Late-Talking Toddlers: Mlu And Ipsyn Outcomes At 3;0 And 4;0, Leslie Rescorla, Katherine Dahlsgaard, Julie Roberts Oct 2000

Late-Talking Toddlers: Mlu And Ipsyn Outcomes At 3;0 And 4;0, Leslie Rescorla, Katherine Dahlsgaard, Julie Roberts

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Expressive language outcomes measured by MLU and the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) at ages 3;0 and 4;0 were investigated in 34 late talkers with normal receptive language identified between 2;0 to 2;7 and 16 typically developing comparison children matched on age, SES, and nonverbal ability. Late talkers made greater gains than comparison children between 3;0 and 4;0 in both MLU and IPSyn raw score. However, when age-standardized x-scores were analysed, the late talkers were about 2.5 Standard deviations below comparison children on both measures at both ages. At 3;0, 41 % of the late talkers had MLUs above the …

The History And Politics Of Second Amendment Scholarship: A Primer, Carl T. Bogus Oct 2000

The History And Politics Of Second Amendment Scholarship: A Primer, Carl T. Bogus

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The introductory Article to this Symposium reviews the history and politics of Second Amendment scholarship, beginning in 1960, when the first article endorsing the individual right model was published, challenging what had previously been the accepted view that the Second Amendment grants only a collective right to keep and bear arms within the government-organized militia. Bogus describes how gun rights organizations embarked on a bootstrap campaign to develop a large body of writing supporting the individual right model, much of it by lawyers directly employed by or representing gun rights organizations, and then argued that the sheer mass of this …

The Second Amendment In Action, Michael A. Bellesiles Oct 2000

The Second Amendment In Action, Michael A. Bellesiles

Chicago-Kent Law Review

There are those who argue that the Second Amendment guarantees an unrestricted individual right to gun ownership. If the original intention of the framers of the Constitution and Bill of Rights is to inform contemporary debates, then we must know more about the historical context in which these documents were written. This Article explores the nature and extent of gun laws at the time the Second Amendment was ratified by the states, as well as those laws passed in the shadow of this Amendment. The continuing efforts of states to control access to and use of guns once the Second …

The Second Amendment: The Highest Stage Of Originalism, Jack N. Rakove Oct 2000

The Second Amendment: The Highest Stage Of Originalism, Jack N. Rakove

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Originalism is the theory of constitutional interpretation that holds that the meaning of the various provisions of the Constitution was fixed at the moment of their adoption, and that the goal of interpretation is to recover that historical meaning and apply it to current disputes. No subject of current constitutional controversy is more closely tied to originalist theories of interpretation than the debate over the meaning of the Second Amendment. But for all the lip service given to originalism and all the homage Americans pay to the wisdom of the founders, there is little agreement among scholars as to how …

Disarmed By Time: The Second Amendment And The Failure Of Originalism, Daniel A. Farber Oct 2000

Disarmed By Time: The Second Amendment And The Failure Of Originalism, Daniel A. Farber

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Originalism provides the core arguments for an individual right "to keep and bear Arms." The appropriate role of original intent in constitutional law, however, has been debated for the past two decades. In this Article, Farber illustrates how the Second Amendment exemplifies the classic, well-known criticisms of originalism. This does not prove, of course, that the conventional understanding of the Second Amendment should be retained. But, Farber concludes, advocates for a drastic expansion of Second Amendment rights will need something beyond the ambiguous historical record if they wish to show why, in today's world, gun rights warrant constitutional protection.

The Picture Changes Stylistic Variation In Sitting Bull's Biographies, Barbara Risch Oct 2000

The Picture Changes Stylistic Variation In Sitting Bull's Biographies, Barbara Risch

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Until the 1800s Indian warriors of the Plains recorded significant heroic events from their adventures and pursuits in pictographs, on hide. Then, during the nineteenth century, these pictographs began to be produced on paper as well. About the same time that paper was coming into use, canvas and muslin became available, and the drawings that had formerly been composed on hide began to appear on these new materials. Typically, Indian men made use of discarded or captured ledgers, memorandum books, or rosters to render their exploit narratives; the representation of such events on these materials is referred to as ledger …

A Biochemist In Honors, Dail Mullins

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In 1984-quite unlike the depressed protagonist of George Orwell's novel-I found myself happily ensconced as a senior research associate in the department of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I had received my Ph.D. in biochemistry from the same institution nine years earlier; had left for two years to do a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of cancer biology at Georgetown University and the National Institutes of Health; but had returned to U AB at the invitation of my doctoral mentor, Jim Lacey, to work on a project grant he had been awarded from …

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In this paper we provide human service professionals with a foundation for understanding the cultural and programmatic issues necessary for effectively addressing the needs of Latinos within a context of demographic transition and decreases in public support for educational attainment, physical and mental health, and occupational success. A long tradition of deficit thinking has shaped many of the current models employed when addressing the needs of Latinos. The authors suggest "community/culturally centered" or "strengths-based" approaches, such as community based organizations (CBOs), as promising alternatives to current practices. Coalitions among CBOs can be the most effective method in creating and sustaining …

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The preamble to The Convention on the Rights of the Child, "recalls the basic principles of the United Nations and specific provisions of certain relevant human rights treaties and proclamations; reaffirms the fact that children, because of their vulnerability, need special care and protection; and places special emphasis on the primary caring and protective responsibilities of the family, the need for legal and other protection of the child before and after birth, the importance of respect for the cultural values of the child's community, and the vital role of international cooperation in achieving the realization of children's rights" (UNICEF 2001). …

The Second Amendment In Context: The Case Of The Vanishing Predicate, H. Richard Uviller, William G. Merkel Oct 2000

The Second Amendment In Context: The Case Of The Vanishing Predicate, H. Richard Uviller, William G. Merkel

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Uviller and Merkel argue that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was intended by the framers (and, perhaps more importantly, understood by the ratifiers) to be intimately bound up in the ideal of service in the lawfully established militia-for many eighteenth-century Americans, the preferred alternative to that "bane of liberty," the standing army. But as Uviller and Merkel set out to show, the historic common militia celebrated in the republican ideology of eighteenth-century Whigs was already on the road to obsolescence when the Second Amendment became law. By the middle of the nineteenth century, few citizens mustered …

Language Ideologies, Choices, And Practices In Eastern African Hip Hop, Alex Perullo, John Fenn Oct 2000

Language Ideologies, Choices, And Practices In Eastern African Hip Hop, Alex Perullo, John Fenn

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

Hip hop emerged as a musical and cultural force during the late 1970s in the United States and has followed a global trajectory ever since. Artists and fans around the world filter North American hip hop styles through their own local musical, social, and linguistic environments, making hip hop a highly visible (and audible) example of the intersection of global and local youth cultures. Young people in Tanzania and Malawi, neighboring African countries in the eastern region of the continent, are no exception to this creative process. Both countries have vibrant hip hop communities that draw on youth knowledge of …

Puerto Rico: Cultural Nation, American Colony, Pedro A. Malavet Oct 2000

Puerto Rico: Cultural Nation, American Colony, Pedro A. Malavet

UF Law Faculty Publications

As a matter of law, Puerto Rico has been a colony for an uninterrupted period of over five hundred years. In modern times, colonialism—the status of a polity with a definable territory that lacks sovereignty because legal/political authority is exercised by a peoples distinguishable from the inhabitants of the colonized region—is the only legal status that the isla (island) has known. This Article posits that Puerto Rico's colonial status—particularly its intrinsic legal and social constructs of second-class citizenship for Puerto Ricans—is incompatible with contemporary law or a sensible theory of justice and morality.

Puerto Ricans, as United States citizens by …

Law, Culture, And Equality - Human Rights' Influence On Domestic Norms: The Case Of Women In The Americas, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Oct 2000

Law, Culture, And Equality - Human Rights' Influence On Domestic Norms: The Case Of Women In The Americas, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

This essay originated with a panel on Alternatives to the Regular Courts that took place during the first Legal and Policy Issues in the Americas conference sponsored by the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Some of the possible alternatives to the courts, in the trade field, that have been discussed include mediation, arbitration, constitutional courts and binational dispute panels. This essay reflects upon another alternative to domestic courts that progressively and increasingly is also being invoked in the trade context: international and regional human rights regimes.

I specifically will review the Inter-American Human Rights System to ascertain the …
