A Mycobacterium Ulcerans Toxin, Mycolactone, Causes Apoptosis In Guinea Pig Ulcers And Tissue Culture Cells, Kathleen M. George, Lisa Pascopella, Diane M. Welty, P. L. C. Small Feb 2000

A Mycobacterium Ulcerans Toxin, Mycolactone, Causes Apoptosis In Guinea Pig Ulcers And Tissue Culture Cells, Kathleen M. George, Lisa Pascopella, Diane M. Welty, P. L. C. Small

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Mycobacterium ulcerans is the causative agent of Buruli ulcer, a tropical ulcerative skin disease. One of the most intriguing aspects of this disease is the presence of extensive tissue damage in the absence of an acute inflammatory response. We recently purified and characterized a macrolide toxin, mycolactone, from M. ulcerans. Injection of this molecule into guinea pig skin reproduced cell death and lack of acute inflammatory response similar to that seen following the injection of viable bacteria. We also showed that mycolactone causes a cytopathic effect on mouse fibroblast L929 cells that is characterized by cytoskeletal rearrangements and growth arrest …

No set of issues has tended to separate economists and ecologists, especially in the mind of the public, more than those surrounding the linkages between economic growth, human carrying capacity, and the environment. The general lack of interest among the majority of economists in problems of the environment and a parallel lack of interest among the majority of ecologists in economic issues, combined with a lack of dialogue between the two groups, has allowed extreme positions to take hold in the public debate and to influence policy to an inordinate degree.

Bulletin 4394 - Exotic Diseases - Sheep And Goats, Agriculture Western Australia Feb 2000

Bulletin 4394 - Exotic Diseases - Sheep And Goats, Agriculture Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

An exotic disease is a disease which does not occur in Australia.

If an exotic disease did occur in Australia it would cause production losses, stock deaths and stop exports of primary production. When export markets are lost they can only be re-established once it is proven the disease is eradicated. Some exotic diseases may be transmitted to humans

Snapshots Of Success: Examples Of Imsa Women Graduates, Marti Guarin

Examples of Student Diversity

Searching for a cure for cancer in the heart of a cell, analyzing the ecology of Illinois tall grass prairies, engineering Illinois products to precise specifications, or volunteering to help others, IMSA graduates contribute in myriad ways.

The vignettes offer an in-depth look at several graduates, and the snapshots provide some more glimpses. Women tell how the IMSA experience enabled them to develop confidence to meet academic and personal challenges, succeed in a rigorous academic environment, and grow with the many opportunities IMSA made available.

Thank you to Cathy Veal of the President's Office for the concept and ideas. Thank …

Interferon Regulatory Factor 7 Is Induced By Epstein-Barr Virus Latent Membrane Protein 1, Luwen Zhang, Joseph S. Pagono Feb 2000

Interferon Regulatory Factor 7 Is Induced By Epstein-Barr Virus Latent Membrane Protein 1, Luwen Zhang, Joseph S. Pagono

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Infection by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) generates several types of latency with different profiles of gene expression but with expression of Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) in common. The BamHI Q promoter (Qp) is used for the transcription of EBNA-1 mRNA in type I latency, which is an EBV infection state exemplified by Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL). However, Qp is inactive in type III latency, and other promoters (C/Wp) are used for transcription of EBNA-1, which raises the question of how usage of these promoters is governed. Interferon (IFN) regulatory factor 7 (IRF-7) was identified first as a negative regulator of …

Arthropod And Helminth Parasites From The Plains Pocket Gopher, Geomys Bursarius Bursarius From The Hosts' Northern Boundary Range In Minnesota, Monroe H. Bartel, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

As part of a continuing and more general study of the diversity of parasites from subterranean mammals in central North America, individuals of the Plains pocket gopher, Geomys bursarius bursarius, were collected from 7 localities in northwestern Minnesota from September 1991 through October 1996. Arthropods collected included the fleas, Opisocrostis bruneri (4 of 124, 3.20/0), Foxella ignota ignota (85 of 124, 68.50/0); the chewing louse, Geomydoecus geomydis geomydis from 98 of 124 (790/0), and larvae of the tick, Dermacentor variabilis (1 of 124, 0.8%). Nematodes found included Physaloptera limbata (2 of 118 gophers, 1.7%), Capillaria americana (4 of 118, …

Helminthoxys Abrocomae N. Sp. (Nematoda: Oxyurida) From Abrocoma Cinerea In Bolivia, Jean-Pierre Hugot, Scott Lyell Gardner Feb 2000

Helminthoxys Abrocomae N. Sp. (Nematoda: Oxyurida) From Abrocoma Cinerea In Bolivia, Jean-Pierre Hugot, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A new pinworm parasite is described from Abrocoma cinerea, a caviomorph rodent of the superfamily Octodontoidea from the Andes of Bolivia. The new species, Helminthoxys abrocomae n. sp., possesses special secretory mamelons which we consider a synapomorphy of the genus Helminthoxys. Within Helminthoxys, the closest relatives are found in octodontoid rodents: H. gigantea occurs in Octodon degus in Chile and O. bridgesi in Argentina, and H. freitasi is a parasite of Thrichomys aperoides in Brazil. H. abrocomae n. sp. differs from both other species morphometrically in relation to different parts of the body in both sexes, particularly …

A Phylogenetic Hypothesis For Species Of The Genus Taenia (Eucestoda: Taeniidae), Eric P. Hoberg, Arlene Jones, Robert L. Rausch, Keeseon S. Eom, Scott Lyell Gardner Feb 2000

A Phylogenetic Hypothesis For Species Of The Genus Taenia (Eucestoda: Taeniidae), Eric P. Hoberg, Arlene Jones, Robert L. Rausch, Keeseon S. Eom, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cladistic analysis of a numerical data matrix describing 27 characters for species of Taenia resulted in four most parsimonious phylogenetic trees (174 steps; consistency index = 0.28; homoplasy index = 0.72; retention index = 0.48). Monophyly for Taenia is diagnosed by the metacestode that is either a cysticercus or a form derived from a bladder-like larva; no other unequivocal synapomorphies are evident. Tree structure provides no support for recognition of a diversity of tribes or genera within the Taeniinae: Fimbriotaeniini and Taeniini have no phylogenetic basis. Hydatigera, Fimbriotaenia, Fossor, Monordotaenia, Multiceps, Taeniarhynchus, Tetratirotaenia must …

Integronlike Structures In Campylobacter Spp. Of Human And Animal Origin, Brigid Lucey, D. Crowley, P. Moloney, B. Cryan, M. Daly, F. O'Halloran, E. J. Threlfall, S. Fanning

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

Resistance to antimicrobial agents used to treat severe Campylobacter spp. gastroenteritis is increasing worldwide. We assessed the antimicrobial resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. isolates of human and animal origin. More than half (n = 32) were resistant to sulphonamide, a feature known to be associated with the presence of integrons. Analysis of these integrons will further our understanding of Campylobacter spp. epidemiology.

In-Vitro Activity Of Synercid And Related Drugs Against Streptococcus Oralis Isolated From Septicaemia And Endocarditis Cases, Rafay A. M Jan 2000

In-Vitro Activity Of Synercid And Related Drugs Against Streptococcus Oralis Isolated From Septicaemia And Endocarditis Cases, Rafay A. M

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective: The increase in resistance to gram positive organisms and seriousness of infective endocarditis, makes it necessary to look for an alternate treatment. Methods: In-vitro activity of synercid was compared with penicillin, amoxycillin, teicoplanin, vancomycin, clindamycin and erythromycin. Results: Synercid showed minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) within the narrow range of 0.06 – 0.5 mg/l. MIC50 and mode values were both 0.25 mg/l. There was just two-fold difference between the MIC50 (0.25 mg/l) and the MIC90, (0.5 mg/l). Although the MICs of synercid for S. oralis were relatively high compared to penicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin and teicoplanin, the in-vitro bactericidal activity of …

Naturally Occurring Tap-Dependent Specific T-Cell Tolerance For A Variant Of An Immunodominant Retroviral Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Epitope, Victor Kim, Jonathan W. Yewdell, William R. Green Jan 2000

Naturally Occurring Tap-Dependent Specific T-Cell Tolerance For A Variant Of An Immunodominant Retroviral Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Epitope, Victor Kim, Jonathan W. Yewdell, William R. Green

Dartmouth Scholarship

Upon immunization and restimulation with tumors induced by the endogenous AKR/Gross murine leukemia virus (MuLV), C57BL/6 mice generate vigorous H-2K(b)-restricted cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) responses to a determinant (KSPWFTTL) derived from the p15E transmembrane portion of the viral envelope glycoprotein. By contrast, the highly homologous determinant RSPWFTTL, expressed by tumor cells induced by Friend/Moloney/Rauscher (FMR) MuLV, is not immunogenic, even when presented to the immune system as vaccinia virus-encoded cytosolic or endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-targeted minigene products. Such minigene products are usually highly immunogenic since they bypass the need for cells to liberate the peptide or transport the peptide into the ER …

Univercity News (2000-01-10)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
