Composing Research: A Contextualist Paradigm For Rhetoric And Composition, Cindy Johanek Jan 2000

Composing Research: A Contextualist Paradigm For Rhetoric And Composition, Cindy Johanek

All USU Press Publications

In Composing Research, Cindy Johanek offers a new perspective on the ideological conflict between qualitative and quantitative research approaches, and the theories of knowledge that inform them. With a paradigm that is sensitive to the context of one's research questions, she argues, scholars can develop less dichotomous forms that invoke the strengths of both research traditions. Context-oriented approaches can lift the narrative from beneath the numbers in an experimental study, for example, or bring the useful clarity of numbers to an ethnographic study.

A Technical Characterization Of Estuarine And Coastal New Hampshire, New Hampshire Estuaries Project, Stephen H. Jones Jan 2000

A Technical Characterization Of Estuarine And Coastal New Hampshire, New Hampshire Estuaries Project, Stephen H. Jones

PREP Reports & Publications

This technical characterization report provides a comprehensive compilation of information on key issues related to water quality and natural resources in the estuaries of New Hampshire. The report has identified some significant issues and problems facing these estuaries that will require management attention. Issues common to estuaries across the nation have been addressed to varying extents, depending on their significance in New Hampshire. Much of the trend information is biased by the sporadic interest given to the different resources and water quality issues through the years. Studies have focused to differing extents on the various areas of the coast, providing …

Publishing Patterns In Specialist Accounting History Journals In The English Language, 1996-1999, Garry D. Carnegie, Brad N. Potter

Accounting Historians Journal

While accounting researchers have explored international publishing patterns in the accounting literature generally, little is known about recent contributions to the specialist international accounting history journals. Specifically, this study surveys publishing patterns in the three specialist, internationally refereed, accounting history journals in the English language during the period 1996 to 1999. The survey covers 149 contributions in total and provides empirical evidence on the location of their authors, the subject country or region in each investigation, and the time span of each study. It also classifies the literature examined based on the literature classification framework provided by Carnegie and Napier …

Finding A Common Ground: Working With The Georgian National Archives To Create A Trilingual Database, Peter Carini, Kara Drake Jan 2000

Finding A Common Ground: Working With The Georgian National Archives To Create A Trilingual Database, Peter Carini, Kara Drake

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

On two separate occasions over the past four years, the authors traveled to the former Soviet Republic of Georgia as part of a team charged with the work of training Georgian archivists in international descriptive standards as part of a database project. The Sakartvelo Database Project provided an introduction to Georgian history, culture, and the development of the country's archival program. It also provided a picture of what it is like to work in a former Soviet republic and the reality of what it is to handle language barriers and physical and environmental obstacles.

India-West Africa Trade Textiles (Iwatt): 'An Escapade In The Life' Of Gujarati Mirror-Work Embroidery, Hazel A. Lutz Jan 2000

India-West Africa Trade Textiles (Iwatt): 'An Escapade In The Life' Of Gujarati Mirror-Work Embroidery, Hazel A. Lutz

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In this paper I will analyze the development of design within the several-hundred-yearold tradition of producing textiles in India for export to specific cultural markets in West Africa, in particular the appearance of Gujarati-style mirror-work embroidery within RMHK Fancy in the 1990s. I begin by describing the research process and defining RMHKFancy.

The paper is based on ethnographic field research I completed in Madras, India on contemporary embroidery production for export to West Africa in 1997. The research addressed the question of how design and production occur in a transnational trade textile tradition1 between India and West Africa, involving …

Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner Jan 2000

Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner

Articles

Using Nietzsche's great essay on the uses and disadvantages of history for life as his jumping-off point, Judge Posner examines the utility of the study of history for adjudication and legal scholarship. He argues, following Nietzsche; that the wrong kind of historical study can be very bad for "life " including law, while the right kind-the kind deployed by a pragmatic judge or a policy-oriented legal scholar-may deviate from literal accuracy in the direction of a rhetorical and imaginative narrative of historical events that can be constructively employed in a forward-looking approach to legal problems.

The Heavy Burden Of The State: Revisiting The History Of Labor Law In The Interwar Period, Christopher L. Tomlins Jan 2000

The Heavy Burden Of The State: Revisiting The History Of Labor Law In The Interwar Period, Christopher L. Tomlins

Seattle University Law Review

This Article reflects on possible conclusions to be drawn from this symposium. The article concludes that individually, these authors have demonstrated the returns to be gained by pushing labor law history into new empirical and conceptual areas. Collectively, however, their achievement is somewhat different, for collectively they recommend that we revisit what is ostensibly familiar to us.

East Africa Institute

Lake Victoria is of immense economic and environmental importance in the eastern and central African region. The lake is the largest freshwater body in the tropics and its basin supports one of the densest and poorest rural populations in the world. About 21 million people rely primarily on subsistence agricultural and pastoral production for their livelihoods. But pervasive poverty has hindered sustainable use of the land resources and there has already been considerable land degradation. There is little doubt that sedimentation and nutrient run-off, urban and industrial point source pollution and biomass burning, have induced the rapid eutrophication of Lake …

Taking Stock: New Views Of American Labor Law Between The World Wars, Daniel R. Ernst

Seattle University Law Review

This Article provides an introduction to the symposium. This symposium originated in a session at the annual meeting of the American Society for Legal History held in Seattle in October 1998. Entitled "Labor, Law, and the State in the Interwar Period," the panel provided four different views of a decisive period in the development of labor law in the United States. In the 1980s the panel's chair, Katherine Van Wezel Stone, and commentator, Christopher L. Tomlins, published works that helped spark a modern revival in the historical study of U.S. labor law. The authors of the four papers presented at …
