Restoring O’Brien Creek, Missoula, Mt, David Hamilton Glaser, Vicki J. Watson Apr 2000

Restoring O’Brien Creek, Missoula, Mt, David Hamilton Glaser, Vicki J. Watson

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

O’Brien Creek, near Missoula, Montana, has been altered by tree harvest, road building, grazing and dewatering. These actions led to loss of streamside vegetation, increased streambank erosion and scouring, and decreased native fish and wildlife recruitment. The Forest Service recently closed and recontoured roads in the upper watershed while the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks regraded and revegetated the lower creek to return it to a more natural state. I monitored the efficacy of revegetation of the newly restructured streambanks within the first year and a half of planting. The survival rate of plantings after the first year …

Plant Materials Centers Provide Vegetative Solutions, Larry Holzworth, Dwight Tober, Dan Ogle

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Current land management practices are highly complex involving holistic approaches to achieve land health and environmental quality. Plants can be used to address today’s environmental problems. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides conservation planning, program administration, and technology transfer to private landowners. Plant Material Centers (PMCs), together with a multitude of partners, develop plant materials and provide technology regarding their use. To date, there are 484 cultivars and natural germplasms of improved plants that have been released by PMCs. A large number of these releases have been successfully incorporated into the commercial seed and plant production industry. Over 114 …

Time Critical Removal Action In Response To Contaminated Soils Along The Eastside Ditch Near Deer Lodge, Montana, G. S. Vandeberg, D. J. Dollhopf, Dennis Neuman, P. D. Smith, W. Bluck, S. Brown Apr 2000

Time Critical Removal Action In Response To Contaminated Soils Along The Eastside Ditch Near Deer Lodge, Montana, G. S. Vandeberg, D. J. Dollhopf, Dennis Neuman, P. D. Smith, W. Bluck, S. Brown

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Some irrigated lands along the Clark Fork River, near Deer Lodge, Montana contain elevated levels of arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead and zinc, and low soil pH. This contamination originated from river-transported mine wastes associated with metal mining, milling and smelting operations in the Butte and Anaconda, Montana areas. In May 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ordered the responsible party (ARCO) to reduce contamination on historically irrigated lands along the Eastside Ditch near Deer Lodge, Montana. These lands consist of residential properties and adjacent pastures. The preferred action for the residential yards is excavation and replacement of soils (up to …

Bioassessment Of A Reclaimed Placer Mined Stream: Recovery Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities, Wease Bollman Apr 2000

Bioassessment Of A Reclaimed Placer Mined Stream: Recovery Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities, Wease Bollman

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The upper reaches of Elk Creek, Granite County, Montana, have been placer mined for more than 100 years. Recent efforts at restoring trout habitat in these reaches included reconstruction of portions of the stream channel, resulting in improved morphology, the return of surface flows in some areas, and introduction of riparian vegetation to denuded streambanks. Prior to reconstruction, In this study, biotic health of these reaches of Elk Creek was evaluated. A comparison of benthic macroinvertebrate communities and bioassessment metrics between reconstructed and control sites was made over three years, using a battery of bioassessment metrics shown to be reliable …

Remediation Alternatives For Milltown Reservoir, Marge Hulburt, Geoff Smith, Christine Brick Apr 2000

Remediation Alternatives For Milltown Reservoir, Marge Hulburt, Geoff Smith, Christine Brick

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Milltown Reservoir is located at the confluence of the Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers, approximately seven miles upstream of the city of Missoula. It was created by the construction of Milltown Dam in 1907 and has collected contaminated sediments over the years from mining, milling, and smelting activities upstream in Butte and Anaconda.

Approximately 6.6 million cubic yards of sediment has accumulated in the reservoir, containing thousands of tons of arsenic, copper, zinc, iron, and manganese. Periodic scouring events mobilize metal-contaminated sediments, causing water quality standards to be exceeded in the Clark Fork River below the dam. A plume of …

Overview Of The Flathead Lake Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Strategy (Vnrs), Scott Marshall Payne, Mark Holston Apr 2000

Overview Of The Flathead Lake Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Strategy (Vnrs), Scott Marshall Payne, Mark Holston

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

If you ask Montanans which five Montana lakes are the most important or valuable, invariably Flathead Lake is in the top three picks. The lake's size, beauty, recreation benefits, and excellent water quality increase local real estate values and make it a popular destination. However, few Montanans know that Flathead Lake currently does not meet State water quality standards (ARM 17.30.637 (1)(e)General Prohibitions), and is undergoing the eutrophication process at an accelerated rate. Excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) stimulate algal blooms and serious oxygen depletion of the deep waters. Extensive lake and stream water quality monitoring document that nonpoint source …

Clark Fork Non-Point Source Nutrient Sampling Report For Summers Of 1999 And 2000, John D. Lhotak, Vicki J. Watson

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Program (VNRP) for the Clark Fork River has set a target of reducing non-point source nutrient inputs by 20%. In-stream target levels are 20 ppb for total phosphorus and 300 ppb for total nitrogen. In order to assess whether this was being worked towards and to identify areas of concern, long-term monitoring was of nutrient input to the Clark Fork River and tributaries of concern was proposed in the spring of 1998. Monitoring began in the fall of 1998, and has continued to the present. In 2000, some sites on the Bitterroot River were added.

Exotic And Native Species Management, Montana Fish, Wildlife And Parks Apr 2000

Exotic And Native Species Management, Montana Fish, Wildlife And Parks

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Upper Clark Fork (above Milltown Reservoir)

The mainstem fishery is well below its potential. It's overriding problem is the multiple impacts of mining-everything from instream contamination to streambanks destabilized by their inability to support adequate riparian vegetation. The impacts of metals pollution are exacerbated by dewatering, streambank grazing, channelization and excess nutrient loading. While some of the tributaries support good populations of westslope cutthroat and bull trout, the mainstem population is almost entirely metal-tolerant brown trout.

Evaluating Stream Bioassessment Protocols Using Data From The Clark Fork’S Ecoregion, Wease Bollman Apr 2000

Evaluating Stream Bioassessment Protocols Using Data From The Clark Fork’S Ecoregion, Wease Bollman

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

A proposed method for the evaluation of macroinvertebrate bioassessment protocols is described in this study. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (Montana DEQ) uses a modification of US EPA’s Rapid Bioassessment Protocols for stream assessment and monitoring. These protocols use a battery of macroinvertebrate community descriptors, or metrics, as indicators of biotic health; the metrics are based upon tenets of ecological theory and field observations and remained largely untested for sensitivity to the effects of human activities.

To evaluate the metric battery in current use, 93 stream sites were sampled in the Montana Valley and Foothill Prairies ecoregion (which includes …

Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin Apr 2000

Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin

Honors Theses

The current AIDS epidemic has changed the way we view the world as well as our society as a whole. Diseases have ravaged humanity since the dawn of time, so what makes AIDS so much different from every other disease encountered by man? One reason is its transmission method. We know that HIV passes from person to person via blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. Most people that suffer from this disease contract it during sex, during intravenous drug use, or during a blood transfusion. Early accounts of HIV disease occurred in minority groups, namely homosexual men. This may have bee …
