A Cross-Cultural Content Analysis Of Television News: Weslaco And Abilene, Texas And Matamoros, Mexico, Biada Pena

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study is a cross-cultural research project involving two small Texas television markets and a third in Matamoros, Mexico. The study compares, through a research content analysis of video-taped TV newscasts, differences and similarities between three markets.

These three markets were selected because of their geographical and cultural characteristics to determine whether geographic proximity or cultural proximity is an indication of similarities.

The study concluded that the Matamoros TV newscasts concentrated more heavily on politics and the economy rather than on crime. The Weslaco newscasts aired the highest numbers of crime related stories while the newscasts in Abilene focused more …

Refining American Strategy In Africa, Steven Metz Dr. Feb 2000

Refining American Strategy In Africa, Steven Metz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author provides a broad overview of the African security environment as a basis for recommendations on the refinement of American strategy in that region. He assesses both the opportunities for positive change which exist today, and the obstacles. While only Africans themselves can determine the future of their region, an American strategy which discourages proxy aggression, encourages private initiatives in the economic and political spheres, and uses the U.S. military, particularly the Army, to engage its African counterparts could pay great dividends. American defense strategy calls for using the military to help shape the global security environment, preempting and …

Childhood Enuresis. Epidemiology, Pathophysiology And Management., Yaser S. Al-Ghamdy, Naseem A. Qureshi, Muzamil H. Abdelgadir

Saudi Medical Journal

The goal of this article is to review childhood enuresis, which is a common behavioral condition reported in millions of children worldwide. An online computer search was made, and the literature up to 1997 was screened in order to include relevant data for this review. The prevalence of childhood enuresis varies across reviewed studies. This was attributed to a variety of sociodemographic and cultural dynamics of societies. Similarly, the pathophysiology of this ubiquitous symptom is determined by multiple risk factors including biological, psychological, social, and cultural, but the developmental/maturational delay influenced by genetics remains the most plausible explanation. Although a …

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

Resistance to antimicrobial agents used to treat severe Campylobacter spp. gastroenteritis is increasing worldwide. We assessed the antimicrobial resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. isolates of human and animal origin. More than half (n = 32) were resistant to sulphonamide, a feature known to be associated with the presence of integrons. Analysis of these integrons will further our understanding of Campylobacter spp. epidemiology.

Stocking Rate Guidelines For Rural Small Holdings, Swan Coastal Plain And Darling Scarp And Surrounds, Western Australia, Dennis Van Gool, Ken Angell, Lindsay Stephens

Agriculture reports

Small rural holdings are often owned by people who want to pursue a semi-rural lifestyle but who are inexperienced in land management issues. This can result in landholders stocking their properties with animals at rates higher than the land resources can sustain, leading to degradation problems such as soil erosion, water pollution and damage to vegetation. This document provides information and guidelines to help planners, developers, local authorities and land owners determine the base stocking rates for rural small holdings on the Swan Coastal Plain and Darling Scarp and immediate surrounds. The advice utilises Agriculture Western Australia’s rural stocking rate …

Corporate Risk Analysis: A Reckless Act?, W. Kip Viscusi Feb 2000

Corporate Risk Analysis: A Reckless Act?, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Balancing of risk and cost lies at the heart of standard negligence tests and policy analysis approaches to government regulation. Notwithstanding the desirability of using a benefit-cost approach to assess the merits of safety measures, in many court cases juries appear to penalize corporations for having done a risk analysis in instances in which the company decided not to make a safety improvement after the analysis indicated the improvement was unwarranted Automobile accident cases provide the most prominent examples of such juror sanctions. This paper tests the effect of corporate risk analyses experimentally by using a sample of almost 500 …

Levels Of Synthetic Musks In Municipal Wastewater For Estimating Biota Exposure In Receiving Waters, Lantis Osemwengie Feb 2000

Levels Of Synthetic Musks In Municipal Wastewater For Estimating Biota Exposure In Receiving Waters, Lantis Osemwengie

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Natural musk (muscone) is a highly prized natural product for use in expensive consumer fragrances. Inexpensive synthetic substitutes have been commercialized over the last 40 years. Two main chemical classes are used commercially — the nitro musks (which fulfilled the original demand for inexpensive fragrance additives for personal care products such as bath soap, body lotions, perfumes, and washing detergents) and the newer polycyclic musks which have musklike smell. The commercial nitro musks include musk ketone, musk moskene, musk ambrette, musk xylene, and musk tibetene. The polycyclics include trade named compounds such as Galaxolide®, Tonalide®, Celestolide®, Traseolide®, Phantolide®, and Cashmeran®, …

On The Assessment Of Stability And Patterning Of Speech Movements, Anne Smith, Michael T. Johnson, Clare Mcgillem, Lisa Goffman Feb 2000

On The Assessment Of Stability And Patterning Of Speech Movements, Anne Smith, Michael T. Johnson, Clare Mcgillem, Lisa Goffman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Speech requires the control of complex movements of orofacial structures to produce dynamic variations in the vocal tract transfer function. The nature of the underlying motor control processes has traditionally been investigated by employing measures of articulatory movements, including movement amplitude, velocity, and duration, at selected points in time. An alternative approach, first used in the study of limb motion, is to examine the entire movement trajectory over time. A new approach to speech movement trajectory analysis was introduced in earlier work from this laboratory. In this method, trajectories from multiple movement sequences are time- and amplitude-normalized, and the STI …

Correlates Of Physical Activity In Male And Female Youth, Timothy Bungum, Marsha Dowda, Anne T. Weston, Stewart G. Trost, Russell R. Pate Feb 2000

Correlates Of Physical Activity In Male And Female Youth, Timothy Bungum, Marsha Dowda, Anne T. Weston, Stewart G. Trost, Russell R. Pate

Faculty Publications

This study examined associations between psychosocial factors and physical activity in a group of youth (n=520). Students completed the Previous Day Physical Activity Recall and a survey of potential determinants of physical activity. Regression analyses of intentions to be physically active revealed that enjoyment and self-efficacy predicted intentions for both males and females. Attitudes predicted moderate to vigorous activity (MVPA), and enjoyment and self-efficacy predicted vigorous activity (VPA) for males. Self-efficacy predicted both MVPA and VPA for females. The findings suggest that intervention programs targeted at youth should include developmentally appropriate activities that are fun and promote physical …

Soldiers For Justice: The Role Of The Tuskegee Airmen In The Desegregation Of The American Armed Forces, F. Michael Higginbotham

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Often noted for their heroic prowess as pilots in World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen served just as nobly fighting racial segregation within the Army. Considered exemplary in its integration today, the armed forces were a testing ground for integration in the middle of the twentieth century. Black officers and enlisted men, putting themselves in harm's way for a segregated United States, rebuked the notion of separate but equal, thereby slowly paving the way for integration in the military, and eventually, the nation. In this Article, F. Michael Higgenbotham examines the history of segregation in the United States Armed Forces …

Clarifying The Effects Of Parental Substance Abuse, Child Sexual Abuse, And Parental Caregiving On Adult Adjustment, Timothy Melchert Feb 2000

Clarifying The Effects Of Parental Substance Abuse, Child Sexual Abuse, And Parental Caregiving On Adult Adjustment, Timothy Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Parental alcoholism, childhood sexual abuse, and other forms of child maltreatment are generally viewed as contributing to adult adjustment problems. The long-term effects of these various factors, however, are actually not well understood. The present study found that the largest amount of variance in 255 college students' psychological distress was explained by parental emotional abuse and neglect, with child sexual abuse, parental substance abuse, and other factors explaining additional but smaller amounts of variance in distress. This suggests that comprehensive conceptualizations of family influences on development will result in a more complete understanding of long-term adjustment outcomes than merely focusing …
