Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The search for appropriate vaccine candidates and drug targets against onchocerciasis has so far been confronted with several limitations due to the unavailability of biological material, appropriate molecular resources, and knowledge of the parasite biology. To identify targets for vaccine or chemotherapy development we have undertaken two approaches. First, cDNA expression libraries were constructed from life cycle stages that are critical for establishment of Onchocerca volvulus infection, the third-stage larvae (L3) and the molting L3. A gene discovery effort was then initiated by random expressed sequence tag analysis of 5,506 cDNA clones. Cluster analyses showed that many of the transcripts …

Hardiness & Spiritual Well-Being As Moderators Of Burnout In Professional Nurses, Kathleen Marie Eichner Sims Mar 2000

Hardiness & Spiritual Well-Being As Moderators Of Burnout In Professional Nurses, Kathleen Marie Eichner Sims

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of hardiness and spiritual well-being as moderators of burnout in a random sample of professional nurses in Oregon. The first hypothesis stated that higher levels of hardiness and spiritual well-being would be related to lower levels of burnout. A second hypothesis stated that existential well-being would be positively correlated with hardiness. The third hypothesis stated that age, years of experience, spiritual well-being and hardiness would be related to lower burnout. Hardiness and its components of commitment, challenge and control were measured by the Personal Views Survey II. Spiritual well-being, existential …

Site Visit To Richmond And Hampton Roads — Bon Secours Health System, Inc., Nora Super Mar 2000

Site Visit To Richmond And Hampton Roads — Bon Secours Health System, Inc., Nora Super

National Health Policy Forum

The first in a series of three site visits leading to an April 27–28, 2000, conference in Annapolis, Maryland, on hospital-based health care systems in transition after the enactment of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 (BBA) and the Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP Balanced Budget Refinement Act of 1999 (BBRA). The site visit was designed to better understand how changing payment incentives — particularly the move to prospective payment systems for postacute services — has affected the ability to implement a continuum of care across delivery sites. It examined the Bon Secours Health System's operations in Virginia, which include four hospitals …

Novel Function Of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase In T Cell Ca2+ Signaling, Ao-Lin Hsu, Tsui-Ting Ching, Goutam Sen, Da-Sheng Wan, Subbarao Bondada, Kalwant S. Authi, Ching-Shih Chen

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

This study presents evidence that phosphoinositide (PI) 3-kinase is involved in T cell Ca2+ signaling via a phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate PI(3,4,5)P3-sensitive Ca2+entry pathway. First, exogenous PI(3,4,5)P3 at concentrations close to its physiological levels induces Ca2+ influx in T cells, whereas PI(3,4)P2, PI(4,5)P2, and PI(3)P have no effect on [Ca2+]i. This Ca2+ entry mechanism is cell type-specific as B cells and a number of cell lines examined do not respond to PI(3,4,5)P3 stimulation. Second, inhibition of PI 3-kinase by wortmannin and by overexpression of the …
