Hebraica Veritas? An Exhibition From The Collection Of The Center For Judaic Studies Library, Stephen G. Burnett, Seth Jerchower May 2000

Hebraica Veritas? An Exhibition From The Collection Of The Center For Judaic Studies Library, Stephen G. Burnett, Seth Jerchower

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Christian Hebraism was an offshoot of Renaissance humanism whose devotees—biblical scholars, theologians, lawyers, physicians, scientists, philosophers, and teachers in Latin schools—borrowed and adapted texts, literary forms, and ideas from Jewish scholarship and tradition to meet Christian cultural and religious needs. Intellectual and cultural exchange did occur between Jew and Christian during the Middle Ages, but paled by comparison with what occurred between 1450 and 1750. Encounters between cultures can be fruitful, but also very painful. Certainly Christian Hebraism had such effects both upon European Jewry, and upon western tradition. One of the most tangible witnesses to the sudden and sustained …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Determinants Of Fertility, Michelle Y. Ewert '00 Apr 2000

An Empirical Investigation Of The Determinants Of Fertility, Michelle Y. Ewert '00

Honors Projects

As sociologists and economists evaluate the demographic trends of the past century, they note that total fertility rates have fallen worldwide. Using various theories to explain demographic change, scholars attribute the fall in fertility rates to a variety of social and economic factors. This study evaluates the effect of determinants of fertility from three major theories of fertility decline. Using World Bank and United Nations data, this study considers the impact of female illiteracy, female labor force participation, per capita GNP, urbanization and female secondary education on total fertility rates. Linear regression analyses for the years 1970, 1980 and 1990 …

Prints And Printmakers In Viceregal Mexico City, 1600-1800, Kelly Donahue-Wallace Apr 2000

Prints And Printmakers In Viceregal Mexico City, 1600-1800, Kelly Donahue-Wallace

Art & Art History ETDs

Although woodcuts and engravings documented viceregal life and reflected Mexican artistic achievement, they are generally absent from colonial art historiography. This lacuna is the result of persistent biases affecting print scholarship worldwide against art tainted by multiplicity, mechanical interference, labor divisions, and popular audiences. The near total lack of published information concerning the artists and their efforts has also discouraged research on Mexican prints. This dissertation is, therefore, a documentary study of the printmaking profession in the viceregal capital between 1600 and 1800. Its goal is to examine how colonial block-cutters and engravers trained, worked, and understood their art.

Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart Apr 2000

Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart

Localités/Localities

The relationships between the wholes and parts of American history are vital to our understanding of ourselves as a nation and a people. Many of the central paradoxes and ambiguities of our national existence cannot be adequately understood without exploring the interplay between localism and nationalism that runs like a lietmotiv throughout American history. The influence of the westward movement in our nation’s past, the give and take of federal-state relations, the internecine sectionalism of the nineteenth century, and the more benign regionalism of the twentieth century raise important questions about the relationship between local history and national heritage, and …

Culture, Nationhood, And The Human Rights Ideal, Berta Esperanza Hernández-Truyol, Sharon Elizabeth Rush Apr 2000

Culture, Nationhood, And The Human Rights Ideal, Berta Esperanza Hernández-Truyol, Sharon Elizabeth Rush

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Symposium on nation and culture illustrates these LatCrit goals and advances them. The two main works and the commentaries on them are rich explorations and representations of the voices and concerns of LatCrit theory. This Foreword engages all the works by focusing on the concept of voice and silence. Part I locates the works in the axis of silence and power. Part II explores how critical theory and international human rights norms can be used to develop a progressive methodology to analyze and detect the exclusion or silencing of myriad voices. This Part develops a LatCritical Human Rights paradigm …

Managerial Decisions: A Discursive Analysis, Teresa Ann Mcconville Apr 2000

Managerial Decisions: A Discursive Analysis, Teresa Ann Mcconville

Plymouth Business School Theses

Decision making activity is at the heart of organisations and, as an essential managerial function, it has been the subject of an immense body of literature. As the majority of research has been undertaken within the disciplines of economics and psychology, studies have tended to emphasise economic rationality as the basis for cognitive reasoning, decision processes and judgement and as the analytic paradigm. However, in the face of new problems, and in times of profound change, conventional forms of thought may be problematic in themselves. This project suggests and assesses a Foucaultian framework as an alternative approach to the study …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2000-02-10, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1991-2000

On the front page of this edition of the Wooster Voice, there is an article discussing the vandalism of Kauke Arch. In typical Wooster tradition, students attempted to fill the arch with snow in the hopes of having classes cancelled for their efforts. However, some students took it too far and caused $12,000 worth of damage. In the heat of the moment, a group of students decided to leave some "surprises" for the plows, which included ripped up benches from around campus. In the pages that follow, there is an article about the Bissman Wrestling Federation's making it's debut in …

Financial Liberalization, International Monetary Dis/Order, And The Neoliberal State, Timothy A. Canova Jan 2000

Financial Liberalization, International Monetary Dis/Order, And The Neoliberal State, Timothy A. Canova

Faculty Scholarship

This article started as a plenary paper that was presented to the annual International Economic Law conference of the American Society of International Law. The conference itself posed the question of whether the new international economic order was leading to greater peace, stability, fairness and justice. At a time when American post-Cold War triumphalism was perhaps at its zenith, Canova answered with an unequivocal indictment of the global order for failing to deliver peace or justice. The first part of the article critiques the international monetary system, and argues that the primary negative consequence of capital liberalization is the undermining …

Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale De France, Codex Grec 54: Modus Operandi Of Scribes And Artists In A Palaiologan Gospel Book, Kathleen Maxwell Jan 2000

Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale De France, Codex Grec 54: Modus Operandi Of Scribes And Artists In A Palaiologan Gospel Book, Kathleen Maxwell

Art and Art History

Much can be learned about the working methods of scribes and artists when they leave their product unfinished. This is true of the late thirteenth-century illustrated Gospel book, Paris, Bibliothe`que Nationale de France, cod. gr. 54. It was intended to be a deluxe, bilingual (Greek and Latin) manuscript featuring full-page evangelist portraits and an extensive narrative cycle of some fifty-two miniatures. In the end, only about half of its Latin text and twenty-two narrative miniatures were actually completed. Five other miniatures remain unfinished, and space was reserved in the text for twenty-five additional miniatures that were never even begun. No …
