Information Needs In The 21st Century: Will Eric Be Ready?, Lawrence M. Rudner Aug 2000

Information Needs In The 21st Century: Will Eric Be Ready?, Lawrence M. Rudner

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Ubiquitous for 35 years, the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) is known for its database and recently for its range of web-based information services. I contend that federal policy with regard to ERIC must change and that ERIC will need massive restructuring in order to continue to meet the information needs of the education community. ...

Mythcon 31 - Myth And Legend Of The Pacific, The Mythopoeic Society Aug 2000

Mythcon 31 - Myth And Legend Of The Pacific, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

Welcome to Mythcon XXXI, situated in the heart of Hawai'i's version of "The Cracks of Doom. " It comes complete with the grayness and the mists, the blasted earth, and a belly full of hot lava-a power even Gandalf couldn't control. But while Frodo a·nd Sam toiled we will celebrate, while their spirits dropped our spirits will rise, and while they were alone we will share together. The most powerful word in Hawai 'i is Aloha. It encompasses a generosity of spirit, and a love of the land, and people. This is what we hope you will find here. You …

The Phonology And Morphology Of The Tanacross Athabaskan Language, Gary Holton Aug 2000

The Phonology And Morphology Of The Tanacross Athabaskan Language, Gary Holton

Alaska Native Language Center Faculty

This dissertation presents a linguistic description of the phonology and morphology of Tanacross Athabaskan, an endangered language spoken by approximately sixty persons in eastern interior Alaska. There is little extant documentation of Tanacross; hence, this description is based primarily on data gathered from first-hand field work. Tanacross is typical of the Athabaskan family in its typological characteristics. There is a relatively small phonemic inventory, and most of the phonemic contrasts are neutralized outside the stem-syllable onset position. The lexicon is relatively small, consisting of perhaps six thousand distinct morphemes. Noun morphology is relatively straightforward, with few active morphological processes. In …

Contingency Theory Is Of Little Value In Helping Leaders Or Potential Leaders To Perform Successfully, Eric Cheng Aug 2000

Contingency Theory Is Of Little Value In Helping Leaders Or Potential Leaders To Perform Successfully, Eric Cheng

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Contingency Theory does not provide a recipe to problems, but some argue that it could provide an action list. I am going to discuss the Contingency Theory of leadership in the light of whether it enhances performance. Contingency Theory is one that if we know which particular leadership style in a particular situation is more appropriate, the leader will adjust his behaviour to the situation in order to enhance performance, subordinate's job satisfaction, etc. The beginning section of the essay will be devoted to a literature review and a discussion on the theoretical framework on the three approaches of the …

Flexible Learning: Developing Opportunities, Lesley Wemyss, Carmel Thompson

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

The delivery of training in a culturally sensitive, flexible manner is vital to achieve positive outcomes when training indigenous people. Within this paper I will examine many of the do’s and don’ts when delivering culturally sensitive training. Case Studies will be presented where practitioners can work together and determine how delivery can be adapted to promote cultural sensitivity. From delivery to the outcome of flexible delivery. A range of outcomes from the Case Studies will be presented and evaluation techniques and evaluation instruments will be discussed at the reaction and learning level.

Transforming Educational Practice For A Transformed Employment Environment, Jeanne Dawson Aug 2000

Transforming Educational Practice For A Transformed Employment Environment, Jeanne Dawson

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Major transformations in the globalised management accounting profession have put pressure on accounting educators to produce ‘employment-ready’ graduates with a range of communication-related skills. Many past efforts to develop undergraduates’ communication skills have been compromised by curriculum designers’ reductive approach to ‘communication’ and the tendency to teach communication skills in isolation from or as an adjunct to the discourse of professional accounting rather than as an already integral element. This paper critiques two models for teaching communication skills within accounting programs, and then presents an alternative, ‘discursive’ model. It outlines features of this ‘discursive model’ through reference to a case …

A Comparative Analysis Of Teachers', Caucasian Parents', And Hispanic Parents' Views Of Problematic School Survival Behaviors, Lisa Aaroe, J. Ron Nelson Aug 2000

A Comparative Analysis Of Teachers', Caucasian Parents', And Hispanic Parents' Views Of Problematic School Survival Behaviors, Lisa Aaroe, J. Ron Nelson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Scholars have asserted that the misclassification of culturally diverse students in programs for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) may be attributable, at least in part, to the mismatch between the behavioral expectations present in the students' home environments and those prevalent within schools. A preliminary study was conducted to explore whether Caucasian and Hispanic parents' views of negative classroom and interpersonal school survival behaviors were consistent with one another and with those of general and special education teachers. Overall, the results suggest that parents (Caucasian and Hispanic) generally hold similar views regarding the extent to which it was …

The Name Is The Game, Richard Lederer Aug 2000

The Name Is The Game, Richard Lederer

Word Ways

Al Gore's name spoonerized is "galore" which turns out to be a clever Al Gore rhythm. This year Republicans are experiencing Al Gore-aphobia, but are hoping to Bush whack the opposition. George Bush's name anagrammed becomes "He bugs Gore," and, adding the the W, "He grew bogus" which I realize you may interpret as a Bush League prey on words. Switching first letters of the candidates' last names, we discover that one will gush and the other will bore. Looks like we're in for a Gore-Tex campaign--I hope it doesn't leak. I predict that at the end of the campaign …
