The Impact Of Sexism On Older Women's Mental And Physical Health, Kelli Lynn Mcswan
The Impact Of Sexism On Older Women's Mental And Physical Health, Kelli Lynn Mcswan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Research has demonstrated that discrimination accounts for a statistically significant portion of the variance in women’s reported physical and mental symptoms above and beyond that accounted for by generic stressors. Furthermore, the literature suggests that discrimination in the elderly has lead to inadequate medical care as well as psychological and physical problems. Relatively little is known, however, about the degree to which older women perceive or experience sexism. This study investigated whether or not elderly women experience sexism and the impact it may have on their mental and physical health.

Staphylococcus Aureus Rn6390 Replicates And Induces Apoptosis In A Pulmonary Epithelial Cell Line, Barbara C. Kahl, Mark Goulian, Willem Van Wamel, Mathias Herrmann, Sanford M. Simon, Gilla Kaplan, Georg Peters, Ambrose L. Cheung
Dartmouth Scholarship
Staphylococcus aureus frequently colonizes the airways of patients with compromised airway defenses (e.g., cystic fibrosis [CF] patients) for extended periods. Persistent and relapsing infections may be related to live S. aureus bacteria actively residing inside epithelial cells. In this study, we infected a respiratory epithelial cell line, which was derived from a CF patient, with S. aureus RN6390. Internalization of S. aureus was found to be time and dose dependent and could be blocked by cytochalasin D. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that internalized bacteria resided within endocytic vacuoles without any evidence of lysosomal fusion in a 24-h period. The results …

Economic Analysis Of A Large Scale Oral Vaccination Program To Control Raccoon Rabies, Philip Kemere, Michael K. Liddel, Phylo Evangelou, Dennis Slate, Steven Osmek
Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium
Since the late 1980s, results of oral vaccination trials in several states have provided growing evidence that this vaccination method may be effective for controlling the spread of rabies in raccoons (Procyon lotor). This study examines the economic feasibility of using oral vaccination on a larger scale than previous trials. We analyze the benefits and costs associated with a hypothetical barrier that would stretch from Lake Erie to the Gulf of Mexico, combining natural geographic features provided by the Appalachian Mountains with oral vaccination zones. The goal of this barrier would be to prevent the raccoon rabies variant …

The Economic Impact Of Invasive Species To Wildlife Services’ Cooperators, David L. Bergman, Monte D. Chandler, Adrienne Locklear
Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium
On February 3, 1999, the president of the United States signed an Executive Order 13112 on invasive species. Each federal agency was directed to detect and respond rapidly to control populations of invasive species, monitor invasive species populations, provide for restoration of native species and habitat conditions, conduct research on invasive species and develop technologies to prevent their introduction, and promote public education on invasive species and the means to address them. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services Program fulfills a federal responsibility for helping solve problems which occur when human activity and wildlife, including invasive species, are …
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Age And Ionizing Radiation On Cognitive Performance, Elizabeth L. Gerhardt
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Age And Ionizing Radiation On Cognitive Performance, Elizabeth L. Gerhardt
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This thesis was designed to study whether age has a significant effect on cognitive test results among persons exposed to ionizing radiation. The data for this investigation came from the fourth year of a 1995-98 longitudinal study of subjects exposed to radiation from the 1986 Chernobyl, Ukraine, nuclear power plant accident. Accuracy and efficiency scores from four cognitive tests taken by 84 Ukrainian volunteers were divided into two age groups and three radiation dosage groups for analysis. The results of this study found that decrements in human performance on tasks involving spatial processing increase with age in persons who have …

Actinomycotic Liver Abscess, Tarig S. Al-Khuwaitir, Ahmed A. Abdulwahab, Tariq M. El-Sharqawy, Abdullah A. Cheryakkath, Safia M. Sherbeeni
Saudi Medical Journal
Actinomycosis bacteria are known for their disregard to anatomical boundaries and their ability to infect organs all over the body including the liver. Here the infection is usually contained in the form of single or multiple abscesses. The clinical manifestations produced are variable even protean and only in some patients point to the right upper abdominal quadrant. However with appropriate imaging modalities and culture techniques for microaerophilic organisms accurate diagnosis is possible and specific antibiotic therapy can be initiated. We report a patient with an actinomycotic liver abscess and no apparent predisposing factor. She was diagnosed on the basis of …

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus : Implications For Cardiac Surgery, Karen L. Johnson
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus : Implications For Cardiac Surgery, Karen L. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogen first emerging in Great Britian in 1961. Since that time, it has spread worldwide and caused epidemic infection rates in several countries. It is most commonly spread in the healthcare setting where it is labeled a "nosocomial" infection, frequently infecting patients undergoing invasive medical procedures and immune-compromised patients. Depending on the severity and location of infection in conjunction with the patient's health status, MRSA infection can be mild to fatal. The surgical setting is a key area of concern. Cardiac surgery complicated by MRSA is relatively rare, but when it does occur, …
