The Effect Of Anode Thickness In Sofcs With Anode Supported Ysz Film, Yi-Huang Zhang, Yi Jiang, Zi-Gui Lu, Yong-Lai Dong, Jing-Wang Yan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Solid oxide fuel cells with supported yttria stabilized zirconia electrolyte films on anode substrates of various thickness have been fabricated. The electrochemical performances of the SOFCs have been examined. The results showed that the cell performance was limited by the anodic overpotential, which is caused mainly by a concentration polarization when the anode substrate is thick. The anodic overpotential was reduced obviously as the thickness of anode substrate was decreased. As a result, the performance of the SOFC cell was improved. With a 0.5 mm anode substrate, a SOFC cell produced a power density about 0.19 W/cm2 at 800 …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Research and development on low platinum loading electrode is very important in reducing the cost of proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) stack. This paper has put forward a new method to prepare the electrode of PEMFC. The pore forming substances were used in this methd. The low platinum loading electrodes (0.02 mgPt⋅cm-2) have already been prepared with the method. Compared with the traditional method, the new method is simple, cheep, and easy to scale up. The superior composition of the electrodes is catalyst: pore forming substance: Nafion= 3:3:1. The performance of a single cell using this …

Design And Test Of An Economical Cold Gas Propulsion System, Joseph Cardin, Jesus Acosta Aug 2000

Design And Test Of An Economical Cold Gas Propulsion System, Joseph Cardin, Jesus Acosta

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites are emerging as the preferred platform for a wide variety of earth orbit and even interplanetary missions. These spacecraft are, by their very nature, extremely limited in budget, volume, mass and power. Existing fluid propulsion options are too large, costly and complex for many small satellite applications. In an attempt to address this problem VACCO has produced an inexpensive, modular system specifically designed for the special needs of small satellites. This paper documents the results of a development program conducted for NASA and administered by the Applied Physics Laboratory of John Hopkins University. The Cold Gas Propulsion System …

This paper presents a low-cost microspacecraft platform concept for missions which require high D-v capabilities of up to about 1,500 m/s, using auxiliary launch opportunities, e.g., from the Ariane 5 ASAP. The proposed concept is extremely flexible and can be adapted to specific mission requirements, thus permitting low-cost missions to Earth orbit, as well as to the Moon, Mars, and selected asteroids. A particular focus of this paper is on the modularity of the proposed concept, including the bipropellant propulsion system needed to provide the required D-v, the lightweight structural concept, and the 3-axis attitude determination and control system (ADCS), …

Bounded Point Evaluations And Local Spectral Theory, Abdellatif Bourhim

Mathematics - All Scholarship

We study in this paper the concept of bounded point evaluations for cyclic operators. We give a negative answer to a question of L.R. Williams Dynamic Systems and Apllications 3(1994) 103-112. Furthermore, we generalize some results of Williams and give a simple proof of theorem 2.5 of L.R. Williams (The Local Spectra of Pure Quasinormal Operators J. Math. anal. Appl. 187(1994) 842-850) that non normal hyponormal weighted shifts have fat local spectra.

Autonomous Operations Experiments For The Distributed Emerald Nanosatellite Mission , Christopher Kitts, Michael Swartwout Aug 2000

Autonomous Operations Experiments For The Distributed Emerald Nanosatellite Mission , Christopher Kitts, Michael Swartwout

Small Satellite Conference

Distributed space systems are often cited as a means of enabling vast performance increases ranging from enhanced mission capabilities to increased system flexibility. Achieving this vision, however, will require radical advances in the automated control of these multi-satellite systems. To explore this challenge, Santa Clara University and Stanford University have initiated development of a simple, low cost, two-satellite mission known as Emerald. The Emerald mission includes several experiments involving the autonomous operation of distributed space systems. First, “low-level” inter-satellite navigation techniques will be explored. Second, “high-level” multi-satellite health and command management functions will be demonstrated. Due to operational considerations and …

The Jawsat Mission: Final Report And Lessons Learned , J. Smith, D. Richards, M. Wood, G. Sharp, W. Clapp

Small Satellite Conference

One Stop Satellite Solutions and the Center for Aerospace Technology recently completed the JAWSAT mission. This was the first flight of the Minotaur launch vehicle and the first time eleven separate micro and pico satellites were placed into orbit with one launch. The JAWSAT project required both new technical designs as well as new programmatic ways of conducting a space mission. Main stream, large satellite, methods were not adequate. Technical lessons learned on this project range from new techniques in versatile, low-cost, structural design to a reasonable method of qualifying commercial off-theshelf electronic components. New methods of final integration and …

Real-Time Attitude And Orbit Control System Of A Small Leo Satellite With Parallel-Processing Approach In A Ground Station, Roger Johnson, Sanjay Jayaram, Lei Sun, Chan Ho Ham Aug 2000

Real-Time Attitude And Orbit Control System Of A Small Leo Satellite With Parallel-Processing Approach In A Ground Station, Roger Johnson, Sanjay Jayaram, Lei Sun, Chan Ho Ham

Small Satellite Conference

A Real-time Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) using a parallel processing approach will be implemented using a Satellite Ground Control Station (SGCS). With this approach, the satellite will collect platform (attitude reference) and payload measurements (at 1Hz) over several orbits and down-link to the SGCS (at 5 KHz) where the real-time filtering, fault detection, diagnosis and corrective (if needed) control is generated. The control commands are up-linked to the satellite before losing telemetry lock. A substantial reduction in on-board computation can provide a cheaper and a higher reliable AOCS. In the proposed scheme, an advanced real-time estimation and control …

Exploring The Structure Of A Possible Light Scalar Nonet, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz Aug 2000

Exploring The Structure Of A Possible Light Scalar Nonet, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz

Physics - All Scholarship

We first review the work of the Syracuse group, which uses an effective chiral Lagrangian approach, on meson-meson scattering. An illustration providing evidence for the existence of a strange scalar resonance of mass around 900 MeV is given. An attempt to fit this \kappa (900) together with a similarly obtained \sigma (560) and the well known a_0(980) and f_0(980) into a nonet pattern suggests that the underlying structure is closer to a dual quark-dual antiquark than to a quark-antiquark. A possible mechanism to explain a next higher-in mass scalar meson nonet is also discussed. This involves mixing between q{\bar q} …

Microsatellites And Improved Acquisition Of Space Systems, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Drew Cox Aug 2000

Microsatellites And Improved Acquisition Of Space Systems, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Drew Cox

Small Satellite Conference

Traditional Department of Defense (DoD) practices in the acquisition of space systems have focused on advanced versions of proven technology, meaning large satellites. This paradigm contributes to dependence on a handful of satellites, program schedules measured in decades, and the expensive oversight and program management functions which must be applied to systems which, since there are so few assets, cannot countenance failures. The escape from this paradigm is offered by Microsatellites (Microsats). Microsats are not only useful technology, but technology which enables a different approach to acquisition. What the authors call the Microsat Acquisition Paradigm (MAP) is partly modeled on …
