African-American Women's Perceptions Of Prenatal Care, Catherine A. Knop Apr 2000

African-American Women's Perceptions Of Prenatal Care, Catherine A. Knop

Masters Theses

A wide disparity between black and white infant mortality rates in Kalamazoo County has prompted investigations by the community. With class-related factors like education and insurance ownership not sufficiently explaining the disparity, this thesis explores, instead, prenatal care as another facet in the problem. Some literature shows a correlation between satisfaction with care and its utilization that is linked to positive pregnancy outcomes (Handler et al. 1998; Lantos 1994; Lazarus 1994). This thesis analyzes middle and lower class African-American women's opinions of prenatal care in Kalamazoo County. During one-on-one interviews, 14 women answered open-ended questions about prenatal care, access to …

Choice Of Small Business Tax Entity, John W. Lee Apr 2000

Choice Of Small Business Tax Entity, John W. Lee

Faculty Publications

This article summarizes parts of Lee’s forthcoming article “A Populist Political Perspective of the Business Tax Entities Universe: Hey the Stars Might Lie But the Numbers Never Do,” 78 Texas L. Rev. 885 (2000). Conventional wisdom, says Lee, holds that the LLC, due to its limited liability and hassle-free single level of taxation, will supplant C and S corporations as the choice of entity for new businesses. In fact, in most jurisdictions corporate formations outnumber LLC formations 2:1 or more, and IRS Statistics of Income (SOI) projects that the S corporation will be the fastest growing tax entity for 2000 …

A Partnership For Health And Safety Of Farm And Ranch Families, Linda S. Boeckner, Gloria Gross, Sue Chaulk, Patricia Ramsey Apr 2000

A Partnership For Health And Safety Of Farm And Ranch Families, Linda S. Boeckner, Gloria Gross, Sue Chaulk, Patricia Ramsey

Journal of Extension

The development, activities, and outcomes of a rural community health partnership are described. The partnership was formed in a sparsely populated rural area that was federally designated as a primary care health professional shortage area (HPSA) and medically underserved area (MUA). High morbidity and mortality figures for farmers and ranchers indicated a need to address prevention steps. Several health service providers and educational institutions worked together to provide farm-ranch health and safety events that included health screening, educational seminars, and opportunities for immunizations. Through the years, participation by farm and ranch families in the health screening and educational activities has …

Process And Reality: Working With A Local Watershed Organization To Develop A Restoration Effectiveness Monitoring Program, Richard R. Harris, Michael De Lasaux, Susan Kocher Apr 2000

Process And Reality: Working With A Local Watershed Organization To Develop A Restoration Effectiveness Monitoring Program, Richard R. Harris, Michael De Lasaux, Susan Kocher

Journal of Extension

A structured decision-making process was used to help a local stakeholder group select a watershed for restoration effectiveness monitoring. The process did not go as planned but nevertheless yielded important results. These included an increased appreciation of divergent goals within the group, an understanding of the effects of scale on monitoring, and a proposal (now funded) for watershed trend monitoring. Professional judgment of stakeholders proved more important than quantitative analysis as a basis for watershed selection. As a result of this experience, a modified process for conducting similar work is proposed.

Oregon Extension Volunteers: Partners In Action, Marjorie J. Braker, Janice R. Leno, Clara C. Pratt, Deana Grobe Apr 2000

Oregon Extension Volunteers: Partners In Action, Marjorie J. Braker, Janice R. Leno, Clara C. Pratt, Deana Grobe

Journal of Extension

The survey assessed 969 Oregon Extension volunteers about their perception of benefits and costs of Extension volunteer work. Volunteers from all program areas and regions of the state were included. Volunteers reported personal benefits, including gains in knowledge, self-confidence, and interpersonal relationships. Community benefits were noted by more than one third of volunteers. Fewer volunteers noted economic benefits, but for those who did, these benefits were significant and included increased job skills and useful contacts. The costs of volunteering were perceived as low and centered on time demands. Implications of these findings for Extension programming and faculty roles are discussed.

An Evaluation Of An Interdisciplinary Team Approach To Delivery Of Childcare Provider Training, Rick Peterson, Janet Prillaman

Journal of Extension

An evaluation of an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of childcare provider training revealed that the team was successful in increasing participant knowledge in four key content areas of childcare. Participants increased their overall childcare knowledge by 29% from pre- to post-test. Paired t-test results on 16 separate tests representing 586 cases indicated that a statistically significant change at the .05 level occurred on all 16 content areas as a result of the educational intervention. The team approach, with its developed materials including pre- and post-test measures, can serve as a model for other collaborative efforts by Extension educators.

Maintaining The Relevance Of An Extension Data Center, Jose Reynaldo A. Santos, Diann M. Mitchell Apr 2000

Maintaining The Relevance Of An Extension Data Center, Jose Reynaldo A. Santos, Diann M. Mitchell

Journal of Extension

The proliferation of desktop computers and powerful analytical software has not eliminated the need for an extension data center (EDC). Instead, it is the evolution of those technologies that have served as a driving force for EDC to justify its existence by taking on diversified, new, proactive roles in supporting customers on several fronts. From pure data processing and statistical analysis, EDC's role has expanded to encompass software and Web technology training, graphics and text scanning, diskette duplication, network monitoring, and Web-content management. This article discusses how a small data center managed not only to avoid obsolescence but also to …

The Multi-Cultural Center Of Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Providing Opportunities For All People To Learn, Celebrate, And Share Through Cultural Experiences, Dedra R. Tennis, John Burton, Barbara Forinash

Journal of Extension

Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has experienced a major population growth of immigrant and refugee families. New arrivals must meet the everyday challenges of daily survival in a culture for which they are not prepared. A task force was established in 1995, and out of this grew the concept of a Multi-Cultural Center. As part of the National Children, Youth and Families At Risk (CYFAR) Initiative, which was funded by USDA CSREES, the South Dakota State University Cooperative Extension Service (SDSU CES) partnered with the Multi-Cultural Center to address various cultural hurdles. This partnership has led to the successful implementation of …

A Systems-Based Methodology For The Construction And Representation Of Organizational Knowledge Systems, Willie James Mcfadden

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop and apply a systems-based, analysis methodology which constructs and represents an organization's knowledge system. The research inquiry was guided by four questions: (1) “what is an organizational knowledge system?” (2) “how can it be made explicit?” (3) “does the representation accurately depict the organization's perspective of their unique knowledge system?” and (4) “what results from the deployment of the organizational knowledge system methodology?” The resultant answers to these research questions advanced and established the theoretical conception of an organization's knowledge system through the development of a methodology that fosters the construction and …

Coverage Denials In Erisa Plans: Assessing The Federal Legislative Solution, Karen A. Jordan Apr 2000

Coverage Denials In Erisa Plans: Assessing The Federal Legislative Solution, Karen A. Jordan

Missouri Law Review

Whether patients who obtain their health coverage through private employment ought to be able to sue managed care plans for injuries resulting from coverage denials has been a significant health policy issue for years. The debate became more intense as recent judgments against major managed care plans highlighted the inequity caused by the preemption provisions in federal employment law

Erisa's Quantity Vs. Quality Doctrine: The Eighth Circuit Limits Recovery Against An Hmo By Completely Preempting State Law, Jeremy P. Brummond

Missouri Law Review

Health Maintenance Organizations ("HMOs") were developed to facilitate the provision of effective care at low prices to plan members. To attain this purpose, HMOs have been required to act as both providers who administer care and gatekeepers who can deny access to care.3 The Employee Retirement Income Security Act ("ERISA"), praised as "the greatest development in the life of the American Worker since Social Security,"4 regulates plans administered by IMOs. Congress has stated explicitly that ERISA was enacted to promote the interests of employees and their beneficiaries in employee benefit plans.5 In drafting ERISA, Congress sought to protect plan beneficiaries …

A Model Of Antecedents Of Work-Family Conflict For Dual-Earner Couples In The Sandwiched Generation: A Longitudinal Study, Yueng-Hsiang Emily Huang Apr 2000

A Model Of Antecedents Of Work-Family Conflict For Dual-Earner Couples In The Sandwiched Generation: A Longitudinal Study, Yueng-Hsiang Emily Huang

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation integrates theory and research in the examination of the antecedents of work-family conflict for dual-earner couples in the sandwiched generation. In a continuation of Frone, Yardly and Markel's (1997) study, this dissertation uses longitudinal data to test the mediating effects of job and family satisfaction variables on the relationship between the antecedent variables and work-family conflict, and between work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict. Because Frone et al.'s 1997 model was examined using cross-sectional data, this dissertation provides a more stringent test of the model of the work-family interface. Two waves of mailed surveys were collected from 234 couples …

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Access To Health Insurance And Health Care, Ucla Center For Health Policy Research, The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation

Native Health Database Full Text

Racial and ethnic groups in the United States continue to experience major differences in health status compared to the majority white population. Although many factors affect health status, the lack of health insurance and other barriers to obtaining health services markedly diminish minorities' use of both preventive services and medical treatments. This report, produced in collaboration with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, examines health insurance coverage and access to physician services among African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and American Indians and Alaska Natives. By pooling national survey data over two years, information about particular minority …

Cytokines And The Anorexia Of Infection: Potential Mechanisms And Treatments, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Anorexia during infection is thought to be mediated by immunoregulatory cytokines such as interleukins 1 and 6 and tumor necrosis factor. This article reviews the potential mechanisms of action by which these cytokines are thought to suppress food intake during infection and examines the proposition that blocking of cytokine activity might be one approach to improving food intake of the infected host.

Dying Well: A Christian Perspective, William Morris Mar 2000

Dying Well: A Christian Perspective, William Morris

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This project assists pastors in preparing parishioners to confront the realities of suffering and dying with a God-given identity in a world that seeks to cure pain and suffering by killing. A survey of the pastors and laity of the Michigan District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod was conducted to identify their understanding of dying well and to ascertain whether or not they have been influenced by our postmodern society. On a whole the pastors and laity viewed dying in Christ as dying well. A Bible study was developed to assist pastors in preparing parishioners to die well.
