First Principles Of Physio-Informatic Systems: Neurocosmology, David Jay Warner Jun 2000

First Principles Of Physio-Informatic Systems: Neurocosmology, David Jay Warner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Physio-informatics is a new systems model for linking human physiologic systems to information systems in the most general way. Physio-informatics is used here to denote a systems based, physiologically robust reference architecture for designing and refining interactive human-computer interface systems in ways that increase operational throughput of information. In this dissertation, a systems model for interactive human-computer interface systems is developed. This model is a physiologically based reference architecture for designing and developing interactive human computer interface systems to match the human nervous system’s ability to transduce, transmit, and render to consciousness the necessary information to interact intelligently with information. …

On Literariness: From Post-Structuralism To Systems Theory, Marko Juvan Jun 2000

On Literariness: From Post-Structuralism To Systems Theory, Marko Juvan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "On Literariness: From Post-Structuralism to Systems Theory," Marko Juvan argues that the question of literariness concerns the very identity and social existence of not only literature per se but of literary theory as a discipline. A literary theorist is not only an observer of literature; he/she is also a participant who -- at least indirectly, via the a priori systems of science and education -- is engaged in constructing both the notion and the practice of literature as well as the study of literature. Literariness is neither an invariant cluster of "objectively" distinctive properties of all texts …

Bakhtin, Genre Formation, And The Cognitive Turn: Chronotopes As Memory Schemata, Bart Keunen Jun 2000

Bakhtin, Genre Formation, And The Cognitive Turn: Chronotopes As Memory Schemata, Bart Keunen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Bakhtin, Genre Formation, and the Cognitive Turn: Chronotopes as Memory Schemata," Bart Keunen proposes a new reading of Bakhtin's notion of the chronotope. Bakhtin is widely taken to be a pioneer of genological thinking, but one of his key concepts -- the chronotope -- is still subject to highly divergent interpretations. Moreover, the epistemological implications of his genology have not yet been fully realized. In this article, a methodological grounding in schema theory is proposed. Bakhtin's concept can be used to study the way in which literary communication functions through what the psychologist Frederic Bartlett first called …

How Is A Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses, Johan F. Hoorn Jun 2000

How Is A Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses, Johan F. Hoorn

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "How is a Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses," Johan F. Hoorn discusses that in genre theory, the creation of a genre is usually envisioned as a complex selection procedure in which several factors play an equivocal role. First, he advances that genre usually is investigated at the level of the phenomenon. For instance, questions may drawn on the effects of social status, education, or "intrinsic values" on forming a genre, on an author's decision with regard to in which genre to express his/her creativity. Second, Hoorn attempts to formulate a general mechanism that explains the forming of …

Comparative Cultural Studies And Ethnic Minority Writing Today: The Hybridities Of Marlene Nourbese Philip And Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Sabine Milz

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Comparative Cultural Studies and Ethnic Minority Writing Today: The Hybridities of Marlene Nourbese Philip and Emine Sevgi Özdamar," Sabine Milz examines and compares strategies with which the Caribbean-Canadian woman writer Marlene Nourbese Philip and the Turkish-German woman writer Emine Sevgi Özdamar "de-colonise" ethnocentric Canadian and German discourse respectively and thus create their own spaces of hybridity. She argues that both Philip's and Özdamar's writings -- by going beyond cultural-national categories and boundaries -- display vital stimuli for multi-cultural and inter-national dialogue in a manner that facilitates cultural co-existence in spaces of hybridity. Responding to this stimulus, Milz's …

Manipulating Ethos And Pathos: Accents, Product Complexity, And Promotional Messages In Chile, Victor Ramon Davila Jun 2000

Manipulating Ethos And Pathos: Accents, Product Complexity, And Promotional Messages In Chile, Victor Ramon Davila

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This dissertation is motivated by fundamental questions about source effects in persuasive communications: Do receiver attributes influence perceptions about the source and about the object of the message? Do source and object cues influence receiver perceptions about the source? Do source and object cues influence receiver perceptions about the object of the message?

Traditional conceptions of receiver responses to a source have focused on character trait inferences. Of these character trait inferences, the literature on source credibility appears to converge on two categories: source expertise and source trustworthiness. A more recent stream of research has grown around the concept of …

From Robotic Toil To Symbolic Theft: Grounding Transfer From Entry-Level To Higher-Level Categories1, A Cangelosi, A Greco, S Harnad Jun 2000

From Robotic Toil To Symbolic Theft: Grounding Transfer From Entry-Level To Higher-Level Categories1, A Cangelosi, A Greco, S Harnad

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Neural network models of categorical perception (compression of within-category similarity and dilation of between-category differences) are applied to the symbol-grounding problem (of how to connect symbols with meanings) by connecting analogue sensorimotor projections to arbitrary symbolic representations via learned category-invariance detectors in a hybrid symbolic/non-symbolic system. Our nets are trained to categorize and name 50 × 50 pixel images (e.g. circles, ellipses, squares and rectangles) projected on to the receptive field of a 7 × 7 retina. They first learn to do prototype matching and then entry-level naming for the four kinds of stimuli, grounding their names directly in the …

An Expert System Solution To Watermarking, David Coumou Jun 2000

An Expert System Solution To Watermarking, David Coumou

Theses

The watermarking system proposed in this paper offers an expert system technique to help solve the ownership claim on digital images. The watermarking system is based on fuzzy logic and was designed with the intent of embedding watermark features such that they are undetectable to the human visual system. To achieve this objective, the development and design of the watermarking scheme was targeted to utilize three of the five perceptual holes of the human visual system: intensity resolution, intensity sensitivity and spatial masking. Basing the design on these characteristics, the resulting watermarking scheme proved to be resilient to several image …

A Cross Culture Comparison Of Learning Styles, Yamit Massachi Jun 2000

A Cross Culture Comparison Of Learning Styles, Yamit Massachi

Theses

This study examined differences in learning styles between African-American and Caucasian students while also taking into consideration students' gender. Students in grade 9th through 12th grade completed the Silver-Hanson Learning Preference Inventory (Hanson, Silver & Gulkus, 1984). This inventory is a 125-item questionnaire, which assesses students' preferences for different learning conditions, modes, and areas of interest. The sample included the results of the Learning Style inventory obtained from 95 African-American students and 95 Caucasian-Students. This study found that there is substantial evidence that gender has an affect on learning style. However, this study found marginal evidence that ethnicity affects learning …

Portland Dialect Study: The Story Of /Æ/ In Portland, Jeffrey C. Conn Jun 2000

Portland Dialect Study: The Story Of /Æ/ In Portland, Jeffrey C. Conn

Dissertations and Theses

This study reports on the hypothesized raising of the low, front vowel /æ/, which is characteristic of a regional dialect vowel shift found in cities of the Midwest and Eastern North of the United States. The raising of this vowel is the primary change in a series of vowel shifts that have traditionally been attributed to this region of the U.S. The purpose of this study is to document the production of this vowel by residents of Portland, Oregon, in order to see what light it can shed on dialect research of the Pacific Northwest, especially across age groups to …

Endotoxin Removal From Protein Solutions By Immobilized Metal Ion Affinity Chromatography, Yun Kang May 2000

Endotoxin Removal From Protein Solutions By Immobilized Metal Ion Affinity Chromatography, Yun Kang

Dissertations

In the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, the removal of endotoxins from final protein product has always been a challenge. A novel method for endotoxin removal from protein solutions, immobilized metal (ion) affinity chromatography (IMAC) has been developed in this study. Fe3+ was charged to a chelating gel that contains iminodiacetic acid (IDA). The IDA- Fe3+ IMAC column was exploited to remove endotoxin from protein solutions. This method involves the adsorption of the endotoxin on IMAC column. More than 99% endotoxin is removed and protein yield is higher than 90%. IDA-Fe3+ IMAC has proved to be an economical and efficient …

The Public Rhetoric Of Privatization : The Value System Of The Water And Wastewater Industry, Claire St. Louis May 2000

The Public Rhetoric Of Privatization : The Value System Of The Water And Wastewater Industry, Claire St. Louis

Theses

Politicians involved in the water and wastewater industry invoke core American values in their rhetoric to persuade their audience to support or decry privatization. By weaving these values into their rhetoric, politicians provide moral and social justification for their audiences to support them, whether in election or privatization.

This thesis places these rhetoricians in their historical context It analyzes the legacy of environmentalism, from the 17th and l8th century religious preachers to the 19th and 20th century Greenspeak writers to the 21st century leaders of America's largest cities. It provides a detailed discussion of the American value system as defined …
