Predicting The Local Dynamics Of Epizootic Rabies Among Raccoons In The United States, James E. Childs, Aaron T. Curns, Meghan E. Dey, Leslie A. Real, Lisa Feinstein, Ottar N. Bjørnstad, John W. Krebs Dec 2000

Predicting The Local Dynamics Of Epizootic Rabies Among Raccoons In The United States, James E. Childs, Aaron T. Curns, Meghan E. Dey, Leslie A. Real, Lisa Feinstein, Ottar N. Bjørnstad, John W. Krebs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Mathematical models have been developed to explore the population dynamics of viral diseases among wildlife. However, assessing the predictions stemming from these models with wildlife databases adequate in size and temporal duration is uncommon. An epizootic of raccoon rabies that began in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States in the late 1970s has developed into one of the largest and most extensive in the history of wildlife rabies. We analyzed the dynamics of local epizootics at the county level by examining a database spanning more than 20 years and including 35,387 rabid raccoons. The size, number, and periodicity of …

Low-Frequency Crossover Of The Fractional Power-Law Conductivity In Srruo3, J. S. Dodge, Christopher P. Weber, J. Corson, J. Orenstein, Z. Schlesinger, J. W. Reiner, M. R. Beasley Dec 2000

Low-Frequency Crossover Of The Fractional Power-Law Conductivity In Srruo3, J. S. Dodge, Christopher P. Weber, J. Corson, J. Orenstein, Z. Schlesinger, J. W. Reiner, M. R. Beasley

Physics

We combine the results of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy with far-infrared transmission and reflectivity to obtain the conductivity of SrRuO 3 over an unprecedented continuous range in frequency, allowing us to characterize the approach to zero frequency as a function of temperature. We show that the conductivity follows a simple phenomenological form, with an analytic structure fundamentally different from that predicted by the standard theory of metals.

Ga-Doped Zno Films Grown On Gan Templates By Plasma-Assisted Molecular-Beam Epitaxy, H. J. Ko, Yanfang Chen, S. K. Hong, H. Wenisch, T. Yao, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

We have investigated the structural and optical properties of Ga-doped ZnO films grown on GaN templates by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. The carrier concentration in Ga-doped ZnO films can be controlled from 1.33×1018/cm3 to 1.13×1020/cm3. Despite high Ga incorporation, the linewidth of (0002) ω-rocking curves of Ga-doped ZnO films still lies in the range from 5 to 15 arc min. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Ga-doped ZnO films show dominant near-bandedge emission with negligibly weak deep-level emission, independent of carrier concentration. The PL spectrum exhibits a new emission line at 3.358 eV, which corresponds to …

Measurement Of The W Boson Mass Using Large Rapidity Electrons, B. Abbott, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Dec 2000

Measurement Of The W Boson Mass Using Large Rapidity Electrons, B. Abbott, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

We present a measurement of the W boson mass using data collected by the DØ. experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1994–1995. We identify W bosons by their decays to en final states where the electron is detected in a forward calorimeter. We extract the W boson mass MW by fitting the transverse mass and transverse electron and neutrino momentum spectra from a sample of 11 089 W→eν decay candidates. We use a sample of 1687 dielectron events, mostly due toZ→ee decays, to constrain our model of the detector response. Using the forward …

A Desktop Universe For The Introductory Astronomy Laboratory, Laurence A. Marschall, Glenn A. Snyder, Paul Richard Cooper

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

What is a well-intentioned astronomy instructor to do? There is no argument that experience with the real world is desirable in any astronomy course, especially the introductory classes that fulfill the science distribution requirements at many colleges and universities. Though it is a simple matter to take students out of doors, show them the motions of the Sun, Moon, and stars, and have them squint for a few seconds at Saturn's rings through a telescope, these activities represent only a small portion of the subject matter of modern astronomy. It is simply not possible, given the constraints of time, weather, …

An Automated Oracle For Verifying Gui Objects, Juichi Takahashi Dec 2000

An Automated Oracle For Verifying Gui Objects, Juichi Takahashi

Theses and Dissertations

The promise of test automation - the automatic application of software inputs to find bugs - is tempered by the difficulty of automatically verifying behavior. Indeed, the lack of tools for behavior verification is a major factor in keeping automated testing out of the mainstream. This thesis develops a technique that aids automatic behavior verification for a particularly difficult problem: determining the correction of screen output. A methodology to capture and compare screen output is presented and a case study using Microsoft ® PowerPoint ® is described.

Infrared Spectroscopy Of Symbiotic Stars. Ii. Orbits For Five S-Type Systems With Two-Year Periods, Francis C. Fekel, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Richard Joyce, Michael F. Skrutskie Dec 2000

Infrared Spectroscopy Of Symbiotic Stars. Ii. Orbits For Five S-Type Systems With Two-Year Periods, Francis C. Fekel, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Richard Joyce, Michael F. Skrutskie

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Infrared radial velocities have been used to determine orbital elements for the cool giants of five well-known symbiotic systems, Z And, AG Dra, V443 Her, AX Per, and FG Ser, all of which have orbital periods near the two-year mean period for S-type symbiotics. The new orbits are in general agreement with previous orbits derived from optical velocities. From the combined optical and infrared velocities, improved orbital elements for the five systems have been determined. Each of the orbital periods has been determined solely from the radial-velocity data. The orbits are circular and have quite small mass functions of 0.001–0.03 …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xviii. Sorting Out The Variability Of Hd 95559 And Gliese 410=Ds Leonis, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have obtained spectroscopy and photometry of HD 95559 and photometry of Gliese 410=DS Leonis. HD 95559 consists of a pair of essentially identical K1 V stars, whose orbital period we refine to 1.52599775+/-0.00000104 days. The system is photometrically variable with a mean period of 1.5264+/-0.0003 days. Despite minimum masses greater than 0.8 Msolar for each component, a search for eclipses proved negative. The lithium abundances of the components of HD 95559 indicate that the system is younger than the Hyades cluster, and its components may even have just arrived on the zero-age main sequence. Gl 410=DS Leo is also …

Preliminary Assessment Of Client Interest In And Needs Of The New England Environmental Finance Center, New England Environmental Finance Center, University Of Southern Maine

Planning

The New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC) has been conceived as a knowledge-based clearinghouse, training, and change-agent program aimed at helping EPA's constituencies find financially successful approaches to environmental improvements. The NE/EFC will develop approaches to needs of particular priority in New England and potentially useful throughout the nation; share such approaches through the EFC national network; and help make tools from that network accessible throughout New England. In 1999 we began exploring with potential users how this ninth of the nation's EFCs might best address the region's needs. The assessment continued through the Muskie School's EFC proposal to EPA …

Normal Forms, Canonical Forms, And Invariants Of Single Input Nonlinear Systems Under Feedback, Issa Amadou Tall, Witold Respondek Dec 2000

Normal Forms, Canonical Forms, And Invariants Of Single Input Nonlinear Systems Under Feedback, Issa Amadou Tall, Witold Respondek

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

We study the feedback group action on single-input nonlinear control systems. We follow an approach of Kang and Krener based on analysing, step by step, the action of homogeneous transformations on the homogeneous part of the system. We construct a dual normal form and dual invariants with respect to those obtained by Kang. We also propose a canonical form and show that two systems are equivalent via a formal feedback if and only if their canonical forms coincide. We give an explicit construction of transformations bringing the system to its normal, dual normal, and canonical form.

Extended Water Quality Monitoring Of The Lincoln Lake Watershed, Paul F. Vendrell, K. F. Steele, M. A. Nelson, L. W. Cash, R. W. Ncnew

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

For seven years, the Lincoln Lake (Moores Creek and Beatty Branch) watershed was monitored for improvements in water quality resulting from agricultural best management practices (BMP) implemented to reduce nutrient transport. During the first three years of monitoring (1991 to 1994), nitrogen transport declined significantly (Edwards et al., 1994, 1996, and 1997) under both base and storm flow conditions. This decline in nitrogen transport was again observed in the three-year period following 1994 (Vendrell et al. 1998). This monitoring effort has demonstrated that water quality bas improved in the Lincoln Lake watershed. However, since the nitrogen transport continued to decline …

A Case For The Place Of Music In The Outdoor Education Program, Marie Bernardy Dec 2000

A Case For The Place Of Music In The Outdoor Education Program, Marie Bernardy

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Knowing this, music can become an indispensable part of outdoor education programs because music summons the basic connections that sustain human life: our fellow humans and the planet Earth. Recognizing nature as the point of origin for sounds in music is to truly touch the roots of music. Recognizing music as a form of communication for humans is to touch the roots of culture. Thus, we have a triad of influences among people, nature and music. This triad is worth exploring in outdoor education programs because of what it can teach participants about themselves and about their world.

Seaway: A Multi-Agent Decision-Support System For Naval Expeditionary Logistic Operations, Anthony Wood, Kym Jason Pohl, Justin Crawford, Mark Lai, John Fanshier, Ken Cudworth, Tom Tate, Hisham Assal, Shawn Pan, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This report describes work performed by CDM Technologies Inc. in conjunction with the Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, for the Office of Naval Research (ONR), on the SEAWAY experimental system for planning, gaming and executing maritime logistic operations from a sea base. SEAWAY incorporates three fundamental concepts that distinguish it from existing (i.e., legacy) command and control applications. First, it is a collaborative system in which computer-based agents assist human operators by monitoring, analyzing and reasoning about events in near real-time. Second, SEAWAY includes an ontological model of the …

Alternate Models Of Centrifugal Cleaners For The Paper Industry, Eric Bauer Dec 2000

Alternate Models Of Centrifugal Cleaners For The Paper Industry, Eric Bauer

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Clean pulp is essential to the optimum operation of any paper machine. The hydrocyclone is the most space, energy and cost efficient method to remove both heavy and light contaminants from a papermaking slurry. The efficiency of a hydrocyclone cleaner increases as the amount of removed contaminants increases. An efficient hydrocyclone allows the least amount of usable fiber to be lost in the cleaning process. Bradley devised a mathematical model to measure the efficiency of a hydrocyclone, and it is still the accepted model today. Several problems may exist with the Bradley Model as it applies to paper making slurries. …
