Genetic Enhancement Technologies And The New Society, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2000

Genetic Enhancement Technologies And The New Society, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

So long as procreation continues to remain a central driving force in a marital relationship, and the family the very core of progressive society, efforts will be undertaken to expand the period of fecundity and combat infertility. Genetic planning and eugenic programming are more rational and humane alternatives to population regulation than death by famine and war.

Genetic enhancement technologies and the scientific research undertaken to advance them should be viewed as not only aiding (or, sometimes resolving) the tragedy of infertility in family planning, but as a tool for enhancing the health of a Nation's citizens by engineering man's …

Response Of Captive Coyotes To Renardine Coyote Repellent, D. E. Zemlicka, J. R. Mason Jan 2000

Response Of Captive Coyotes To Renardine Coyote Repellent, D. E. Zemlicka, J. R. Mason

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Renardine is a bone tar product available for use as a coyote (Canis latrans) repellent in Canada. The substance is applied to pasture borders to prevent coyotes from entering and attacking sheep. Because data regarding the effectiveness of Renardine are lacking, we designed two experiments. In the first, six pairs of coyotes were first presented with 400 g of ground meat in two pans (200 g/pan) with false screen bottoms. Beneath the screens were absorbent tubes wetted with 10 ml of distilled water. Subsequently, during a treatment period, the absorbent tube was wetted with 10 ml of Renardine. …

Hazing And Movements Of Canada Geese Near Elmendorf Air Force Base In Anchorage, Alaska, Darryl L. York, John L. Cummings, Richard M. Engeman, Kate L. Wedemeyer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Bird strikes to aircraft are a serious economic and safety problem in the United States, annually causing millions of dollars in damage to civilian and military aircraft and the occasional loss of human life. We observed movements of 1236 neckbanded lesser Canada geese (Branta canadensis parvipes) to determine efficacy of hazing as a means to reduce goose presence at Elmendorf Air Force Base (EAFB), Anchorage, Alaska from August to October 1997. Emphasis was on movements of geese onto EAFB with additional data collected at the other two major airports in the area, Anchorage International Airport (AIA) and Merrill …

Home Ranges And Habitat Selection Of White-Tailed Deer In A Suburban Nature Area In Eastern Nebraska, Scott Hygnstrom, Kurt C. Vercauteren

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We evaluated the movements of 59 radio-collared female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) at the Gifford Point Wildlife Management Area (GP) and Fontenelle Forest Nature Area (FF) in eastern Nebraska from 1994 to 1997. Annual home ranges averaged 276 ha (CI = 166 ha). Forty-four of the deer maintained relatively small home ranges (0=129 ha) and resided in the GP lowlands (n=14), FF lowlands (n=ll), and FF uplands-Bellevue residential area (BR) (n= 19). Deer in the latter area were frequently observed in backyards, at deer feeders, and on city streets. Seven of the deer were transients, maintaining seasonal home …

Evaluation Of Hot Sauce® As A Repellent For Forest Mammals, Kimberly K. Wagner, Dale L. Nolte Jan 2000

Evaluation Of Hot Sauce® As A Repellent For Forest Mammals, Kimberly K. Wagner, Dale L. Nolte

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Foraging by forest mammals can be significantly detrimental to reforestation efforts. Repellents may offer a nonlethal solution for some situations. Hot Sauce® animal repellent uses capsaicin, a trigeminal irritant that should be aversive to most mammals. We conducted a series of tests evaluating the impact of Hot Sauce on foraging by 5 species of forest mammals. In our first study, we examined its potential to reduce browsing by black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus). Damage to Western redcedar seedlings (Thuja plicata) was initially reduced with application of a 6.2% Hot Sauce solution, but efficacy began to decline after …

Deer Population Management Through Hunting In A Suburban Nature Area In Eastern Nebraska, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Scott E. Hygnstrom Jan 2000

Deer Population Management Through Hunting In A Suburban Nature Area In Eastern Nebraska, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Scott E. Hygnstrom

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The Fontenelle Forest Nature Area (FF) maintained a hands-off management policy for 30 years until it was recognized that white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations had grown to such levels that they were severely degrading native plant communities. In 1995, members of a community task force decided to sponsor annual nine-day hunting seasons on FF after learning that densities exceeded 28 deer/km2. Archers harvested 85 antlerless deer in the FF upland areas adjacent to residential Bellevue, Nebraska during 1996 to 1998. Muzzleloader hunters removed 53 antlerless deer from the FF lowland areas. Archery and muzzleloader hunters harvested …

The Role Of The Law Review In The Tradition Of Judicial Scholarship, Kenneth F. Ripple Jan 2000

The Role Of The Law Review In The Tradition Of Judicial Scholarship, Kenneth F. Ripple

Journal Articles

This article explores one of the most important sources of judicial education, the law review. Part I first examines, by way of introduction, why continued intellectual growth is so important to the American jurist of today. It then sets forth the growth of the law review as an institution within the legal profession. Part II examines the various roles that law reviews play traditionally in the intellectual life of a judge and suggests, with respect to each, certain improvements in the judge-law review relationship designed both to enhance the effectiveness of the law review as an intellectual companion and to …

Education Reform At The Crossroads: Politics, The Constitution, And The Battle Over School Choice, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2000

Education Reform At The Crossroads: Politics, The Constitution, And The Battle Over School Choice, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

The "Education Reform at the Crossroads" Conference's four panels tackled the education-reform and school-choice questions from a variety of perspectives—one panel, led by Cleveland's indefatigable councilwoman and education revolutionary Ms. Fannie Lewis, explored the history and increasingly visible politics of the school-choice debate—in particular, the marked increase in support for school choice among African Americans"—while another group focused on the constitutionality of including religious schools in voucher programs and on the historical connection between anti-Catholic nativism and the common-school movement. A third panel discussed framing school-choice as a "civil rights issue" and the fourth—which included political scientist and education researcher …

Looking Forward, Jay Tidmarsh Jan 2000

Looking Forward, Jay Tidmarsh

Journal Articles

My task, as I understand it, is to make some observations about where complex litigation might head in the future - and some suggestions about how we might do our work today to make that future better. As I write this paper, I realize, of course, that this task is an impossible one. It is not impossible to imagine any of a number of possible futures for complex litigation; indeed, I spend a great deal of time imagining multiple possible futures. Since I am writing a month in advance of the conference, however, it is impossible to connect the ideas …

Unsafe Injections And The Transmission Of Hepatitis B And C In A Periurban Community In Pakistan, A J. Khan, S P. Luby, F Fikree, A Karim, S Obaid, S Dellawala, S Mirza, T Malik, S Fisher-Hoch, J B. Mccormick

Community Health Sciences

Following reports of frequent deaths associated with jaundice and chronic liver disease among adults in a periurban community of Karachi, Pakistan, an investigation was conducted to evaluate the relationship between injections and viral hepatitis infections, to identify the reasons why patients received frequent injections, and to observe the injection practices employed in clinics. Two hundred and three adult patients were interviewed as they left each of the 18 area clinics. Practitioners were interviewed and three consecutive injections were observed at each clinic. Eighty-one per cent of patients received an injection on the day of the interview. Of the 135 patients …

Non-Enzymatic Glycosylation (Or Glycation) And Inhibition Of The Pig Heart Cytosolic Aspartate Aminotransferase By Glyceraldehyde 3-Phosphate, Catherine Fitzgerald, Timothy Swearengin, George Yeargans, David Mcwhorter, Brad Cucchetti, Norbert W. Seidler

Faculty and Staff Publications

Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (Glyc3P), a glycolytic intermediate, non-enzymatically glycosylated (or glycated) and inhibited the pig heart cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase (cAAT). Glyc3P (5.0 mM) decreased cAAT activity by 47% after 1 min at 23 degrees C. cAAT activity remained unchanged after a 24h incubation with either glucose 6-phosphate (5.0 mM) or ribose 5-phosphate (5.0 mM). Increasing the incubation pH from 6.4 to 7.8 or the incubation temperature from 23 degrees C to 50 degrees C enhanced Glyc3P's inhibitory effect on cAAT activity. Glyc3P (250-500 microM) decreased the thermal stability of cAAT as evidenced by lowering the Tm or temperature that caused a …

Corporations Practicing Law Through Lawyers: Why The Unauthorized Practice Of Law Doctrine Should Not Apply, Grace M. Giesel Jan 2000

Corporations Practicing Law Through Lawyers: Why The Unauthorized Practice Of Law Doctrine Should Not Apply, Grace M. Giesel

Missouri Law Review

Historically, a doctrine has existed within the area of unauthorized practice of law regulation which holds that a corporation or other entity cannot be licensed to practice law and thus cannot legally practice law. Even if the entity hires as an employee an attorney duly licensed to render the service, the doctrine forbids the attomey from representing any party other than the employer because if the attorney were to represent a third party, the entity, a nonlawyer, would be representing the third party, and this would violate the rule that corporations may not practice law.2 The primary motivating rationale of …

A Comparative Approach To Understanding Sea Turtle Hatchling Metabolism During Emergence, Erin Cherish Redfearn Jan 2000

A Comparative Approach To Understanding Sea Turtle Hatchling Metabolism During Emergence, Erin Cherish Redfearn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Sea turtle nests were compared to determine the effects of nest depth on hatchling anaerobic metabolism in Juno Beach, Florida, USA. In situ nests of 3 species (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas and Dermochelys coriacea) were compared. Relocated loggerhead nests were studied under an experimental regime. Nest temperatures and oxygen concentrations were monitored. On the night of first emergence, blood samples were taken from hatchlings resting at the nest chamber bottom and sand surface, and digging to the sand surface. Samples were analyzed for lactate concentrations. Blood lactate levels were high in hatchlings actively digging and low for those resting. Lactate …

Calcium Requirement And Growth In The Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta L.), Jeanne Louise Alexander Jan 2000

Calcium Requirement And Growth In The Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta L.), Jeanne Louise Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The calcium requirement in captive-raised hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) was investigated. Comparisons were made among turtles on 6 experimental diets and between captive and wild turtles. Diets consisted of trout chow diets containing 1%, 2%, 3%, or 4% calcium and 1.65% phosphorous, AquaMax 500RTM (2% Ca), and shrimp. Feeding trials lasted 28 days and changes in body size and bone density were measured. The calcium and phosphorous content of foods eaten by post-hatchlings in the sargassum were compared with captive diets. Results showed that shrimp was high in protein and low in calcium, with nearly twice as much …

Children's Cognitive Representations Of Parent-Child Interaction As Determinants Of Victimization And Aggression In The Peer Group, Jennifer Lynn Yunger Jan 2000

Children's Cognitive Representations Of Parent-Child Interaction As Determinants Of Victimization And Aggression In The Peer Group, Jennifer Lynn Yunger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Victimized children display debilitating thoughts, feelings and behaviors that may originate in family interactions and generalize to the peer group, causing children to be victimized by aggressive peers. This study tested the hypothesis that children's mental representations of their family experiences cause them to have reactions during peer interactions that lead to their victimization by peers. It was suggested that a perception of the self as helpless and a perception of the parent as controlling or threatening causes children to exhibit debilitated behavior among peers that contributes to their victimization. Also, certain perceptions of self and parent may contribute to …

Design Of 10-Transistor Low-Power Full Adders, Hung Tien Bui Jan 2000

Design Of 10-Transistor Low-Power Full Adders, Hung Tien Bui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

We propose two approaches to design 1-bit full adders which can yield good performance at low power consumption. In the first approach, we design XOR/XNOR gates using a minimal number of CMOS transistors. Comparing with 10 different XOR/XNOR gates reported in literature, the new XOR/XNOR gates consume less power. The gates consisting of the smallest number of transistors are combined to create 1-bit full adders. The process is systematic and yields a total of 42 10-transistor full adders, 41 of which are new. Simulation results show that most of the new adders perform better than a previously existing 10-transistor adder …

Design Of A Frequency Shift Keying Array Receiver For The Acoustic Modem, Cecile. Boubli Jan 2000

Design Of A Frequency Shift Keying Array Receiver For The Acoustic Modem, Cecile. Boubli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Currently, our acoustic modems are used to communicate underwater to Autonomous Underwater Vehicles AUVs. These modems have only one sensor and can transmit at low data rates (from 200 to 1200 bits per second) using Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation. A two-dimensional array receiver (MillsCross) has been developed to receive underwater signals with more reliability, at a higher data rate (about 30,000 bits per second). This array has been designed to operate with Phase Shift Keying modulated signals. The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a signal processing software to demodulate and decode FSK signals acquired by …

Design Of An Ankle Implant Using Design For Assembly (Dfa) Principles, Ha Van Vo Jan 2000

Design Of An Ankle Implant Using Design For Assembly (Dfa) Principles, Ha Van Vo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Current ankle implant designs have shown significant improvements in last ten years. However, failure rates are still high and about 30% of patients ended up with fusion joint or lower leg amputation after ten years of first operations because of long term associated pain. A new ankle joint implant presenting in this study (Vo-ankle implant) was designed to base on the Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to optimize the device biomechanically. It overcomes most of problems shown in current ankle implants. The new ankle implant has four major advantages over the current models. First, the new ankle constructed to distribute …

Does Residential Landscape Type Affect Nitrogen Runoff And Leaching?, John Erickson Erickson Jan 2000

Does Residential Landscape Type Affect Nitrogen Runoff And Leaching?, John Erickson Erickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Intensely maintained turfgrass landscapes have some potential for loss of fertilizer nitrogen (N) in both runoff and leaching. Lower maintenance vegetation used in mixed-species landscapes may reduce N leaching and runoff, which is important for reducing environmental pollution of surface and ground waters. However, few studies have examined this paradigm. Therefore, we constructed a field-scale facility to compare fertilizer N runoff and leaching between St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze cv. 'Floratam') and a mixed-species landscape designed by the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods (FYN) program. A blended granular fertilizer was applied at a rate of 300 and 150 kg N …
