Journal Articles

My task, as I understand it, is to make some observations about where complex litigation might head in the future - and some suggestions about how we might do our work today to make that future better. As I write this paper, I realize, of course, that this task is an impossible one. It is not impossible to imagine any of a number of possible futures for complex litigation; indeed, I spend a great deal of time imagining multiple possible futures. Since I am writing a month in advance of the conference, however, it is impossible to connect the ideas …

Following reports of frequent deaths associated with jaundice and chronic liver disease among adults in a periurban community of Karachi, Pakistan, an investigation was conducted to evaluate the relationship between injections and viral hepatitis infections, to identify the reasons why patients received frequent injections, and to observe the injection practices employed in clinics. Two hundred and three adult patients were interviewed as they left each of the 18 area clinics. Practitioners were interviewed and three consecutive injections were observed at each clinic. Eighty-one per cent of patients received an injection on the day of the interview. Of the 135 patients …

Non-Enzymatic Glycosylation (Or Glycation) And Inhibition Of The Pig Heart Cytosolic Aspartate Aminotransferase By Glyceraldehyde 3-Phosphate, Catherine Fitzgerald, Timothy Swearengin, George Yeargans, David Mcwhorter, Brad Cucchetti, Norbert W. Seidler

Faculty and Staff Publications

Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (Glyc3P), a glycolytic intermediate, non-enzymatically glycosylated (or glycated) and inhibited the pig heart cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase (cAAT). Glyc3P (5.0 mM) decreased cAAT activity by 47% after 1 min at 23 degrees C. cAAT activity remained unchanged after a 24h incubation with either glucose 6-phosphate (5.0 mM) or ribose 5-phosphate (5.0 mM). Increasing the incubation pH from 6.4 to 7.8 or the incubation temperature from 23 degrees C to 50 degrees C enhanced Glyc3P's inhibitory effect on cAAT activity. Glyc3P (250-500 microM) decreased the thermal stability of cAAT as evidenced by lowering the Tm or temperature that caused a …

Corporations Practicing Law Through Lawyers: Why The Unauthorized Practice Of Law Doctrine Should Not Apply, Grace M. Giesel Jan 2000

Corporations Practicing Law Through Lawyers: Why The Unauthorized Practice Of Law Doctrine Should Not Apply, Grace M. Giesel

Missouri Law Review

Historically, a doctrine has existed within the area of unauthorized practice of law regulation which holds that a corporation or other entity cannot be licensed to practice law and thus cannot legally practice law. Even if the entity hires as an employee an attorney duly licensed to render the service, the doctrine forbids the attomey from representing any party other than the employer because if the attorney were to represent a third party, the entity, a nonlawyer, would be representing the third party, and this would violate the rule that corporations may not practice law.2 The primary motivating rationale of …

A Comparative Approach To Understanding Sea Turtle Hatchling Metabolism During Emergence, Erin Cherish Redfearn Jan 2000

A Comparative Approach To Understanding Sea Turtle Hatchling Metabolism During Emergence, Erin Cherish Redfearn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Sea turtle nests were compared to determine the effects of nest depth on hatchling anaerobic metabolism in Juno Beach, Florida, USA. In situ nests of 3 species (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas and Dermochelys coriacea) were compared. Relocated loggerhead nests were studied under an experimental regime. Nest temperatures and oxygen concentrations were monitored. On the night of first emergence, blood samples were taken from hatchlings resting at the nest chamber bottom and sand surface, and digging to the sand surface. Samples were analyzed for lactate concentrations. Blood lactate levels were high in hatchlings actively digging and low for those resting. Lactate …

Calcium Requirement And Growth In The Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta L.), Jeanne Louise Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The calcium requirement in captive-raised hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) was investigated. Comparisons were made among turtles on 6 experimental diets and between captive and wild turtles. Diets consisted of trout chow diets containing 1%, 2%, 3%, or 4% calcium and 1.65% phosphorous, AquaMax 500RTM (2% Ca), and shrimp. Feeding trials lasted 28 days and changes in body size and bone density were measured. The calcium and phosphorous content of foods eaten by post-hatchlings in the sargassum were compared with captive diets. Results showed that shrimp was high in protein and low in calcium, with nearly twice as much …

Children's Cognitive Representations Of Parent-Child Interaction As Determinants Of Victimization And Aggression In The Peer Group, Jennifer Lynn Yunger Jan 2000

Children's Cognitive Representations Of Parent-Child Interaction As Determinants Of Victimization And Aggression In The Peer Group, Jennifer Lynn Yunger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Victimized children display debilitating thoughts, feelings and behaviors that may originate in family interactions and generalize to the peer group, causing children to be victimized by aggressive peers. This study tested the hypothesis that children's mental representations of their family experiences cause them to have reactions during peer interactions that lead to their victimization by peers. It was suggested that a perception of the self as helpless and a perception of the parent as controlling or threatening causes children to exhibit debilitated behavior among peers that contributes to their victimization. Also, certain perceptions of self and parent may contribute to …

Design Of 10-Transistor Low-Power Full Adders, Hung Tien Bui Jan 2000

Design Of 10-Transistor Low-Power Full Adders, Hung Tien Bui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

We propose two approaches to design 1-bit full adders which can yield good performance at low power consumption. In the first approach, we design XOR/XNOR gates using a minimal number of CMOS transistors. Comparing with 10 different XOR/XNOR gates reported in literature, the new XOR/XNOR gates consume less power. The gates consisting of the smallest number of transistors are combined to create 1-bit full adders. The process is systematic and yields a total of 42 10-transistor full adders, 41 of which are new. Simulation results show that most of the new adders perform better than a previously existing 10-transistor adder …

Design Of A Frequency Shift Keying Array Receiver For The Acoustic Modem, Cecile. Boubli Jan 2000

Design Of A Frequency Shift Keying Array Receiver For The Acoustic Modem, Cecile. Boubli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Currently, our acoustic modems are used to communicate underwater to Autonomous Underwater Vehicles AUVs. These modems have only one sensor and can transmit at low data rates (from 200 to 1200 bits per second) using Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation. A two-dimensional array receiver (MillsCross) has been developed to receive underwater signals with more reliability, at a higher data rate (about 30,000 bits per second). This array has been designed to operate with Phase Shift Keying modulated signals. The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a signal processing software to demodulate and decode FSK signals acquired by …

Design Of An Ankle Implant Using Design For Assembly (Dfa) Principles, Ha Van Vo Jan 2000

Design Of An Ankle Implant Using Design For Assembly (Dfa) Principles, Ha Van Vo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Current ankle implant designs have shown significant improvements in last ten years. However, failure rates are still high and about 30% of patients ended up with fusion joint or lower leg amputation after ten years of first operations because of long term associated pain. A new ankle joint implant presenting in this study (Vo-ankle implant) was designed to base on the Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to optimize the device biomechanically. It overcomes most of problems shown in current ankle implants. The new ankle implant has four major advantages over the current models. First, the new ankle constructed to distribute …

Does Residential Landscape Type Affect Nitrogen Runoff And Leaching?, John Erickson Erickson Jan 2000

Does Residential Landscape Type Affect Nitrogen Runoff And Leaching?, John Erickson Erickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Intensely maintained turfgrass landscapes have some potential for loss of fertilizer nitrogen (N) in both runoff and leaching. Lower maintenance vegetation used in mixed-species landscapes may reduce N leaching and runoff, which is important for reducing environmental pollution of surface and ground waters. However, few studies have examined this paradigm. Therefore, we constructed a field-scale facility to compare fertilizer N runoff and leaching between St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze cv. 'Floratam') and a mixed-species landscape designed by the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods (FYN) program. A blended granular fertilizer was applied at a rate of 300 and 150 kg N …

Dynamics Of Human Sensorimotor Coordination: From Behavior To Brain Activity, Yanqing Chen Jan 2000

Dynamics Of Human Sensorimotor Coordination: From Behavior To Brain Activity, Yanqing Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The dynamics of human sensorimotor coordination are studied at behavioral and neural levels through temporal synchronization and syncopation tasks. In experiment 1, subjects synchronized their finger movements (in-phase) with a metronome at 2.0Hz and 1.25Hz for 1200 cycles. Fluctuations of timing errors were analyzed through correlation, power spectrum analyses and Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE). Results indicated that the synchronization error time series was characterized by a 1/falpha type of long memory process with alpha = 0.5. Previous timing models based upon motor program or simple "central clock" ideas were reviewed to show that they could not explain such long range …

The Conundrum Of Executive Compensation, Mark J. Loewenstein Jan 2000

The Conundrum Of Executive Compensation, Mark J. Loewenstein

Publications

Much of the scholarship on executive compensation that appears in law reviews assumes that large U.S. corporations overpay their chief executive officers ("CEOs"). This assumption is understandable, as many of these compensation packages are indeed stunning. The question of whether CEOs are overpaid, however, is complicated. Some scholars in other disciplines, principally in economics and management science, have studied the issue but, as this Article demonstrates, this literature does not confirm the assumption. Indeed, some studies suggest that CEO pay is competitive. Moreover, efforts to reduce the level of executive compensation may have the unintended consequence of achieving the opposite …

Host Selection, Chemical Detection, And Protection Of The Symbiotic Pinnotherid Crabs Dissodactylus Crinitichelis And Clypeasterophilus Rugatus Associated With Echinoderms, Misty N. Reeves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Host selection by Dissodactylus crinitichelis and Clypeasterophilus rugatus for different echinoderms was investigated. Initial preference (within 24 h of collection) and preference after "conditioning" with an alternate host were compared. D. crinitichelis initially preferred its field host, the sand dollar Encope michelini, but after conditioning switched its host preference to a non-field host, the sea biscuit Clypeaster rosaceus. This switch in host preference after conditioning occurred despite consumption of numerous crabs (86 out of 167) by C. rosaceus. Clypeasterophilus rugatus initially preferred its field host, the sea biscuit Clypeaster rosaceus, but showed little change in host preference after conditioning. These …

Hydrodynamics And Control Of An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Equipped With A Vectored Thruster, Page Yann Georges Le Jan 2000

Hydrodynamics And Control Of An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Equipped With A Vectored Thruster, Page Yann Georges Le

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In this study, a laminar flow hull shape is implemented on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), with boundary layer suction at the aft end of the hull to prevent separation. The hull shape has the largest diameter of the vehicle near the aft end of the hull resulting in an accelerating flow over the majority of the hull's surface. The problem of axially symmetrical flow around the AUV is solved using a potential flow analysis. A finite difference algorithm evaluates the stream function, leading to the computation of fluid velocity and pressure fields. The boundary layer characteristics are analyzed to …

New Woman Before She Was New: Olive Schreiner's "The Story Of An African Farm" And Fanny Fern's "Ruth Hall", Dana Jo Richardson Jan 2000

New Woman Before She Was New: Olive Schreiner's "The Story Of An African Farm" And Fanny Fern's "Ruth Hall", Dana Jo Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Despite the designation of Olive Schreiner's Lyndall in The Story of an African Farm as the first "New Woman" in literature, the nineteenth-century New Woman, with her high ideals and belief in an androgynous compromise of sex roles, is exemplified by Fanny Fern's heroine Ruth in the novel Ruth Hall. While Lyndall speaks of social injustice done to women, the limitations of her provincial setting preclude her protests from achieving the level of social activism; however, Ruth's protests, in the form of newspaper articles, do reach the level of social activism. Schreiner's androgynous ideal becomes lost in a role reversal …

Preliminary Investigation Of Ceramic Styles And Chronology At The Rio Chico Site (Omjplp170), Manabi, Ecuador, Monica. Oyola-Coeur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis studies a ceramic assemblage recently excavated at Rio Chico (OMJPLP170), a coastal multi-component site situated in Southern Manabi, Ecuador. Stratigraphic excavations provided the data for analysis, which primarily consisted of utilitarian wares that were examined within the archaeological context. Ceramic utilitarian wares were used to reconstruct the cultural sequence at Rio Chico, dating from the Early Formative Period Valdivia Phase to the Integration Period Manteno Phase, and to assess the use of space throughout the occupation. Additionally, ceramic vessel reconstruction provided insights about the types of activities and behavioral patterns of the prehispanic inhabitants of Rio Chico in …

Representacion De La Aniquilacion De La Creatividad Artistica Femenina En Obras Seleccionadas De Elena Poniatowska, Ana Adriazola-Rodriguez Jan 2000

Representacion De La Aniquilacion De La Creatividad Artistica Femenina En Obras Seleccionadas De Elena Poniatowska, Ana Adriazola-Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The annihilation of women's artistic creativity in selected works by the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska is a result of societal conditioning. Two short stories from Lilus Kikus and the short novel Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela portray the process of deterioration and demeaning obliteration of women's creative faculties, as they are conditioned to accept the conventional roles of wife and mother. Poniatowska's texts posit that, upon assuming these roles, the exercise of the creative artist's use of her imagination is postponed or detrimentally transformed forever. In the selected texts, women's artistic creativity is chronicled first at its best while the …

Rhetorical Analysis Of A Feminine Style And Feminist Research In Scholarly Communication Journals, Diane Theresa Bifano Jan 2000

Rhetorical Analysis Of A Feminine Style And Feminist Research In Scholarly Communication Journals, Diane Theresa Bifano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Nine journal articles were analyzed in order to understand gendered composition and what makes writing an article feminine and what makes it masculine. The journals reviewed were Communication Monographs, Communication Theory, Critical Studies in Mass Communication, Human Communication Research, Quarterly Journal of Speech, and Women Studies in Communication. Categories were compiled to include the characteristics of a feminine style in feminist research, and a masculine style in traditional research. This analysis takes a rhetorical approach in order to address a more gender diverse perspective in research. As a result of many published articles reflecting a theme of a "dominant masculinist …
