The Role Of E-Mail On Information Overload In Organizational Managers, Bruce K. Bell Feb 2000

The Role Of E-Mail On Information Overload In Organizational Managers, Bruce K. Bell

Faculty Dissertations

This descriptive case study explored the role of e-mail on information overload in organizational managers. Conducting research at two international organizations in Central Virginia, the researcher surveyed 73 managers, conducted in-depth interviews with 12 managers, and completed an organizational records review of e-mail messages sent and received. The quantitative data were analyzed using the Pearson cl1rrelation coefficient to discover relationships between each of three subscales: the presence and perceived value of e-mail, resistance to information technology, and the experience of information overload. An independent t-test examined the responses of men and women. Those data revealed no statistically significant relationships between …

Silencing John Doe: Defamation & Discourse In Cyberspace, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky Feb 2000

Silencing John Doe: Defamation & Discourse In Cyberspace, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky

Duke Law Journal

John Doe has become a popular defamation defendant as corporations and their officers bring defamation suits for statements made about them in Internet discussion fora. These new suits are not even arguably about recovering money damages but instead are brought for symbolic reasons-some worthy, some not so worthy. If the only consequence of these suits were that Internet users were held accountable for their speech, the suits would be an unalloyed good. However, these suits threaten to suppress legitimate criticism along with intentional and reckless falsehoods, and existing First Amendment law doctrines are not responsive to the threat these suits …

A Study Of Signature Analysis Regarding A Rzeppa Type Constant Velocity Joint, Charles Ii Dunn Feb 2000

A Study Of Signature Analysis Regarding A Rzeppa Type Constant Velocity Joint, Charles Ii Dunn

Theses

The objective for the CV Joint Test Stand Thesis is to design and develop a test stand that will allow the ability to test a constant velocity (CV) joint with a computer interface for data collection. This thesis concentrates on two separate sections, one is the specification of equipment and computer program for data collection, and the second is a moderate outlook on signature analysis of the system. The APRA (Automotive Parts Rebuilders Association) along with the National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery (NCRRR) are dedicated to the quality and the need for better remanufacturing techniques. The specification of …

Intracranial Tuberculoma, Tayseer M. Zein, Peter S. Fletcher, Zein M. Mirghani Feb 2000

Intracranial Tuberculoma, Tayseer M. Zein, Peter S. Fletcher, Zein M. Mirghani

Saudi Medical Journal

Six patients with cerebral tuberculoma seen over a 2 year period are reported. Their clinical presentations, the result of investigations including radiological findings and their response to medical treatment are discussed and correlated with other reports in the literature. Eighty five percent of the patients were above the age of 30 years. All patients had negative past history of tuberculosis and both chest x-ray and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were within normal limits. Five patients presented with symptoms and signs of space occupying lesions but none had papilloedema. Two patients showed paradoxical enlargement or development of new tuberculous lesions during antituberculous …

A Historical Essay On The Development Of Flexography, Ana Gomez

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to describe the development of flexography in a historical essay, which will be a contribution to the history of printing technology. The starting point will be 1890, the year when the first patent for a rotary press using rubber plates was obtained, and the study will continue to the present day, including the latest developments. Pesticide Use And Grower Perceptions Of Pest Problems On Ornamental Crops In Hawaii, Robert G. Holingsworth, Arnold H. Hara, Kelvin T. Sewake Feb 2000

Pesticide Use And Grower Perceptions Of Pest Problems On Ornamental Crops In Hawaii, Robert G. Holingsworth, Arnold H. Hara, Kelvin T. Sewake

Journal of Extension

Ninety-five out of 400 growers (23.8%) of ornamental crops in Hawaii responded to a survey about pest problems and pesticide use. Sixty-eight percent of respondents listed either cut orchids or anthuriums as their main crop. Pests considered serious on these crops included thrips, mites and slugs/snails. Pesticide use (excluding fungicides) was heavy on cut orchids and anthuriums, averaged 35.8 and 27.7 pesticide applications per grower per year, respectively. Growers who scouted for pests made far fewer pesticide applications than those who did not. Growers obtained most of their pest control information from government sources, chiefly the Cooperative Extension Service.

Decreased Thin Filament Density And Length In Human Atrophic Soleus Muscle Fibers After Spaceflight, Danny A. Riley, James L. W. Bain, Joyce L. Thompson, Robert H. Fitts, Jeffrey J. Widrick, Scott W. Trappe, Todd A. Trappe, David L. Costill

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Soleus muscle fibers were examined electron microscopically from pre- and postflight biopsies of four astronauts orbited for 17 days during the Life and Microgravity Sciences Spacelab Mission (June 1996). Myofilament density and spacing were normalized to a 2.4-μm sarcomere length. Thick filament density (~1,062 filaments/μm2) and spacing (~32.5 nm) were unchanged by spaceflight. Preflight thin filament density (2,976/μm2) decreased significantly (P < 0.01) to 2,215/μm2 in the overlap A band region as a result of a 17% filament loss and a 9% increase in short filaments. Normal fibers had 13% short thin filaments. The 26% decrease in thin filaments …
