The Development And Validation Of Science Learning Inventory (Sli): A Conceptual Change Framework., Mehdi Seyedmonir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A multidimensional theoretical model, Conceptual Change Science Learning (CCSL), was developed based on Standard Model of Conceptual Change and Cognitive Reconstruction of Knowledge Model. The model addresses three main components of science learning, namely the learner's conceptual ecology, the message along with its social context, and the cognitive engagement. A learner's conceptual ecology is organized around three clusters, including epistemological beliefs, existing conceptions, and motivation. Learner's cognitive engagement is represented by a continuum from peripheral processing involving shallow cognitive engagement to central processing involving deep cognitive engagement. Through reciprocal, non-sequential interactions of such constructs, the learners' conceptual change is achieved. …

Dexter: Generating Documents By Means Of Computational Registers, Joseph D. Oldham Jan 2000

Dexter: Generating Documents By Means Of Computational Registers, Joseph D. Oldham

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Software is often capable of efficiently storing and managing data on computers. However, even software systems that store and manage data efficiently often do an inadequate job of presenting data to users. A prototypical example is the display of raw data in the tabular results of SQL queries. Users may need a presentation that is sensitive to data values and sensitive to domain conventions. One way to enhance presentation is to generate documents that correctly convey the data to users, taking into account the needs of the user and the values in the data. I have designed and implemented a …

Variations On Some Themes Of A Disporting Gazelle And His Friend: Statutory Interpretation As Seen By Jerome Frank And Felix Frankfurter, Kent Greenawalt

Faculty Scholarship

In 1947, this Review published two lectures on statutory interpretation by Jerome Frank and Felix Frankfurter. Both jurists were concerned with a basic question: How constrained are judges when they interpret legislation? The answers each gives, while similar in some respects, differ strikingly. In arguing that interpretation necessarily involves a creative element, Frank analogizes the role of a judge in interpreting legislation to that of a performer in interpreting a musical composition. Although he argues that judicial creativity is constrained, Frank views statutory interpretation as "a kind of legislation." For Frankfurter, by contrast, in construing a statute, a judge is …

With Thor Across The Heavens, Ben Larson

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Consumers are generally affected by packaging and naming of particular products. Take, for example, a product like shampoo. A few years ago, the brand Halsa was launched. While most people probably saw the label showing the girl with the beautiful hair, they were very likely also influenced by the name Halsa. Had they understood its meaning [Swedish = health], they would probably have had even more faith in the shampoo, but the enigmatic and unusual-sounding name created a favorable impression in them.

For several years now I have begun my first-year contracts course with the 1988 New Jersey Supreme Court case In the Matter of Baby M. In this essay, I want to explain why.
