Intensity Of Grief And Belief In Personal Control, Diana M. Alferink Jan 2000

Intensity Of Grief And Belief In Personal Control, Diana M. Alferink

Theses

Much research has focused on stress and its consequences. Some studies have indicated personal control helps an individual handle stress better and remain healthier. Little research, however, has examined the role personal control plays in bereavement as a stressful life event. This correlational study examined the relationship between belief in personal control and grief intensity experienced from losing a loved one to death. Volunteer subjects primarily from Grief Support Groups completed the Belief in Personal Control Scale and the Texas Revised Grief Inventory Results demonstrated some instances when higher belief in personal control resulted in lower intensity of grief in …

Data Mining In Health-Care: Issues And A Research Agenda, Monica Adya Jan 2000

Data Mining In Health-Care: Issues And A Research Agenda, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

While data mining has become a much-lauded tool in business and related fields, its role in the healthcare arena is still being explored. Currently, most applications of data mining in healthcare can be categorized into two areas: decision support for clinical practice, and policy planning/decision making. However, it is challenging to find empirical literature in this area since a substantial amount of existing work in data mining for health care is conceptual in nature. In this paper, we review the challenges that limit the progress made in this area and present considerations for the future of data mining in healthcare.

Antigenic Epitope Analysis Of The P101 Nucleocapsid Protein Of Human Herpes Virus 6 (Var.B), Katherine Anne Francis Jan 2000

Antigenic Epitope Analysis Of The P101 Nucleocapsid Protein Of Human Herpes Virus 6 (Var.B), Katherine Anne Francis

Student Works (2000-2009)

Human herpes virus 6 (HHV6) is an ubiquitous, lymphoproliferative P-herpesvirus, which infects almost all individuals during infancy and persists lifelong. Two variants of HHV6 (A and B) have been described. The present study is on HHV6B, which causes exanthem subitum, also known as roseola infantum, a common febrile childhood illness. Two methods of detection for anti-HHV6B in body fluids were used, being indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and peptidylated pin-ELISA. For IFA, the target cells were HHV68-infected human cord blood mononuclear cells (HCBMC). Ninety eight infant sera were tested by IFA and all were found to be IgG-HHV6 positive. Seventeen breast …

Along The Red Road: Tribally Controlled Colleges And Student Development, Ann Marie Machamer

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

American Indian tnibally controlled colleges were created to provide higher education in a familiar cultural setting to a population that is severely underrepresented in American higher education. Since little is known regarding student development at tribal colleges, the purpose of this study was to assess retention, talent development, satisfaction, racial discrimination, and cultural knowledge/identity at tribal colleges using American Indians who attended non-Indian institutions as a comparison sample. In early 1999, survey data were collected from students who entered fourteen tribal colleges and two Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) colleges and from American Indian students who entered non-Indian. institutions in …

Production And Characterization Of Monoclonal Anti-Ovalbumin Antibodies, Mehmet Zi̇ya Doymaz, Hakan Bulut, Aykut Özdarendeli̇, Yusuf Bolat

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study, the results of anti- ovalbumin (OVA) monoclonal antibody production and characterization are reported. Splenocytes from OVA-hyperimmune Balb/C mouse were fused with F0 myeloma cells and resulting hybridoma cells were selected in hypoxanthine-aminopterine-thymidine containing medium. A total of 37 HAT resistant hybridomas were obtained. Upon testing the hybridoma supernatants in OVA and mouse immunoglobulin G specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, we observed that two of the hybridomas secreted OVA specific antibodies. The hybridomas produced IgG class antibodies. The hybridomas were grown and the supernatants from the cultures were also tested in a Western Blot assay. The results of ELISA …

We report 2 cases of neurobrucellosis which were encountered for the first time during the past 10 years at this hospital.

Is Hiv Disability Under The Americans With Disabilities Act: Unanswered Questions After Bragdon V. Abbott, Connie Mayer Jan 2000

Is Hiv Disability Under The Americans With Disabilities Act: Unanswered Questions After Bragdon V. Abbott, Connie Mayer

Journal of Law and Health

Prior to the passage of the ADA in 1990, the term "individual with a handicap" had been clearly established under federal disability laws to include all people with HIV. Every reported decision under the Rehabilitation Act and the Fair Housing Amendment Act had determined that asymptomatic HIV was protected as a per se disability. Prior to 1997, only a few Courts had faced the issue of whether a plaintiff with asymptomatic HIV was disabled under the ADA. In 1997, the Fourth and First Circuit Courts of Appeal decided cases in direct conflict with one another, opening the door for the …

More Hippocrates, Less Hypocrisy: Early Offers As A Means Of Implementing The Institute Of Medicine's Recommendations On Malpractice Law, Jeffrey O'Connell, Patrick B. Bryan

Journal of Law and Health

To remove the fear of personal liability from individual health care workers and eliminate the incentive to hide errors rather than report them, the IOM acknowledges that tort reform of some sort is also needed. Since the IOM calls for shifting attention away from the faults of individual care providers to the defects of the system itself, the current tort system's "blame culture" is itself blamed by the IOM for providing an impediment to improving the safety of patients by deterring physicians from reporting their own errors in the first place. However, the IOM's To Err is Human does not …

Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland Jan 2000

Legal Rites: Abjection And The Criminal Regulation Of Consensual Sex, Kate Sutherland

Articles & Book Chapters

The application of criminal law to consensual sex is an arena of conflict and contest between conservative and liberal forces in the United States, with occasional feminist interventions. The same arguments tend to recur on each side of the debate. Conservatives assert the appropriateness and necessity of enforcing a particular Judeo-Christian sexual morality through law. Liberals argue for tolerance of private consensual sexual conduct. When the debate shifts from the private to the public arena, conservatives may argue privacy principles, asserting the right of bystanders to be let alone, whereas liberals may shift to freedom of expression arguments. In this …

A Decision Technology System To Advance The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed for decades. Described spatial patterns and trends have provided clues for generating hypotheses about the etiology of cancer. For breast cancer, investigators have demonstrated that some variation can be explained by differences in the population distribution of known breast cancer risk factors such as menstrual and reproductive variables (Laden, Spiegelman, and Neas, 1997; Robbins, Bescianini, and Kelsey, 1997; Sturgeon, Schairer, and Gail, 1995). However, regional patterns also may reflect the effects of Workshop on Hormones, Hormone Metabolism, Environment, and Breast Cancer (1995): (a) environmental hazards (such as air and water pollution), (b) …
