Family Support Of Emergent Literacy In Students With Moderate And Severe Cognitive Delays, Dianna M. Higgins

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to explore family support of emergent literacy of students with moderate and severe cognitive delays. The research question addressed was "Does family support of emergent literacy differ on the basis of the severity of the student's cognitive delay?" Data were gathered by means of a parent survey of home literacy experiences.

Research showed that students with moderate cognitive delays participated in more emergent literacy activities and exhibited higher level responses to emergent literacy activities than students with severe cognitive delays, and the parents of moderately delayed students perceived more academically oriented benefits to home literacy activities. Results …

When a Japanese speaker or an American English speaker is engaged in an interaction in their second/foreign language (L2), they have choices in terms of language performance. They can maintain their behavior as what is conventional in their own first language/culture, what is expected in the partner's first language/culture, or what is believed to be the appropriate language behavior in the language in use (L2).

In this current study, backchanneling behavior is chosen to be one socio-pragmatic behavior that can be very different depending on language/culture. Data were collected in telephone conversations from a total of four listeners, all advanced …

Gender Differences In Mathematics Anxiety And Achievement: Grades 4-8, Juliet H. Mcginley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in mathematics anxiety as it is related to mathematics achievement. It was expected that there would not be a gender difference in mathematics achievement, but that there would be a gender difference in math anxiety. This study reports on the level of self-concept and the degree of congruence between the selection of an academic major and their personality type or profile using the Self Directed Search (Holland, 1994). Integrating Domain Knowledge With Data: From Crisp To Probabilistic And Fuzzy Knowledge, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Leonid Reznik May 2000

Integrating Domain Knowledge With Data: From Crisp To Probabilistic And Fuzzy Knowledge, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Leonid Reznik

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is well known that prior knowledge about the domain can improve (often drastically) the accuracy of the estimates of the physical quantities in comparison with the estimates which are solely based on the measurement results. In this paper, we show how a known method of integrating crisp domain knowledge with data can be (naturally) extended to the case when the domain knowledge is described in statistical or fuzzy terms.

The Dispatchful Byeworkman, Michael Keith

Word Ways

In this article we introduce the Dispatchful Byeworkman, a fellow closely related to the Gunpowdery Blacksmith (who is, as readers of Word Ways are well aware, the longest Unabridged Merriam-Webster two-word isogram). By contrast the Dispatchful Byeworkman is an example of the longest two-word isogram crossword, with 21 letters in the two words but only 20 distinct letters (diagram at left below).

Word Ways

Did you know that guitar legend ERIC CLAPTON is a NARCOLEPTIC? Or that singer BRITNEY SPEARS is a member of the PRESBYTERIANS? Or that actress MEG RYAN hails from GERMANY? Well, actually, such observations are only true loglogically; these are examples of famous people whose combined first and last names can be anagrammed into a single English word.

Sequential Snakes And Ladders, Rex Gooch May 2000

Sequential Snakes And Ladders, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

In a private communication I recently received an example and a challenge. The example was to change COLD to BARE by changing each letter in turn (all words to be valid), then to return to COLD in the same fashion: COLD BOLD BALD BARD BARE CARE CORE COLE COLD. I have previously called such sequences of there-and-back (regardless of the order of change) Snakes and Ladders, so I termed these sequences Sequential Snakes and Ladders, or SSLs for short.
