no smokers in the household. A wide range of benzene concentrations was observed in the eight homes sampled. The highest concentration was about 70 ppbv, and the concentration …

Chemo-Ecological And Evolutionary Aspects Of The Pollinator Reward System In Clusia Grandiflora (Clusiaceae), John Lokvam Aug 2000

Chemo-Ecological And Evolutionary Aspects Of The Pollinator Reward System In Clusia Grandiflora (Clusiaceae), John Lokvam

Agriculture and Horticulture

The dioecious, neotropical plant species Clusia grandiflora produces two major pools of secondary metabolites, latex and floral resin. Latex serves as a defense against herbivory and floral resin as a pollinator reward. This reward is gathered by bees who use it as a nest construction material. Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectral studies show that C. grandiflora latex and resin share two classes of compounds, poly-isoprenylated benzophenones and tocotrienoic acids as major or minor components. The close chemical correspondence between latex and resin indicate that they are evolutionarily related. Though the tocotrienes were not found to have biological activity, benzophenones …

Nondestructive Single-Photon Trigger, John C. Howell, John A. Yeazell Aug 2000

Nondestructive Single-Photon Trigger, John C. Howell, John A. Yeazell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A triggering device sensitive to a single photon is discussed. It is based on a balanced quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement proposed by Chuang and Yamamoto [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4281 (1996)]. The balanced measurement measures the total photon number and obtains no which-path/mode information. Hence, the timing of the photon can be determined without destroying its wave function or entangling the probe field. This could have extensive use in the realization of long-distance quantum communications systems.

Temporal Patterns Of Migration, Molt, And Fat Storage Among High-Latitude Passerine Migrants, Anna-Marie Benson Aug 2000

Temporal Patterns Of Migration, Molt, And Fat Storage Among High-Latitude Passerine Migrants, Anna-Marie Benson

Biological Sciences

Aspects of migration, fattening, and molt in trans-continental passerine migrants were examined during spring and autumn migration in Fairbanks, Alaska (64°50’ N, 147°50’ W). From 1992-1998, 25,718 birds of 18 species were banded. Based on median dates of spring and autumn passage, species-level estimates of the duration of breeding range occupation ranged from 48 to 129 days. Adults departed significantly later than immatures in 11 of the 18 species examined and significantly earlier than immatures in only one species, the Alder Flycatcher. Adults had significantly higher fat scores than immatures in most species, but these differences were attributable to the …

Design And Implementation Of A Motor Controller For A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine, Jerias Mitchell Aug 2000

Design And Implementation Of A Motor Controller For A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine, Jerias Mitchell

Engineering

This thesis describes the design and implementation of a motor controller for use with a prototype Axial-Gap Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machine (AGPMSM). The goal of this work is to design a controller to drive an AGPMSM "smart wheel" that will be used in a semiautonomous vehicle. Controllers in this application are typically vector or scalar controllers using a form of Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) sinusoidal control. These types of controllers allow an AC machine to behave as a DC machine, which greatly simplifies the control algorithms and eliminates the need to operate the machine as an induction motor to achieve the …

Study Of The Performance Of A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Christopher Lee Morgan Aug 2000

Study Of The Performance Of A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Christopher Lee Morgan

Engineering

As fossil fuels become scarce, finding new sources of efficient, reliable, and renewable power generation is critical. One device being given lots of attention for this purpose is a fuel cell. Fuel cells not only produce electricity, but also heat which can be recovered for residential use and increase the overall system efficiency. Test benches were constructed to measure and record data from fuel cells under a range of electrical loads. Energy balance was constructed to characterize the fuel cell system using experimental data. The energy balance resulted in a first law gross electrical efficiency of over 44 percent and …

Meteor Wind Wave Analysis Of Superdarn Observations, Wei Dai Aug 2000

Meteor Wind Wave Analysis Of Superdarn Observations, Wei Dai

Engineering

SuperDARN is an extensive array of radars located in both the northern and southern Auroral regions. The array has been used to study plasma convection in the high-latitude ionosphere. A recent study shows that it can also be used to observe the characteristics of the high latitude mesophere-lower-thermosphere (MLR) region. In this region, noise-like echoes, which show totally different properties from the E or F region irregularities, were paid particular interest in recent studies. The echoes are considered to be due to scatter from meteor trails. In this thesis, an algorithm was designed to extract meteor echoes from the SuperDARN …

Molecular Evolution Of Martens (Genus Martes), Karen Denise Stone Aug 2000

Molecular Evolution Of Martens (Genus Martes), Karen Denise Stone

Biological Sciences

Molecular studies provide the opportunity to re-evaluate and further investigate hypotheses such as those related to phylogenetic relationships, inter- and intra-continental colonizations, population differentiation, and the dynamics of hybrid zones. Three sets of molecular markers, nuclear and mitochondrial, were used to examine phylogenetic relationships among species within a holarctically distributed genus (Martes), and intraspecific diversification and population differentiation within American marten (Martes americana). In American marten, two morphological groups ('americana' and 'caurina') have been recognized, though the level of distinctiveness between them has been debated. My data supported the fossil record's indication that early radiations gave rise to two subgenera …

Neuroendocrine Control Of Song In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Stephanie Marie Dloniak Aug 2000

Neuroendocrine Control Of Song In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Stephanie Marie Dloniak

Biological Sciences

This dissertation includes three discrete projects addressing various aspects of the neuroendocrine control of song in the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), a migratory songbird. Specifically, the roles of testosterone, photoperiodic condition, opioids, and age were investigated with respect to song production and neural plasticity in the regions of the brain that control song (vocal control regions, VCRs)." The author "found that, in males photoperiodic condition and testosterone interact to regulate seasonal VCR volume plasticity, whereas testosterone alone controls song production. The opioid system is probably not involved in VCR plasticity or song production, but is indicated to play a role …

Phylogeography And Population Genetics Of Northern Flying Squirrels (Glaucomys Sabrinus) In Southeast Alaska, Allison Lynn Bidlack Aug 2000

Phylogeography And Population Genetics Of Northern Flying Squirrels (Glaucomys Sabrinus) In Southeast Alaska, Allison Lynn Bidlack

Biological Sciences

The Prince of Wales flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus griseifrons), a forest associated species, is endemic to several islands in the Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska. Mitochondrial and nuclear markers were examined to assess the genetic uniqueness of this subspecies and its geographic extent and to investigate gene flow among island and mainland populations of flying squirrels. Data from both sets of markers are congruent, and agree with the subspecific designation. The data also indicate that the Prince of Wales subspecies is isolated from other populations in Southeast Alaska, but that there may be gene flow among islands on which it …
